I totally forgot to include Spartacus! I've only seen the film in its entirety once. I guess I don't consider that film a true Kubrick movie because he only directed it. Dalton Trumbo wrote the screenplay. So I think that is the only film Kubrick ever directed where he wasn't really involved much with the story or vision. In fact, I think the studio brought him in to replace another director who couldn't take on that project. In any case, that film is lower on my list... maybe just above Lolita.

Why am I not the only person who doesn't like Lolita so much? I do think that Peter Sellers in that film was brilliant though (but Dr. Strangeglove was his magnum opus).

Great choices. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a transcendent and spiritual experience each and every time for me. It is the closest to true science fiction that I will ever immerse myself in. It is a meditative experience all the same. In space, we move slow, and the movement that occurs in the film feels so real. Barry Lyndon is a classic story of rags to riches and then back to rags. It is a morality tale about the dangers and consequences of blind power and success. Though it is not one of my favorite Kubrick films, it is the lighting and camera work that sets this film apart from any other in terms of technical achievement.

Barry Lyndon almost looks too good.

I was initially distracted because I knew it was done with natural light. That's the kind of thing that can get in your head and take you to some degree or another out of a film.

But eventually I stopped being distracted by that and was distracted by, well, everything else. The wall fixtures, the wallpaper, the candleholders, the place settings...everything looked so good I honestly had a hard time paying attention to what was going on.

And it wasn't overly busy or anything...there was just so much to see and every little detail was worth looking at.

Glad the Kubrick polls aren't over yet; picking a favourite Kubrick film is very difficult, everytime you see a film of his, you put that film at the top of the pack. However at this present time my favourites are;

Pretty much all his films are classics, A Clockwork Orange is a cult classic, whilst Barry Lyndon and The Shining are milestones of their genres respectively. I put Eyes Wide Shut high on the list because its a very personal film for me, it was the first Kubrick film I saw and it was the first '18' rated film I sneaked into (I was 14 when it came out) For me Eyes Wide Shut not only marked Kubrick's swansong, but it marked the end of an era and a shift in time. I can't imagine a major studio like Warner Bros. releasing a film like this these days, especially at the height of the summer blockbuster season (the film was released in July 1999) It's disheartening to think how times have shifted and changed.

When the ending to 2001 always comes, I always feel this deep sadness in the pit of my stomach. It is the most unusual feeling I ever experienced in cinema. It is such a mysterious and unknown ending that it is frankly one of the greatest endings in any movie I've ever witnessed. There is just no explanation and no words, which means its pure genius. I don't need to wrap any of this in spoilers as I expect everyone here has seen that movie, but when that StarChild appears, I can only wonder what would happen next. How did time speed up so fast (or slow down) for Bowman? That furnished room with florescent lighting was so sterile and alien to me. How could a human being endure that isolation? Was death in that instance also rebirth? Anyway, these questions have been asked trillions of times, but these are my thoughts.

By the way, on Miami Vice, I somehow was able to purchase the Blu-ray for $5 or 6 a few months ago at a used media store. I was impressed with that film and how the digital video captured the grainy night scenes so well. Natural lighting is everything. Barry Lyndon blew me away with those candle-lit chandeliers... it was truely realistic.

I must say, many people claim that very few movies can top the books they're based on. The Shining is one of the few films that many people say is actually better than the book. I don't think 2001 can lose any bit of its glamour, because Solaris will never come close to matching that film's power.

I was probably about 8-9 when I saw it and did not understand a lot of the subtext the film had (about Victorian repression and the incongruity of such a settlement in an weathered harsh environment), but I could feel the sadness and wistfulness of the film (of course, the beautiful Miranda was the anchor that held my interest). My interpretation of the film then (and to an extent even now) is a Pied Piper like calling to the girls who I imagined went through some enchanted portal to another dimension.

The film that freaked me out as an adult were The Innocents and Peeping Tom.

The movie that freaked me out as a child was called Let's Scare Jessica to Death. While much of the film appears to look silly now, there are some really creepy moments that still work well.

Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, and The Shining have remained my three favorite horror films for quite some time.

Evil Dead II remains a unique classic of horror comedy.
