I think that's what added to the greatness of the film.

I prefer the remake as well, but part of it might have to do with my watching it first. I think people tend to prefer whichever version of a movie they see first. (Generally speaking)

Criterion's set is labeled as "No. 1" on the cover.

I wish Moolaade would come out on Blu-ray, especially Criterion.

That Autumn Sonata review got me excited. I've only seen it once, but I loved everything about it.

Can't wait.

I just finished watching the five hour + version of Fanny and Alexander. I'm just blown away from this film. I had to watch it in parts since it can be a slog to get through. The acting in this film is just enormous.

Glad that you enjoyed this awesome Bergman film (my favorite Bergman film that I've seen, in fact).

I've always watched the long television version in one sitting, but I have to turn off my phone, clear my schedule, and tune everything else out during that time. It's always oddly refreshing.

Fanny and Alexander is one film I plan on watching around Christmas time, and I'm going to try and do it in one sitting.

I love it.

It's a great film to watch at Christmastime.

On a side note, I'm watching The Housemaid right now (the one that's included in the upcoming Scorsese box set). I must say it's pretty good and fun to watch. Thank you, Mr Scorsese and all those involved in the project, for unearthing these lost gems from obscurity.

Thanks Great Owl. One astonishing scene is
[Show spoiler]when Isak reads a story to Fanny and Alexander and eventually finishes it from memory. That scene seems to have been done in one take similar to the one in Winter's Light

I was just thinking this morning about how I want to try to rewatch Fanny and Alexander at Christmas time. Great minds must think alike.

Not only is Fanny and Alexander one of my favorite Bergman films, it is also probably one of my favorite films from any director.

That's a great sequence. I also love Helena's discussion about how we all act in different roles during our lives.

I'm definitely going to revisit the movie again in December as a Christmas present to myself.

How's Nashville? I did like a couple of Altman's 70s works like McCabe and Mrs. Miller and 3 Women.

I saw “Repulsion” last night for the first time. I’d be interested to know if ppl here in the community like this film. Some of the photography is nice and the soundtrack is full of some pretty cool effects that help establish the tone, but I got bored with it after about 45 minutes. I did a keyword search on this thread and if I did it correctly, the title “Repulsion” hasn’t been mentioned since 2009.

One of my favorites in the collection.

Far superior to Rosemary's Baby, in my opinion.

Essential viewing, both as one of Altman's very best and as a pivotal film in 70s cinema. No need to enjoy country music or know anything about that scene to enjoy the movie, BTW.

It's probably Altman's best expression of the style that would come to be known as "Altman-esque"--a cast of dozens who pop in and out of the frame just as they pop in and out of the narrative, all of them grounded in realism but most of them also saddled by very-human (often bumbling and comic) foibles and flaws. The way the film makes the viewer feel the interconnectedness of his massive cast of characters is brilliant.

You make a fair and passionate delivery.

And I did see Altman's final film, The Prairie Home Companion, so I won't be TOO alien with the country music genre if I give this film a chance.

I'd also like to mention the masterful use of overlapping dialogue which is also part of Altman's trademark style
