Jonathan Demme shows extreme close-ups of faces through most of The Silence of the Lambs. This accentuates the scrutiny and inappropriate advances that Clarice Starling has to deal with throughout the entire movie. The movie plays on pretty much every fear that people have, and this technique also seems to play upon our unease when people intrude on our comfort zone. It's really quite brilliant.

Criterion should re-release The Silence of the Lambs with an honest-to-goodness awesome transfer.

I've developed a pretty good sense of whether I'm going to like something enough to want to own a copy. I've very rarely blind-bought a movie, and after watching it said "Well, that was a piece of crap". If I'm not sure about a movie, I tend to pass on it, though there have been exceptions for one reason or another, and I find that I should've listened to my instinct to pass on it.

Finished with the Three Colors Trilogy which was a pricey blind buy for me. Ended up really enjoying it. I think I probably lean towards Blue as my favorite for just the emotional impact. Opening scene really hit hard and had my favorite soundtrack of the three. White was most humorous of the bunch but the one that probably needs the most rewatch from me. Red was great too though and I found it weird to be happy
[Show spoiler]to see the main characters off all three movies survive the Ferry disaster but after thinking about how so many others had died. Not the most happy ending.

The current transfer isn't terrible, but considering the quality of the film...it deserves better.

Just saw Being John Malkovich for the Xth time; there is no doubt it is one of my very favorite Criterion titles. One of the few comedies that plays just as great on repeat viewings. Did anybody else see it for the first time on the IFC Channel? That's how I first saw it in high school and my God! what an eye opener!

I cannot wait to see Her.

I watched The Devil's Backbone for the first time last night and though it is a well-made film, I personally did not love the film. I try so hard to like Guillermo del Toro's films but there is just something about his movies that give me nausea in my mind... his films are uncomfortable and disturbing and to me, nightmarish. To many, his films are brilliant, and I can understand this. But I cannot force myself to like the movie I watched last night, even though its only a single viewing. There is so much to detest about the villain in this film that I find no gratification or redemption at all here. It's just a bit too dark for me, and there is just a bit too much blood, gore and murder here.

Am I the only person who didn't like this movie too?

JW, Devil's Backbone is near the bottom of Del Toro offerings for me. That still means its good, but nevertheless falls short of the glory of Hellboy II, Pans Labyrinth, Cronos, etc. I plan on giving it another look soon, so I hope to eventually see what Mark Lermode sees in the film.

AB,

Del Toro claimed in the supplements that it is his favorite film that he ever made. Obviously it is not my favorite or yours too.

I'm trying to get this disturbing movie out of my mind so I'm going to go ahead and watch Robert Bresson's A Man Escaped now.

I need a much needed escape from that nightmare I saw last night.

Whewwww!

I don't have the blu of Silence of the Lambs but I do have the Criterion dvd and I must say for one of their first dvd releases the PQ and AQ are pretty top notch.

I was surprised when I put the dvd in for the first time since I got my new HT sound system - the dvd sound really packed a punch. Not spectacular by any means but very, very good.

Yeah, I haven't managed to migrate my wife's collection into mine yet... but then again we've only been maried for 4 months. And she has Twilight movies... hahahaha.

Nice cabinets... those look amazing, as does the collection. And I have to move some of my shelves up and down to fit the larger Criterion packaging.

I remember thinking that The Devil's Backbone was my favorite Guillermo Del Toro film when I saw it on DVD several years ago, but I never did revisit it on a frequent basis and ended up selling the DVD. I loved Pan's Labyrinth as well, but that movie also grew stale over time for some reason.

I never did take to Hellboy. It was fun enough when I saw it in the theater, but nothing about the movie reverberated with me. I never got around to seeing Hellboy 2.

Pacific Rim was pretty awesome, but I wish that the movie had included scenes of the Jaegers fighting the kaiju in broad daylight with no rain. I'm weary of CGI-heavy scenes at nighttime in the rain. This is the big reason why Oblivion shreds Pacific Rim when it comes to visual splendor.

On an entirely different note...

Robert Bresson's A Man Escaped is a masterpiece across the board, pure and simple. This movie is so much more intense than any of the above-mentioned films, although the only special effects are a prison cell, walls, and a boarded door. I bought this and watched it on the week of release, but I've had a hankering to revisit it and will do so soon.

So kind of on topic here... in so much as it's an actor in a few of my Criterion BDs and DVDs. It's a pic me and Bill Murray at a baseball game last night. He sat in front of me and was gracious enough to take pictures and sign some autographs (wish I had my CC BDs with me). I'll put it behind a spoiler tag so it doesn't take up lots of space, and as to not anger those that don't care.

Thanks for sharing! This is a seriously awesome photo.

Me too. I think I'm going to have a Bill Murray marathon this weekend, introduce my wife to some of his less know films (Life Aquatic, Broken Flowers, Rushmore, Coffee and Cigarettes...) Coffee and Cigarettes, now that's a movie that needs a CC release! Love that film.

Yeah, he's part owner, along with Mike Veeck. Remember Disco Demolition Night? That was Mike. My wife is from Chicago as well and has had Mike a professor in some of her classes. He's a great guy too! They talk everytime we see him at the game.

Hellboy 2 is MUCH better than its predecessor. I saw it first and enjoyed it. Then I saw the first one and despite all my desire to like it and justify getting the Special Edition blu-ray, I just could not imagine watching that movie again. HB2 has a lot more Del Toro trademark fantasy element and visual design. It's also quite funny in moments and, hell, even uses a Barry Manilow song to great effect. Do please check it out.
