It's either an HDTV or a high definition projection!
Agree totally. I don't get it. But make no mistake it is here to stay. HDTV production is scaling back a bit due to the cell phone/tablet love. Amazes me how addicted some (most) are to those devices. No doubt in my mind we are going to be the spaceship passengers from Wall E in 20 yrs. or so.

I also saw Young Girls of Rochefort, but couldn't make it to see Lola so I'm trying to track down a good copy of it on any format.
I really regret not going to that. The biggest thing I miss about being up North now is that I can't make it out to the Lightbox. Probably my favorite place in the city. I've been looking at their fall programming and there is so much I am missing. I'm home for a few weeks around Christmas, so I'm hoping to find the time for a few trips out.

Any Toronto types been to or are going to any of the Guillermo del Toro master classes at TIFF?

It's actually scary to think that that could be a possibility. A world where we are just slaves to the media in our faces as we sit comfortably on our chairs that take us every where we go.

I blame the companies oversaturating and pushing the technology further for the small sized tablets/phones, and must blame ourselves for eating it all up and just demanding more, more, more!

Let's just hope it won't happen while we're here! I'd like to still enjoy my physical discs of the classics!

By the way, this question isn't just for you, but for anyone else reading, anyone know when Criterion is doing the Blu Ray release for Throne of Blood??? I'd love to see that on bluray!!

People now have the ability to upload movies in their entirety onto YouTube, and I am guilty as charged of watching a few of these to decide whether or not I want to make a blind buy of a Blu-ray, or if I'm just bored in front of my computer. It's definitely not the ideal way to view a film, but it is a free method of ascertaining whether or not something fits my tastes without taking picture quality into consideration. One of the upcoming Twilight Time titles, The Other, is up there, and I'll probably watch it soon to decide if it's worth having.

The last film that I watched on YouTube was the 2012 remake of Red Dawn. Say goodbye to The Great Owl's indie credibility.

You know, the funny thing is that it's not like they were defacing the Sistine Chapel or anything like that. I've always been a huge fan of the original Red Dawn, but I think that it's a pretty idiotic movie in several regards.

I just hate that the remake did not show the paratroopers landing behind the high school and opening fire on the students. That's what I loved so much about the first film. I've always thought that, if such a scenario really did occur, it would obviously be traumatic and terrifying, but it would at least get me out of sitting through a day of school.

In the remake, the paratroopers wake everyone up early on a Saturday morning. Screw that noise.

I don't have a problem watching movies on my 17"-screen laptop. As you say, it's not ideal, but sometimes I just have to be convenience's b|tch. Of course, there was a time when I was "between TVs" as it were, and I was watching movies on a borrowed 13" black-&-white TV, so I'm not adverse to making do.

Now watching a movie or TV show on a phone is just absurd. Fortunately, I'm never tempted to go to that dark side, as I have one of those special phones where you punch in numbers and talk to someone rather than play music, video games, or movies.

Well, one could argue that deciding to watch Red Dawn is thinking independently.

I feel it's heavily implied in the film that
[Show spoiler]she intentionally killed her son. It's been a while since I saw it, but I believe she's the one who puts the baby monitor on mute, the ballons, bear, and chair by the window which is open (it's a bit strange to have a window open in the peak of Winter), spends the past year mutilating her son's feet so that he'd slip, and she's in complete control when having sex with Him, controlling where he is focusing visually and muffling his hearing with her moans. When Him pieces it all together (or at least once she believes he has when he finds an important clue, the shoes) she turns on him. Her grieving and mental state is far more understandable when you consider she has just committed infanticide. Combined with her self-pity and rationalization of her acts by saying that her son didn't think enough about her problems (despite being at an age when he wouldn't even be able to differentiate his own perspective from others), the film to me is an exploration of the idea of infanticide and what one chooses to attribute such an evil act to.

I have no problem with it, especially if I've already seen the movie once. I've already "experienced" the big screen splendor, so I can easily watch a film on a phone or iPad and focus more on the the story and characters. It doesn't take away from any previous "big screen" experiences I've had. Plus, the visuals aren't gone, they're just smaller.

My question to you folks is, do you think he wrote this film as a criticism of how women are "evil"? Everything in the film seems to be centered around that bizarre notion. I understand this is his first entry in the "Depression" trilogy, which is closely related to his own dealings with it, so it's possible that maybe he had a significant other that caused him great emotional harm, leading him to right this.
You've seen Antichrist three times...but still haven't seen Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark or Dogville (or even Idioterhe) ONCE? I know they are ONLY on DVD, but still. Those three films (alongside Melancholia) are all his best.

Venture outside of BluRay every once in a while.

God, I wish. As soon as I saw announcement that del Toro was doing a master class on one of my favorite Cronenberg films, I was crushed that I wouldn't be home in time.

This is something I've been doing a lot lately. It's allowed me to catch up on some Bergman films I hadn't seen, as well as Andrei Rublev, which I just finished. I've also got a few DVDs coming from the UK that still haven't been given the blu-ray treatment (L'avventura, L'eclisse, Cries and Whispers, Nostalghia). I would have gone with the Criterion releases of the first three, but I'd rather drop less on them now, then go with Criterion when inevitable upgrades come around.

I too was al ittle disappointed with that scene. I remeber watching that movie as a high school student and being very shocked with the scene, and really was left with a kind of "what if..." feeling. I didn't hate the remake, but still wasn't as good as the original. Wolverines!!!

Nostalghia unseen, I think you made wonderful choices, Brandon. I think you'll find those films very noteworthy.

But back to my point, I just think its crazy that BluRay can blind some people, sure, there's nothing wrong with seeing beloved films over and over, but when it prevents you from seeking out the director's other work, something's wrong. Take Katherine Bigelow's work for example. Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, Point Break & Near Dark are all superb, but fans of those films should also seek out Strange Days. It's only on DVD, sure, but it's one of her most intriguing films!

This will be a necessity for me during the October horror month, because my DVDs are the only way that I can watch The Vanishing, Carnival of Souls, Vampyr, Equinox, and the wonderful Val Lewton Horror Collection

The season is just around the corner!

I find a stellar DVD transfer can also look as good as a 3/5 PQ Blu-ray, I watched The Merchant of Four Seasons this morning and I was surprised by how damn good it looked. Ultimately though I'm not much of a stickler for quality, with Criterion, upgrades are at the bottom of my wishlist. In the last year I've even projected several films on VHS (even Betamax one time) that weren't available any other way.

I think next sale I'm going to go with:

Seconds
Bigger Than Life
The Game
Royal Tenenbaums
Last Temptation of Christ
Kiss Me Deadly

I haven't seen Seconds, Last Temptation, or Kiss Me Deadly but I hear that they are both outstanding films and their Criterion transfers are magnificent. I might add M to my list depending on my budget.
