6 movies at about $10 a piece. As long as you don't try to chow em all down in a couple days, it should prove quite the adventure. To be honest, if I had to choose between either my Cure ticket (or NIN ticket for that matter) or the World Cinema set, it would be a no brainer. The World Cinema set will win the battle. I've been eyeing the DVD versions of these films for years now. Finally, they will be mine

That'll work.

If it's really amazing on a truly twisted and insidious level, and it's his best book in a couple of decades, I'll say, 'Full Dark, No Stars.'

Just watched Stromboli (Italian Version) and I absolutely loved it. It started off a bit slow for me, but Acts 2 and 3 were really great. It's nice to see how a woman finds faith in the middle of a crisis directly relating to her (3.5 / 4).

My advise to you guys is to jump on the "3 Films" set. That film alone is well-worth the money. I'll let you know how I like the other 2.

Oh, by the way, before I get to my book, I was going through my CD collection this past weekend and thought that this would suit one of the upcoming October titles...

Fugazi – "Cassavetes"

"Crush my calm you Cassavetes
I was sitting tight so quiet quiet
In the dark till the lights came up my heart
Beating like a riot riot
Hollywood are you sitting on a sign
For someone to come on bust a genre
You poor city of shame
Ask me what you're needing
I'll sell you his name

cos he was the one to send it with truth
That's something from someone and Gena Rowlands

complete control for Cassavetes
If it's not for sale you can't buy it buy it
Sad-eyed mogul reaching for your wallet
Like hand to holster why don't you try it try it
Hollywood are you waiting on a sign
For someone to come on bust a genre
You poor city of shame
Ask me what you're needing
I'll front you his name

cos he was the one to send it with truth
that's something from someone and Gena Rowlands"

I am also wondering this.

I pulled the trigger on the set from Amazon yesterday (Criterion doesn't ship to Australia, so there wasn't any point waiting, and I'm thinking I might go all out and get the Zatoichi set from the B&N sale in November...)

So much controversy around this thing. Guy doesn't sound very pleasant, to say the least.
The closer this comes to being released, the more it's looking like it will be a disaster. Likely a fascinating disaster, but a disaster nonetheless. This reminds me that I need to watch my copy of The Secret of the Grain.

I've been watching the Italian versions and I'm content with them.

I dunno about that. The reviews have been glowing, and I imagine this constant controversy will help whoever actually wants to see this thing.

I hate the fact I don't have any money right now for this flash sale. Can't wait for Barnes and Noble. Hopefully I can get at least 3 movies

How odd. I've been looking through my stuff and I don't think I have Full Dark, No Stars. Which is doubly odd because I really like his anthologies/novellas.

I'm going to have to fix that.

[Show spoiler]And since we're on a book tangent, I don't know if you're an Anne Rice fan but I read the first Wolf Gift book a few weeks ago and it was a very fun read. Not exactly light but definitely much less ponderous than she often gets. The second one is going to be released 10/15 and while I'm not sure I liked the first one enough to jump on it right away I'll be tempted.

Most of the reviews I've read have said great things, but ever since I read Mark Peranson's piece in Cinema Scope on the film, my interest has been far more cautious.

I just finished watching the 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman set. I'm honestly speechless. This is my favorite collection in the catalogue since Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy. Overall, I would rate it 3.5 / 4.

The first film in the set, Stromboli (3.5 / 4), is conveniently my favorite film in this set. In the film, Ingrid Bergman plays a young woman who marries an Italian fisherman and moves out to his village of Stromboli with him. Once there, she realizes that the life she envisioned is not and will not ever be what she had hoped for. The second film in the set, Europe '51 (3.5 / 4), is my second favorite film in the set. In the film, Ingrid Bergman plays a rich socialite who decides to dedicate her life to the poor and homeless after the death of her young son. The third film in the set, Journey to Italy (3 / 4), is my least favorite from the set (but still a good film). In the film, Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders portray a middle-aged couple who head out to the Italian countryside to settle a recently deceased relative's estate. The couple are on the verge of falling out and retreat into their memories and fantasies of the life that could have been.

The films are very similar in numerous aspects. The first aspect is that they all possess a very realistic flavor. Being that they are part of the Italian neorealism movement, Rossellini puts the viewer into the streets of these areas right along side the character. He makes us feel as if we are right there along with them and experiencing life as they do. The second aspect is that the last fifteen minutes of each film is the most critical. It seems to be the moment where the characters essentially get a reality check and realize what their actions have resulted in. The third aspect is that all of the films possess some sort of religious element. Whether it's finding faith during a difficult period or being able to have an honest conversation with a significant other, Rossellini tackles all and then some.

Long story short, buy this set with confidence.
