The same went with Quadrophenia and especially Fish Tank, where subtitles were very helpful in understanding what the hell was being said.
The two English-language films that I felt needed English subtitles (and the DVDs didn't have them, dammit) were:

(1) Atom Egoyan's Felicia's Journey, where Bob Hoskins had an impenetrable accent.

(2) Steven Soderbergh's The Limey, where Terrence Stamp had an accent so thick, you needed a chainsaw to cut through it.

In the latter case, there's even a scene where Stamp's character goes to see an FBI agent:

Stamp: [rants and raves for a significant period of time, in thick accent]

FBI Agent: "OK. There's just one thing I don't understand."

Stamp: "Wot?"

FBI Agent: "Every ****in' word you just said."

I think some films where the characters are really quiet require subtitles, but I haven't seen a film where a guy has an accent so thick you can't understand it.

Wow! I remember liking his turn. It's definitely time for a re-watch, then.

(It can't be as bad as the kid from 'Extremely Loud'...just excruciating)

Andrew Dice Clay was terrific in Blue Jasmine. I could empathize with his character the most, unlike the rest of the self-centered users in the film. While Cate Blanchett was amazing and the use of flashbacks skillful, I ultimately couldn't like this film very much.

These would be wonderful.

I went to see Happiness on a first (and only) date with this guy because his choice of Meet Joe Black was thankfully sold out so I got to choose. He might have thought I had peculiar film tastes, but I don't care -- I loved it!!

I dunno. His expression was the same damn expression from the beginning to the end, and it really sounded like he was just reading off of cue cards.

I refuse to watch that film.

Sometimes I activate subtitles when there are whispering scenes and I'm sometimes disappointed when instead of actual dialogue, it just says "[Whispering]" or "[People talking softly]". You always hope there are words instead of that, because then you can make out hidden or secret/private conversations, but maybe the director never intended for you to know what was being said (so in that case, subtitles are irrelevant).

Yes, I can confirm Kes has subtitles for sure. I never came across a single Criterion Blu-ray that didn't have subtitles in fact. Does anyone know of any that actually does not have subtitles?

What makes Criterion so great is their consistency when it comes to including important features like subtitles.

Kes is probably the most difficult film to understand though (in terms of dialogue), by far.

I get tripped up pretty easily by accents. There were a couple of moments in The Quiet Man where I had to rewind and absorb some thick Irish dialogue, because the Olive Films Blu-ray lacked the subtitles.

That may be why I didn't feel much during and after the ending fight scene.

I thought I was supposed to be feeling something, but it really didn't bother me much because the composition during the entire shootout was first rate.

By the way, did you like Blue Jasmine?

I liked it very much, but that was largely due to all the performances, especially Cate Blanchett's. The surrounding story was a bit too conventional and broadly pitched for my taste. I didn't think Woody took enough chances with this one, you know, it was kind of like an easy layup.

Ah. I think it's my favorite of his since.. I don't know when, really. It felt like a dead serious Allen picture while still feeling like a quintessential Allen picture.

Blanchett deserves whatever praise she receives, and Hawkins, I think, is right behind her.

Agree. Can't believe Hawkins isn't getting more praise.

No love for Midnight in Paris?

(I've always loved Sally Hawkins, so as per usual, I loved her in this)

She's amazing in it. Total, total crime she wasn't nominated for Best Actress that year. She would have been my personal pick to win.

Y Tu Mama También is still in their release queue... Cuaron has been so busy with Gravity for the past 2 years that he hasn't had time to approve the transfer and be a part of the release. But soon!
