Speaking of Kino, "Steamboat Bill Jr." comes on Turner Classic Movies tonight at 12am est.

Awesome news, CassavettesGodard! Always in the mood to collect more Oshima (I haven't watched ItRotS yet)!

Now if only TCM would get an HD feed to use whenever possible...

Who owns the rights to Persona, my connoisseur comrades? About time this gets a HD release.

Unfortunately, the rights to Persona and a few select other Bergman titles are owned by MGM, who are currently a complete HD wasteland as no one can seem to get the specific distribution rights figured out. (Heck, they can't even get the Bond movies fully released in a timely manner, so it may very well be a long time before Persona gets the HD treatment unless CC can strike a deal )

There are MGM deals being and have been made recently with Fugitive Kind. So you never know.

Yeah, would be sweet if TCM had an HD channel as well. They show different prints than others, (for example, last time they showed Godard's Contempt, it was a dubbed crappy print, just to do something different) so I can see why most of the films on TCM don't have restored HD transfers yet.

On the other hand, I would guess that some of them do, to the point where the HD broadcast could be the level of upconverted DVD...and I'm sure they're acquiring 1080i materials for new additions in preparation for eventually starting an HD channel.

TCM has an HD channel, guys. It came out in 2009. Your cable companies must not carry it, though, because it's out there for the taking.

Glad to see KINO issuing excellent releases.

There was a time several years ago I went through THREE defective Metropolis DVD's---- all with the same problem (all from B&N). During the "broad" of Babylon scene it went to a green screen. Incredibly frustrating!

TCM definitely has an HD Channel. lol

I've been loving it since my area got it about 7-8 months ago. Their 30 days of Oscar this year was great in HD, as was the Kurosawa tribute last month.

And DVR is an incredible tool.

TCM also posts their 3 Month in Advance Schedule on thier website, so you can go through it and write down anything you really want to see.

Since someone just brought it up, I know they are showing "Persona" in HD on July 2nd, 4:15 AM.

I usually type them on imdb or Amazon.

Sad though... a lot of awesome classics shown on TCM especially from Warner and Universal are now becoming part of their on demand (Warner Archive and Universal Vault) service and on DVD-R's (for $19.99 - no special features). And a lot of the films that were part of box sets, they are slowly being phased out ala OOP.

There are a few titles which SHOULD be on Criterion but are not.

Two come to mind:

La Dolce Vita

and

Persona

Shell, did you read confirmation regarding Thin Red in Nov, or was this speculation? Thanks.

I have DirecTV and no TCM HD. I got the HD package that includes MGM HD and other movie channels like that. I wonder if DirecTV has it in another package. Looks like I will be giving them a call.

I think it's pure speculation he's making for "The Thin Red Line." I haven't read of any confirmed date.
