I'd love to see more Kiarostami.

Late edit - realized I wrote Color of Paradise, but that's Majidi.

No WTF from me either, but it's with Warner now and that precludes Criterion release, I'm afraid.

I'm guessing that Boy and Eraserhead will be announced on Monday.

On a side note, I really dislike these films in the BBS set. The only one that had some sort of merit in it was Five Easy Pieces. Granted, I haven't seen The Last Picture Show or The King of Marvin Gardens yet, but I disliked the others.

I keep thinking of picking up the BBS set as well, but so far I've only seen Easy Rider. But not sure I wanna blind buy that much. Thining of Netflixing what I can first.

I would say those are the two best films in the entire set (most enjoyable goes to Easy Rider).

Ha. I was thinking of Riget when Sammy posted that he could not endure five hours of Von Trier (or something to that effect).

To an extent, I can sympathize. I have owned Dogville on DVD for over a year now, and I have not seen it yet... And I love Von Trier. Although I am lukewarm on The Idiots and Antichrist, I really do love Dancer in the Dark, Breaking the Waves and Melancholia. Odds are that I will love it, so I don't know what I am scared of.

I can't stand the guy, so.. yeah, it's not for me. Breaking the Waves was long enough.

I'm curious what company is going to distribute this five hour NC-17 picture. On Demand would probably be their best bet.

I'd agree with all of those. I've seen Touch of Evil and that needs a blu-ray release. Great movie. The Warriors needs the theatrical cut on blu-ray, and The Third Man needs to be $19.99 again. I want to check that one out badly.

Does anyone think White Dog or Man Bites Dog will ever see a Blu-ray release from them? I've wanted to get the DVDs but I can't see myself getting DVDs anymore since so much is coming to Blu-ray now, and I can hardly watch anything in SD anyway.

I'm not crazy about the set either, but bought it because Criterion seemed to put so much love into it. Personally, I think The Last Picture Show is the best film in the set. Five Easy Pieces is great and while I never cared much for Easy Rider myself, its impact on cinema is unquestionable.

I really hated Easy Rider.

So far, I'd probably rank it as:

01. Five Easy Pieces (3/4)
02. Head (1.5/4)
03. Easy Rider (1.5/4)
04. Drive, He Said (1/4)
05. A Safe Place (0.5/4)

There's no doubt that Criterion almost always puts out a fantastic release.

However, with this set in particular, I don't really see anything special about the films. Hell, they were better off lost.

Finish off the set, then talk. I'm sure you'll like the other two.

Mm, that's going too far. Easy Rider is among the most influential films in cinema. Dated or not, its preservation is needed.

And what Abdrews said. While I don't think those two films are the best of the set (that belongs to Five Easy Pieces), they certainly are accessible, especially The Last Picture Show.

I feel like a crazy person, because Head (along with Schizopolis) is probably the movie I've watched most in the Collection.

I predict that you're really going to enjoy The Last Picture Show.

Although my favorite film in the set is Five Easy Pieces, which I consider to be Jack Nicholson's best acting of his career, I think that The Last Picture Show has an "old soul" in comparison to the other films in the set, and that it has a lot in common with forlorn older films. Ben Johnson's reminiscing scene by the lake is so tragically majestic and beautiful. On a lighter note, Ellen Burstyn's character is...well...a MILF.

I understand that Easy Rider was one of the first road movies, but I'm struggling to figure out what made it so spectacular. Almost the entire movie consisted of bullshitting with one another and getting high. Plus, I really, really, REALLY hate the hippie movement.

Yes she is (I just googled a picture)

I have a feeling like I'll enjoy TLPS, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to say the same about TKOMG (though the interest seems more up my alley than the other films). I will also agree with you on Jack Nicholson's performance. It was great. No doubt about that.

There are a ton more I'd love to see released but knowing the way Criterion is, it's not feasible to have a listing 50 movies long just for US based films! I'm surprised they haven't done some oddball Korean film yet like "Oldboy"

I officially want to pop in either Easy Rider or The Last Picture Show right now seeing as I have not seen either in four years. Plus, I am going to see Aint Them Bodies Saints later tonight, which I hear takes inspiration from the New Hollywood movement, so the timing is perfect.
