As much as I love Lynch, I could not make it through Inland Empire. I might not have been in the right mood for it, so I know I'll have to try it again, but it's rather low on the list right now.

Blue Velvet is definitely my favorite Lynch film, followed by The Straight Story, Mulholland Drive, and Lost Highway.

I liked TP:FWWM quite a bit more than most. Dune I'm sorry to say, was a criminal waste of a lot of talent behind and in front of the camera. The "Alan Smithee" TV version was just as bad, only there was more of it -- the only virtue being that it had more of Linda Hunt.

I'm not wild about the movie myself (though I haven't seen it since I was 15), but the success of movies like Easy Rider and The Graduate are credited for putting an end to old Hollywood and paving the way for the bolder, more filmmaker-driven works of the 70s. They showed that audiences wanted movies that reflected the world they were living in and starring actors that looked and acted more like them. This is detailed in Peter Biskind's book "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls", the documentary of the same name, and the documentary "A Decade Under the Influence".

Those Mexican built sets were fantastic. Plus, there's a ton of unintentional hilarity to be found. The opening floating head exposition dump is so bloody bizarre, it's hilarious. Dune is a colossal misfire, but not one without its pleasures.

I still need to make it past chapter one of Herbert's original novel.

I've heard so much about that book. I will get my hands on it this winter (after I make my way through "Midnight Movies" and a bunch-o Pauline Kael.

Hunh. I can't count the number of times I've read the novel. Definitely one of my favorite SF novels. The classic SF novel that I can't make it through is Heinlein's Starship Troopers -- I've tried at least three times, but never got past the halfway point.

I've been meaning to see Star 80. Does anybody feel that the film should get a spine?
I feel like All That Jazz would make a nice double bill with Synecdoche, New York, the way the character's work bleeds into their life and vice versa leading up to an
[Show spoiler]emotional climactic death sequence
. I'd also love to see Star 80 get a spine, I even prefer it to All That Jazz, but both are really great. They're also similar in the way that Eric Roberts' character almost aspires to Joe Gideon's position and both films have this almost rhythmic editing at times that can get quite hectic. Eric Roberts is so damn good in it and it's a real shame he didn't get bigger roles, although that hasn't seemed to stop him acting, I'm checking his imdb page and he's been in like a hundred films in the last few years alone.

Inland Empire is something else, I will tell you. The first go around, I was left cold and confused, then the second time, I just let it all wash over me & I swear, it was almost a religious experience. I was living Inland Empire, not merely watching it.

I can't wait to see the film for a third time on my 55" setup. Should prove to be very fun.
Lynch's Dune is still such a strange movie to me. It hasn't aged well in my opinion (much like Brazil). I do own the Blu-ray of Dune and I enjoyed watching it again, but that is probably the most difficult/problematic film David Lynch ever directed. He might even admit it himself (he's not cut out for big blockbuster films, ya know?).

Inland Empire is such a bizarre and dreamy film. Laura Dern scares the living daylights out of me in that film. Many scenes play as nightmares, more than dreams. I cannot say I've experienced that film on the level that you have (as a "religious experience"), but I can understand how some people can be affected by that movie.

Having a 55 inch screen is really nice but I'm eyeing those HD projectors that can project up to 120 inches or something like that. Right now I watch on my 48 inch Philips HDTV, but man, having a massive projected screen/wall would rock.

Ok, I just went out of my head a little, read in somepages on the web that Merchant/Ivory film where going OOP from criterion due to a lawsuit or something, I wanted to get Howards End, so I went ahead and bought from Amazon warehouse deals used "very good condition" ( 23,90 ) so my 2 questions are: did I over reacted? and do you guys have experience with criterion titles from Amanzon Warehouse? are they in good condition?
I hope i did good

Yes, that film is truly nightmarish. Almost an excruciating experience considering its length.

Yes, all of the titles they licensed from Merchant Ivory have gone OOP. That includes 18 titles issued as "The Merchant Ivory Collection" on DVD, including Howards End, which later joined the "official" Criterion Collection. And it was due to a lawsuit between Merchant Ivory and Criterion's owner, Janus Films over distribution rights to the films. Supposedly, the legal wrangling is all over, and everyone's happy, but I haven't heard anything about Criterion reacquiring the rights to the films again.

I wouldn't say that you over-reacted, if you really wanted the Criterion BD of the film. I'm not sure what the "Amazon Warehouse" is. If you're happy with the price, and it's in good condition...

To be Honest, the only Lynch I need right now (besides Eraserhead) is The Straight Story. I can make due with my German Blurays of his other films, just, somebody, please release The Straight Story.

I hope there is still hope for Maurice in Bluray, at least from someone else.

I could definitely see Criterion releasing it. I don't think it's that's great, but I know people who think it's really good.

it was recently re-released as well, so those outrageous ebay prices shouldn't be an issue anymore

November was crazy awesome, but with the rumored titles we know (or think) are coming, December could be equally amazing.

There are two ways to find the phantom pages:

Simply type a name of a person not currently represented in the Collection (Clint Eastwood for example) into Criterion's search bar and then see if that person already has an explore page on the site. http://www.criterion.com/people/120838-clint-eastwood

To find the phantom pages for the movies that will be announced today, all you have to do is go to the last person's page that was put into Criterion's database and then increase the number in the url by one. Right now Mitsuhiro Mori was the last person to be added for last months Tokyo Story upgrade with the url http://www.criterion.com/people/121416. If you change the 121416 to 121417 right now, you will get an error message because the next page yet to be uploaded, but if you keep trying, the page will show up sometime today. Of course once page 121417 is up you then move onto 121418 etc. If you go down from page 121416 you will see all the pages that were created for Frances Ha and the other November releases.
