I have the Tartan DVD, probably the best version out there (if I'm not mistaken), and yeah, this film sorely needs a Bluray treatment.

I'd love to see a CC release of Moonrise Kingdom. I realize it's pretty new, and there's alot more out there that could use a release, but some time in the future wold be nice.

What I'd really like to see get a BD release though is Mulholland Drive.

Just a matter of time, I'm sure.

So I'm guessing it's going to be Monday for December's films announcement? I have a sneaky feeling we're going to get It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World for a Xmas box set.

lot of MoC releases are great , but compared to Criterion many are just barebones. and criterion has much more movies.

I wouldn't say that. While Criterion's DVDs have always been excellent, the Blu-rays are a noticeable improvement. Now, granted, that's not just because of the superior resolution of the format, but generally because of newer restorations being used as sources. Regardless, I'm happy to see Blu-ray upgrades...HD has spoiled me, and I have a difficult time watching SD.

maybe with the upcoming dual format releases we will get more upgrades.
Maybe yes, maybe no. I think it would be more likely depend on:

(1) If there's a improved source that would help make a Blu-ray a marked improvement. If not, there's little point in upgrading.

(2) If the stock on the extant DVD edition is getting low. If they're still well stocked with DVDs of a given film, there's no point in putting out a newer edition, and eating the stock they already have.

Well, von Trier's films tend not to get wide releases regardless of their length.

At any rate, Riget (The Kingdom) got released as two movies, so it's not unlikely in this case.

Not me. I suspect that they'd carried The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but that would be a notable exception, and I don't think I've ever noticed it there (but since I have it, I wouldn't be looking for it).

I don't ever expect to see Criterions at Target or Wal-Mart. Even Best Buy (at least the ones around here (seacoast New Hampshire) carry a limited selection of them...typically the ones they expect to be reasonably popular with the "mainstream", like Brazil and Rosemary's Baby.

Christ, I almost collapsed on the floor back when Criterion released Stagecoach to see copies at a BJ's Wholesale Club. Never saw another Criterion title there since.

My copy of Ran came in a regular blu Amaray case, with a slipcover. It's the only StudioCanal Blu I have (I really need to get their edition of Grand Illusion, though) so I don't know if it's typical. Check the database here for StudioCanal titles, and see which ones say "original pressing in slipcover" on their pages.

Epic Blu-ray haul today...

[Show spoiler]

$76 for The Killing, The Red Shoes, and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. Woo hoo!

After no small degree of hesitation, I decided to sell off my old DVD copies of Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge, since they'll just be collecting dust while I watch the Blu-rays, it would be better for them to find a loving home where they won't collect dust, and the inclination for wanting "backup copies" is probably the first step down the slippery slope that leads to the Hoarders TV show people coming into my apartment one day in the future. I made $60 off of the DVDs, and that helped out with the above purchases. The Twilight Time disc was waiting for me in the mail upon my return home. On top of this, the Dirty Harry Collection box set should be in my mailbox in the next day or two.

No WTF from me. It absolutely deserves a place in the collection.

If anyone is looking to get The Decalogue on DVD (I know it's popular in these parts), there is an Amazon seller with Amazon fufillment selling the 6 disc Korean version for $23.99. It doesn't include A Short Film About Killing or Love, but it does include a documentary about Kieslowski. Does anyone own this edition?

Not 100% Criterion related, but William Friedkin's 1977 film, Sorcerer, will be available on Blu-ray on April 14.

(In case somebody doesn't know, it's a remake of The Wages of Fear)
