In the case of the Shining, wouldn't he have done the protecting because he hated pan-and-scan, not because he hated black bars? Was anyone doing black bars for home video (whether videotape or laserdisc) in 1980? Also, do you know for a fact that he at some point expressed a dislike for black bars, or are you just speculating based on the fact that he protected for 1:33?

Yes, he hated pan-and-scan, not black bars. He didn't want someone else "composing" his shots.

I'm not that surprised. I have mentioned a couple of times in the last year or two that Carnival had been restored and was likely going to be upgraded, and no one responded then either. Having said that, I doubt it has anything to do with anyone's like or dislike of the film. Things just move way to fast on this board.

No kidding... so many things get lost so many pages back sometimes. But it's fun to go back and look for posts, I always find stuff I missed.

And rape shouldn't ever be enjoyable. You're not alone in that respect. If a film deals with the issue respectfully, I have no problem with it.
What about Blazing Saddles?

Hedly Lamar: Qualifications?

Outlaw: Rape, murder, arson, and rape.

Hedly Lamar: You said "rape" twice.

Outlaw: I like rape.

Taggart (laughing hysterically) He'll do!

He said "I bet there's more than you think" (possibly meaning 'I know there are quite a few and I bet you aren't aware of many of them'), not "I bet they do". A quick internet search came up with at least four others besides the ones iScottie mentioned: Chinatown (where the villain Noah Cross raped his own teenage daughter), Tess (where Nastassja Kinski's character is raped by her cousin), Death and the Maiden (where Sigourney Weaver's character had been tortured and raped by fascists while blindfolded, and the plot revolves around whether Ben Kingley's character was one of them), and Macbeth (where, as mentioned here, "When Macbeth’s hired murderers assail Macduff’s castle, Lady Macduff tries to run but finds the murderers raping her female servants. Although raping fits in the play, the play does not mention any raping.")

That entire stretch is comedic gold.

Jesus, I need to get The Producers bluray pronto. Still the funniest film I have ever seen.

Well, I guess it's time to sell my entire Criterion collection.

I can't support a studio that supports fugitives.

Yeah, I'm sure he was thinking of all those movies when making his comments.

I didn't say "all", but he may have known it was more than just one or two (maybe we could...ask him?), which would justify "I bet there's more than you think". Thanks for the eyeroll though, you're a charmer as always!

I'm curious to know whether those who swear off all films by Polanski also do the same for the films of John Landis and Michael Curtiz. Both directors are responsible for deaths on the film set.

i think we talked enough about rape i didnt know about the rape thing, but im not gonna throw rosemarys baby out of the window cuz of that.

im probably gonna spend some money at the current B&N sale and will need some help to decide what movies i should get:

i want movies that have different themes, styles ..... etc...

in my cart are :

Things to Come (i like his books a lot, and own island of lost souls already)

Wild Strawberrys
(seventh seal was awesome.. probably need more bergman?)

YiYi (yiyi and still walking are the only asia criterions i dont own including releases from other labels)

The Magican (bergman again, story sounds very promissing)

Marketa Lazarova (i dont know why but that movie got my attention after taking a look at the screenshots of the review)

Seconds ( i dont own much classic movies from the US and this one looks interessting and is getting great reviews)

so i already got 6 movies ,for the buy 2 get 1 free discount)

or should i remove one of the movies above and add one of these:

The Wages of Fear
Ice Storm
Videodrome (looks like this movie is totally nuts? i liked house !)
Orpheus
A Man escaped

Breathless
Band of outsiders
( i didnt like une femme marie at all)

this are mostly all 29$ movies , i will get some of the more expensiv ones in the november sale to get the most out of the B&N discount.

All the Bergmans are worth getting. You need to add Smiles of a Summer Night and my personal favourite Summer Interlude to your cart.

I think andsoitgoes was the only one who said they swore off Polanski films on principle. Anyway, I just read up on Michael Curtiz and it seems like the degree to which he is "responsible" for the deaths on Noah's Ark would be debatable, there weren't safety regulations in place and he probably didn't do the nitty-gritty planning of how the flooding stunt would work, he may have just trusted the people responsible for engineering it to know what they were doing. As for Landis, he was responsible for putting children in a stunt situation they shouldn't have been in so in that sense he's responsible for their deaths, but aside from the presence of children it doesn't sound like the stunt itself broke any safety regulations.

Lloyd Cole does make a direct reference to the film though, in "Rattlesnakes""

With Landis, some i80's-survivor idiots still DO, believe it or not. (Despite Hypno's point that an unplanned set accident isn't necessarily "evil".)

Oh, and Vietnam vets are still protesting Jane Fonda in "The Butler", but that's only because she played Nancy Reagan.

I'd go for Marketa, Seconds, and Wild Strawberries as they're all perfect. So happy with all 3 of these!
All the ones in your list are great though.

I guess the Polanski hate hit ebay lol. I just got knife in the water for 5$ ill gladly take that deal. I think his movies are amazing.

I saw Fanny & Alexander last night. Maybe I'm in the minority here but I just wasn't feeling it. Just felt overly long. I loved 7th seal and wild strawberrys though oh well. On to the next CC movie here.

Fascinating! (in my best Spock's voice)
