I just don't understand this type of thinking. WB just released it, it looks great and the extras are great. What's the point of wanting Critieron to release it? Just...because? Wouldn't you rather them put the effort into releasing something that otherwise wouldn't get a release?

The restoration masters are there, now would be a good time for a Criterion name-tribute box.

B-but...it DESERVES to be Criterion! That's where all good movies go when they die, if they've earned their film-history reward!

(That's when it starts getting Cult-y. It's about the movie, not about the label, and when it is about the label, you just don't want to admit you want Criterion to be your personal film teacher, mentor and master. The fix just isn't the same when it's not coming from your dealer who cares about you...)

A little piece of film history regarding Boo!- it's a hodgepodge of Universal horror film snippets but it includes the only known clips of The Cat Creeps, an otherwise lost film. I believe the soundtrack discs exist but other than that......gone!

I feel the same. Unfortunately, Warner owns them, so a license to Criterion is unlikely.

(Personally speaking, my favorites from that group are Curse of the Cat People, The Body Snatcher, and The Leopard Man.)

This probably isn't the best thread to get a logical answer to that question, but I share your sentiment. Then again, I absolutely don't understand why people would group their Criterion discs together or care about slipcases, digibooks, etc. Personally, all I care about is having a personal library of films that are interesting/important/nostalgic for me (with a work-related exception for 3D discs).

For that reason, I'd see it as a little bit of a waste for me if Criterion releases Mulholland Drive, Match Point, or Moonrise Kingdom even though I personally love all three of those films. I already own all three on Blu-ray so unless there were significant new amounts of deleted scenes, I'd much rather see different releases.

And mine.

We all have a list a mile long of films we'd like to see Criterion release, either for the first time, or as a DVD->BD upgrade. I'd rather see them spend their time on more foreign or indie/art films than ones that the major studios have released or might have in the pipeline.

I mean, Criterion does, what, about five or six releases a month? They can't release everything.

Sorry to offend.. just thought it would've been nice to have a Criterion release of it since they always seem to do a great job and come up with some great extras. And I figure some crappy movies get double and triple dip treatments.. why not something, if the could find material worth it, that would be worth another version sometime in the future. But that's just my opinion it seems... I didn't expect some kind of Spanish Inquisition...

I own the Warner digibook edition and it is fabulous. As much as I love this film, this is a catalog title from Warner Bros., so I have my utmost doubts this will ever be in the Criterion Collection. But if it ever makes it, I will be the first person to buy it. I could already imagine the front cover artwork.... ahhhh.

Good to know the Warner digibook is great, I do look forward to picking it up soon.

Yes, a great film to pick up if you can get it during the Barnes & Noble 40%-off blu-ray sale like I did.

As many of the others said about "not understanding your way of thinking", well, I totally understand their points. But secretly, I wish every film that is a classic or great would be released by Criterion (in a perfect world, that is).

well if you look at it like that it would be enough if a movie gets a region B release by moc or studiocanal, there would be no need for a region A release by criterion. or the other way around of course. every true movie fan could just import the movies and go region free (in a perfect world there would be no region code at all).

but people dont want to spend money for imports. otherwise people wouldnt be so happy about the criterion tokyo story annoucement since there is already a perfectly english friendly japan release (for a lot of money)

but what about movies that got a crappy tranfer or no bonus features by a other label? or are OOP?

there are already alot of movies out there that actually are perfectly fine and didnt need the criterion treatment , but still here were are.
double and triple tapping on movies that we already owned on DVD, and will probably by again if there will be a 4k disc ...

I'm a huge fan of Chariots of Fire, and I'm compelled to revisit the movie every few months. The existing digibook Blu-ray is incredible, and the video/audio presentations are a thing of beauty.

That said, I would happily purchase the movie all over again if Criterion were to adopt it as a title.

I'm going through the same sort of thing now, since one of my favorite movies, John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13, which I already own by way of the perfectly good Image Blu-ray, is being re-released by Scream Factory. I'm not sure what the added extras will be like, and I have no clue about the transfer, but I am watching with keen interest.

I'm really enjoying The Red Shoes, by the way. I had to break halfway when a friend stopped by to visit, but I'm about to get back into it.

I swear to God that Anton Walbrook (The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, The Red Shoes) is an identical twin to Alain Delon (Le Samourai, Le Cercle Rouge, The Leopard, Purple Noon).

It's magnificent, isn't it?
Gotta love those early Technicolor movies. Really wish Criterion would release some Sirk in Blu-ray.

I just borrowed this from my father, of all people, and the little lady and I are planning a nice dinner and a movie night around it.

Yes, we already had this conversation before about our love for Chariots of Fire. And yes, I tend to do the same thing, about different releases of the same movie, and seeing if the quality is better with one or the other. Recently, The Fugitive got a re-release by Warner Bros. (first time in 7 years) and the video quality of the new release is much better than the initial release back in 2006. I am very much looking forward to buying this on Blu-ray soon, as this is a favorite thriller-film of mine.

When are Criterion announcing their December line up? Is it this Monday or Tuesday?

It's especially odd that they released Magnificent Obsession on DVD a couple of months after they started releasing Blu-rays. You'd think that MO would've been an obvious choice for one of their first Blus.

It definitely deserves an upgrade, along with their other two Sirk DVDs, All That Heaven Allows and Written on the Wind.
