Why am I not the only person who doesn't like Lolita so much? I do think that Peter Sellers in that film was brilliant though (but Dr. Strangeglove was his magnum opus). |

•Barry Lyndon has to one of the top ten or so cinematographic achievements. I am just a sucker for films that use natural lighting--Malick...Miami Vice (I had to mention it, I saw it for the Xth time today. |

Barry Lyndon almost looks too good.
I was initially distracted because I knew it was done with natural light. That's the kind of thing that can get in your head and take you to some degree or another out of a film. But eventually I stopped being distracted by that and was distracted by, well, everything else. The wall fixtures, the wallpaper, the candleholders, the place settings...everything looked so good I honestly had a hard time paying attention to what was going on. And it wasn't overly busy or anything...there was just so much to see and every little detail was worth looking at. |

Killer's Kiss 13. Spartacus Pretty much all his films are classics, A Clockwork Orange is a cult classic, whilst Barry Lyndon and The Shining are milestones of their genres respectively. I put Eyes Wide Shut high on the list because its a very personal film for me, it was the first Kubrick film I saw and it was the first '18' rated film I sneaked into (I was 14 when it came out) For me Eyes Wide Shut not only marked Kubrick's swansong, but it marked the end of an era and a shift in time. I can't imagine a major studio like Warner Bros. releasing a film like this these days, especially at the height of the summer blockbuster season (the film was released in July 1999) It's disheartening to think how times have shifted and changed. |

By the way, on Miami Vice, I somehow was able to purchase the Blu-ray for $5 or 6 a few months ago at a used media store. I was impressed with that film and how the digital video captured the grainy night scenes so well. Natural lighting is everything. Barry Lyndon blew me away with those candle-lit chandeliers... it was truely realistic. Quote:

Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, and The Shining have remained my three favorite horror films for quite some time. Evil Dead II remains a unique classic of horror comedy. |

When I posted my top 3, I somehow forgot about Lolita! I'm surprised it's so low on people's list. It's very different than the book but it's fantastic in its own right.
So something like this... 1. 2001: A Space Odyssey 2. Lolita 3. The Shining 4. Eyes Wide Shut 5. The Killing 6. Paths of Glory 7. Dr. Strangelove 8. Barry Lyndon 9. Full Metal Jacket 10. A Clockwork Orange 11. Spartacus 12. Killer's Kiss 13. Fear and Desire |
