I agree. Considering the fact that some characters in Stromboli deliberately speak English or Italian (the husband alternates between both) and the English language version on the criterion disc maintains that aspect. And even though its listed as "english language" version it doesnt mean its the butchered US theatrical cut.

And in Europe 51 half the actors spoke Italian on set, half spoke English (including Bergman and actors playing her husband and mom). The dialogue appears to be recorded after filming so theres an all Italian track or an English track, its all dubbed. Ingrid Bergman's voice is only on the english one and since her performance is the most important in that film, I go with the English version. You lose alot of the performance when you watch Ingrid Bergman act without her real voice.

I'm not sure if she did the Italian dub for Stromboli or not, but she definitely didnt for Europe 51, and her characters are clearly speaking English in both films.

The couple are on the verge of falling out and retreat into their memories and fantasies of the life that could have been.
FYI, in Before Midnight (which I know you're a fan of), Delpy's character vaguely references the film. I can't remember the exact line, but it (obviously) relates to the situation at hand.

I ordered mine from Amazon yesterday, it shipped yesterday and will be here today or tomorrow. Depending on where it shipped from.

Anyone have "Letter Never Sent"? Amazon has it for $19 right now.

Never seen the film, but the description sounds wonderful. Maybe someone will know more.

Thanks! When I do buy 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman, I'll be going through all of the versions, of course, but it's good to know which one to check out first. (I also appreciated your recommendation to watch the 1.66:1 version of On the Waterfront first a while back. Although I prefer the 1.85:1, I agree that the 1.66:1 is the best initial viewing experience for that film.)

With my recent Blu-ray purchases, I've fallen into the habit of watching the actual film with undivided attention, watching all or most of the special features, and then listening to the commentary track. I like immersing myself in each film for a short while. With these Rossellini/Bergman films, I can see myself watching both version of the films back-to-back.

Letter Never Sent won my vote for Best Criterion Title of 2012. I love the film with an insane enthusiasm.

I will not delve too deeply into the details of the story, except to say that four Russian geologists gets more than they bargained for when they are searching for diamonds in the remote forests of Siberia.

A forest fire scene provides the main backbone of the film, and I am in awe of how the filmmakers pulled this off. It really looks as though they burned down half of Russia just to make this movie.

I probably speak for everyone here when I say that I'm tired of action movies that show people running through flames or running away from explosions without so much as a scratch. Letter Never Sent keeps it real. If a flaming tree branch falls on you, then that's all she wrote. The movie brings fire and smoke into your own home like no other work of cinema has ever done, to the best of my knowledge. After that, you get no relief whatsoever, because the movie then brings snow and coldness into your home like few movies have ever managed to do. You get the most brutal of both worlds in a film.

This is one rugged, beautiful, intense, poetic, and mind-blowing work of foreign cinema that needs more viewers on these shores.

Be careful with that app. Sometimes they do not deduct the shipping if your order qualifies for free shipping.

Lust, Caution - Not sure which studio owns it but Criterion should release it. I would like to import the Korean 7.1 DTS release which I hear is really good. I think Criterion would be able to do the film justice on BLU for the U.S.

Yeah, same with me and "To Be Or Not To Be". I'm actually surprised they shipped it at all.

Honestly, I thought "Before Midnight" throughout the entire film. I could see a lot of parallels between Delpy / Hawke's characters and Bergman / Sanders' characters.

I guess the most obvious thing would be the falling out after x amount of years of marriage.

But I thought you were "contempt" with this set, though.
