Yep, but it's back home, where I won't be until December. I may be getting it (along with Autumn Sonata and La Cage aux Folles) much sooner than expected, because a former co-worker may be moving up north to work with me.

So I watched Heaven's Gate the other night. I like the new color scheme on the disc, but is this another instance of director revisionism where he went back and changed the color timing (all other home video releases had a faded almost sepia quality to it). I know it was restored so it would look a little more vibrant, but the color seems much brighter than even what the color is on the trailer and tv spot on the disc.

Did you see the Restoration Demonstration on Disc 2 (I believe)? The before and after's (shown by way of swipes) are pretty jawdropping.

Yes I did, but I am wondering if the original look of the film itself had a faded quality to it, to make it looke old. I understand the whole restoration aspect, but am curious as far as is this not just a case or a restoration, but whole new color timing too. The film has a much browner look in the trailers/tv spot on the disc.

I like the more vibrant look myself.

There's a lively discussion going on in the thread for the 35th Anniversary Blu-ray of John Carpenter's Halloween about this same sort of thing. That film looks different on the new Blu-ray than it has ever looked on any previous home video format, but this new edition was signed off by the Director of Photography and approved by Carpenter.
(If you have some free time and want to be entertained, check out the Halloween thread, because people are now debating about autumn leaf change seasons in California versus leaf change seasons in Illinois.)

The technology to restore films to the look of their original theatrical run now exists, so it's not uncommon to notice differences between the color timing and such from earlier Blu-ray, DVD, or VHS editions. The two wrenches thrown into this equation, however, are that most of us do not remember the exact color timing of a movie that we may have seen at the theater eons ago, and that filmmakers may now have the technology to make a film look the way that they always intended it to look, even if that look may vary even from the original theatrical run.

A similar outburst occurred with fans of the Extended Edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, because that film sports a green tint that is slightly more prevalent than the DVD edition. It's the sort of thing that your Average Joe Six-Pack would never notice, but incites huge debates on Blu-ray.com.

In both instances, I'm inclined to toe the company line and take the filmmakers' word for it that the latest edition is the "correct" edition.

This is another one of those Blu-ray conundrums that will drive us insane if we spend enough time dwelling on it.

Like I said I prefer this colorful (which it isn't like oversaturated craziness or anything) Heaven's Gate. I just was curious if maybe this origianally did have a sepia and faded look to the color in order to evoke a mood of older times (I think many films from the era that were period westerns went for this look). It'll be interesting to see when something like Bound for Glory makes it's way to blu ray, because I'm preaty sure that's another one that had that old photo look to it.

Heaven's Gate really is a cool-looking movie, and I think that the color timing puts me square into the setting of the story. I can see how the original theatrical run might have fallen more in line with what Western films typically looked like circa late 1970s-1980, though.

Of course, in many cases, there is no way that even the filmmakers remember what the films originally looked like.

A man escaped or days of heaven.

There is a (in my opinion ) great Salo Blu-ray by BFI available.

By the way have you received any packages from the B&N B2G1F sale yet?
