My Criterion Collection Blu-ray Hopes for 2014:

Le Samouraï (since it's probably not showing up in December 2013)
Point Blank
Alfred Hitchcock's Sabotage, Young and Innocent, Foreign Correspondent
The Vanishing (Spoorloos)
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi (currently out of print)
Kairo (Pulse) (original 2001 Japanese film)
The Earthling (1980)
The Defiant Ones
This Gun for Hire
Un Flic
Sullivan's Travels
Stalker

These were just off the top of my head, so I could probably think of hundreds more.
Don't KINO have the rights to Stalker and also Mirror, Nostalgia?
You should add Gun Crazy to that list aswell.

Re-watching the Andrzej Wadja Three War Films boxset this is an upgrade I'd love.

Yeah. Those are all Kino I think.

Gun Crazy is incredible! I caught it on TCM two years ago and it blew me away. It would make a great double feature with Bonnie & Clyde.

I can get behind Gun Crazy for sure. That's another one that has intrigued me.

I'd love for Kino to get cracking on those Andrei Tarkovsky if they can grab some great transfers.

I still think Cate Blanchett was the top attraction in Blue Jasmine, but there were great performances from all the actors and actresses.
Thanks for the info, i'm really excited to see it. Good to know it's something to look forward to.

A day off. Think I may finally watch Kes. I'm a sucker for anything coming-of-age, and I've had it for well over a year.

Be sure to perk your ears, the accents are quite thick. I think I only caught about 40% of the dialogue.

I always use the subtitle option when I'm viewing a movie for the first time, regardless of the language. I don't mind the subtitles, and they ensure that I do not miss any wording.

At any rate, those of you who are lacking a copy of this movie should get over to Amazon soon.

EDIT: Leon Morin, Priest is selling for $25 on Amazon now.

Le Cercle Rouge appears to be the one in demand, because it's selling for over $100, and almost that much through the third party sellers.
It was from one of the Amazon marketplace sellers that I got my copy. Funny thing...the seller was a local (Greater Boston area) chain store, Newberry Comics, that I had checked out for the OOP titles. And actually, Amazon wasn't selling any themselves. I'm not sure how they work it, but the sale was to the marketplace seller, but "fulfilled" by Amazon.

Léon Morin, Priest I managed to get during the latest B&N sale. Of the 10 OOP (on Blu-ray) titles, I'm missing three: Playtime (which I have in the original 2001 Criterion DVD edition) Le cercle rouge, and Last Year at Marienbad.

Argh. Every Blu-ray of every movie should include subtitles.

This is always my one and only complaint about the Olive Films Blu-rays. Those titles are stellar in every other regard, but the lack of subtitles is irksome.

The only movie I have high hopes for Criterion to release in 2014 (as I wished for the previous years) is Lars Von Trier's Breaking the Waves. That, and maybe Y Tu Mama También by Alfonso Cuarón and Happiness by Todd Solondz.

Ended up watching Shane instead (great film; stunning transfer). But thanks for the advice. I plan on watching it sometime this week.

The dialog is crisp, clean, and stable, while the much needed English subtitles are indeed very good.

That's interesting you do that. I always feel guilty sometimes if I don't have subtitles on. I'm torn about it. At times I feel it adds more information to the film but also distracts the overall film experience. But I find myself shuttling back and forth and sometimes I start the movie off with subtitles on and then switch it off but then later end up switching it on again and sometimes rewinding because I didn't hear or understand the words and replay it again with subtitles. This only applies to English-speaking movies. Of course with foreign films, subtitles are ALWAYS on.

I remember Kes was an English speaking movie that I needed subtitles on. And indeed it has that for sure. Certain British films are so hard to understand because the language is spoken faster and with an accent I'm not used to, that subtitles are almost mandatory. The same went with Quadrophenia and especially Fish Tank, where subtitles were very helpful in understanding what the hell was being said.

Have you read the novel? It's absoutely phenomenal. I found it much more resonant than the movie. Granted, it's still a damn fine movie.

Kes does indeed have subtitles for SDH, most likely activated by your remote. They are mandatory for anyone not familiar with the heavy Yorkshire accents. They will also reveal the use of older (even archaic) English expressions (example, "thee" and "thou") in many conversations, which unless you see it in the subtitles you will likely not understand at all.

I haven't. The only heavy flaw I can lay out against the film is the god awful performance from Brandon De Wilde. Seriously, one of the worst child performances I've ever seen - and he was nominated for an Oscar!
