Yes, I understand just Breathless (& Truffaut's 400 Blows) for now, just in looking through their Godard catalog, "Band" is on my radar. Guess I'll just keep a close eye on it for now.

What are your thoughts about the amazing match cut of the bone to the spacecraft?

[Show spoiler]I've always figured that this cut indicates that, in the grand scheme of things, nothing truly significant has happened between those two moments in terms of human evolution. In other words, early man's encounter with the monolith signaled one important stage of our evolution, while mankind's discovery of the monolith on the moon signaled that we as a species were ready for the subsequent evolutionary step (Bowman into the star child).

Others believe the match cut simply shows that both the bone and the spacecraft are mere tools.
Whoah!
That is a radically different take. I see it as a clean way to bridge years of evolution and technological advance. There's a clear relationship between the monkey employing a bone as a tool and man using the space station as a tool. I see the two big "jumps" as similar in magnitude: from monkey to man & from man to starman.

I admittedly don't follow Criterion licensing agreements too closely...
I've been meaning to pick up The Last Metro.Hopefully, it will still be available during their half-off sale.

thats probably both right. if you think about space and time, our whole existence is only a blink of an eye for the universe.
what did we explore in the last 2000 years? the moon a few times and thats it for the biggest part. what did we really archive since the first moon landing? not that much. will we leave our solar system in the next 50 years? i think we are still like "babys" maybe thats what the star child was about.

its like really believing "god" made us and we are the only living thing in the universe (lol) , there are probably millions of stars that already died before humans even existet.

and if we should ever encounter a alien life form we will probably try to destroy it before we try to understand it , if we did not destroy ourself before that all happens...

I see the prehistoric man learning to use tools under the influence of the monolith (spelled out in clearer terms in Arthur C. Clarke's novel) as Stage One of the evolutionary process, so to speak, while I see the star child as Stage Two. This is not to say that mankind did not advance during the meantime, but that these two moments were clearly-defined stages of mankind.

When I was in high school many years ago, one of my English teachers gave the following essay assignment to my class: "If you could send a time capsule into space as a message to aliens from the human race, what would you send and why?" I wrote that I would send copies of War of the Worlds and Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers so that aliens will understand the horrific beatdown waiting for them if they ever attempt to invade us. The teacher was not enthusiastic about my answer, but she gave me a high score on the essay in terms of my writing ability.

Criterion's site shows Breathless and The 400 Blows as in print. They even put a note on the Doniel set about it not being OOP, but just unavailable (probably meaning it's between printings).

i would prefer it to be the way it was in "stargate" better not let the goauld and this other things from stargate atlantis know how to find earth.
the universe is so big and old, most likely we would get the beat down from someone else ! we are the star child, the infant.

i dont think a infant will beat down someone else out there.

Sorry if this is redundant, but i didn't see it posted back in the last 5 pages or so...

Was looking for a few titles to grab in one of these B2G1 deals and googled OOP Criterion and found this... So i just grabbed Breathless from B&N and 400 Blows from Amazon

http://www.criterionforum.org/listin...pe=0&alpha=oop

Edit: My order from B&N is scheduled to deliver on the 26th as well, assuming Breathless stock is the reason

Just gott off phone with their customer support and they said it is Breathless that is holding up the entire order, they are out of stock. And since I picked the free Member shipping, they can't split ship the order. Just hoping they do get them in!

Well this is the reason i chose them over Deep Discount, i have run into several different items that were out of stock at DDD and they just end up cancelling the order.... Maybe i will cancel the order and try to grab one from Amazon.

who knows.. they just said out of stock but they expected to get more in. if it wasn't part of the but 2 get 1 free i'd just cancel.. she said i could cancel the Breathless order, but then i'd be SOL on the deal. Oh well... been one of those days. all i can do is laugh... should'vejust ignored the sale and bought from amazon or criterion.

This list is pretty much on the mark IMO. Some aren't my favorite films (see sig) but I can appreciate all of them for how they influenced the world of cinema.

I can't believe you just glossed over "Metropolis" and "Escape from New York" like that!

(I know, not Criterion titles!)

Must be "distopian future night" on TCM...

Glad I picked up The 400 Blows during the July B&N sale. I'll have to look for Breathless this weekend.

CriterionForum.org's OOP list includes both of them.

It might just be my imagination, but it seems that Criterion titles are more likely to go out of print if they're French films. I suppose it doesn't help that StudioCanal tends to hover over French film rights like a vulture.
