lordmorpheus72: That is awesome you got to meet Bill Murray and sit right behind him. I had no idea he was part-owner of the Charleston Riverdogs too, much less a baseball fan. My friend and colleague who founded a nonprofit organization (he is a former minor league pitcher) worked with the Riverdogs in 2006 by holding a promotional players autograph session in support of his nonprofit. Check out the photos here if you want: http://bairfind.org/news/2006/07/200...-yankees-a.php

I have a game like that on my Wii (Pinball Hall of Fame: the Gottible collection) It has Black Hole, but no Pinbot or Twilight Zone. Oh well, it's a pretty fun game

Criterion should re-release The Silence of the Lambs with an honest-to-goodness awesome transfer.
Criterion was offered the chance to release it on blu, but only after the MGM disc had already been released, so they turned it down. It's a different situation than Brazil, Dazed & Confused and Fear & Loathing because the MGM disc used such an extensive set of extras, and Criterion didn't feel it would be worthy to recycle all the extras and just offer a new transfer. At least that's what I've heard from a source.

So last night I watched The Moment of Truth for the first time and I was wondering if anyone else spotted what looks like the Criterion logo around the 20 minute mark.

The ending is quite redeeming though but sometimes I wish these prison break/escape genre films could show a few more minutes after the actual escape is successfully executed. Bresson's style isn't my style but this film is so tense and edgy at times, I caught myself holding my breath for long periods of time. I just wish I could have a sense of the overall picture rather than the small parts that make up the escape. I keep thinking of Clint Eastwood in Escape from Alcatraz, which I still think is the best prison escape film I've ever seen.
I love prison escape movies, and I cannot get enough of them. There's probably an underlying defect in my psychology, but prison escapes have always appealed to me.

A few notable ones...

A Man Escaped
This Blu-ray has a spectacular sound presentation, and I want to see more of Robert Bresson's films released by Criterion Blu-ray in the future.

Escape from Alcatraz
This has been a favorite of mine since childhood, and it's still my favorite Clint Eastwood movie to date.

The Shawshank Redemption
It's trendy to backlash against this movie, but I am of the unwavering opinion that it is one of the best films ever made, and that there is not a single wasted second in the story.

The Great Escape
This Blu-ray presentation got napalmed by reviews on this site a few months ago, but it looks perfectly fine to me, considering the source material. Most people will be thinking about the sheer awesomeness of the film instead of frowning at the transfer.

La Grande Illusion
StudioCanal absolutely rocked out with this splendid Blu-ray presentation of what was formerly Criterion's first DVD title.

Le Trou
This Becker film is sadly out of print on Criterion DVD, but I hope to see it released on Blu-ray in all its glory at some point. I own the DVD and am holding tightly to it until then.

The Defiant Ones
I would do most anything to see a Criterion edition of this movie.

Brute Force
I hope that Criterion upgrades this superb Jules Dassin film from Blu-ray soon.

Le Cercle Rouge
This is not purely a "prison escape movie", but an escape is featured prominently in the story.

Stalag 17 is coming soon on Blu-ray.

That's pretty cool. The Riverdogs and Mike Veeck are always doing stuff like this. Veeck has an auction every year for The Storm Eye Institute for children with blindness. I got some pretty sweet deals this year.

I feel the same way about prison break films. I own 4 of the ones you have listed as well as Stalag 17 (DVD of course). I also like a great "caper" type film such as "Rififi", "Bob Le Flambour", even "The Italian Job".
Maybe that's a psychological defect of mine - identifying with, or rooting for the bad guy. Hitchcock often lures you into doing this also.

You know, there is another really awesome escape film called Gulag. I'm not sure many people have seen this. It came out in 1985 and was an HBO TV movie. But it starred Malcolm McDowell and David Keith and took place in Siberia. I wish this could have a Blu-ray or even DVD (!) release but sadly it is only available on VHS. The escape sequence/s are pretty fun to watch.

The recent film, The Way Back (directed by Peter Weir), is also a good notable film about escaping from Siberia. I still love Gulag more though.

By the way, David Keith looks so much like Kurt Russell, its ridiculous. Same goes for Nick Nolte and Gary Busey too.

Seems a bit silly to me. Silence of the Lambs being a huge and popular film would sell, especially to those looking to dip their feet into Criterion releases for the first time. Plus, extras are nice but the transfer and encode is the MOST important thing to most film fans.

I know I'd rather splash down $25 for a stunning non-manipulated transfer with a booklet, extras and attention to detail, rather than $5-10 on a so-so transfer with the same extras.

Ahhh... I own The Way Back on Blu-ray, and even saw it at the theater, but I somehow forgot to include it in my list.

You got me thinking about this movie now. I might revisit it this weekend.

I've only seen half of the Great Escape. From what I've seen, it's pretty good.

Yes, a good transfer is what's most important to some... but I see over and over people on these forums who won't buy a movie because it doesn't have all the extras or it have a slipcover. It's happening in the Halloween thread and countless others. Sad. But some people's priorities these days are skewed wrong.

It's actually smart on Criterion's part. There's no guarantee it would sell more than the older version, given that the extras would be the same. It really came down to extras for them, from what I hear. It wasn't worth the cost to take that kind of risk. Now, if MGM hadn't released their disc first (and re-released it 2 more times, once with a DVD and again as part of the Hannibal collection), then I believe they would've said yes.

A Criterion transfer is unmanipulated? Any of them? All of them?

Add: Isn't the "Criterion Treatment" manipulation?

Strange coincidence linked by Criterion releases. I'm glad the press mentions them. Cinematographers as just as vital as the Director and actors to a classic film.
