No, because Studio Canal actually owns a good number of films that Criterion distributes and when Studio Canal decides to release their own blu-ray, it's not gonna be released by another company. Studio Canal, along with other studios, only license out the films to Criterion for a certain period of time, I'm sure, but Studio Canal owns them... not Criterion.

That's why 23 Criterion titles just recently went out-of-print at the end of March because Studio Canal took them back for their own benefit. That's the same reason "Ran" or "Contempt" never got released on blu-ray by Criterion and why "The Third Man" went out-of-print.

Unless someone else wants to say otherwise, I think Criterion is basically a middle-man between the studios and customers.

Should probably make a future out of print risk due to the Studio Canal thing so people don't have to scramble at the last moment.

Last Year At Marienbad is the one I am surprised Criterion still have considering it is one of the Studio Canal releases already in the UK. Have not paid much attention if any others are Studio Canal though.

Other than Ran I didn't think the first batch of Studio Canal releases in North America were that bad so I don't get the hate. And when it comes to Ran while I like to think Criterion would do better I also have some doubts since Kagemusha is the one Criterion Blu-Ray that also left me underwhelmed. The times I could see it bugging me more are times like Pierrot le fou where Criterion kept the color filters it had when it was first screened and Studio Canal removed those. I hate color filters like that but it was how it was meant to be so I prefer seeing it how it was meant. And it isn't annoying constant filters like South Pacific at least.

The other thing is there are only so many releases Criterion can do and I know most of us in this thread have lone wishlists as is. So the Studio Canal collection at least allows them to pursue other movies while still getting some decent releases from Studio Canal that otherwise might not have even been on Criterion's to do list or ages away.

i've posted this several times but here goes again. i saw Ran 35mm in March (part of AK centennial celebration) projected @a local indie house w/NICE a/v tuned.

the defects/blurriness/soft PQ you see is in the original film negative. obviously they're pretty much all from Studio Canal. so unless Criterion found a print NOT provided by Studio Canal, it would've been more/less similar PQ. less distracting and properly framed i'm sure, but noless "BETTER". the key for Ran is finding an all new film negative that is NOT blurry. the blades of grass are blurry even on 35mm playback.

back to Criterion, how many BDs for July 3? does this mean 3 for August as well?

How do you think that we're supposed to determine how many blu-rays Criterion has planned to release for August based off of the number they're releasing in July?

There are five releases scheduled for June, right? So, doesn't that mean there should've been five releases for July? I'm sorry, but the answer is 'no'.

There's no mathematical formula for determining how many movies that Criterion will release each month. Criterion's gonna release whatever they want and whenever they want within their means, I would say. I would only expect 3 to 4 blu-rays per month from Criterion and when we get more than that, then we can all say "Yippee!!".

It's been mentioned before, but Criterion's agreement with "Last Year At Marienbad" is with Rialto Pictures, I believe. That's why it's not in danger of going OOP anytime soon.

Yup, I just noticed that it looks like licensing went to Lionsgate in this case. I didn't know StudioCanal is owned by Vivendi and owns the third largest film library in the world They own Carolco (Terminator 2), De Laurentis, Embassy, Alexander Salkind, EMI and Lumiere (The Third Man) hmm I gotta pay more attention

Trust me, it's there too. Fool that I am, I turned down $ 35 first offer I got a few days ago...I paid about $ 35 w/shipping from Amazon, now it's this albatross around my neck.

In my defense : I have since gotten Prime, and I face the fact that I haven't the patience for foreign language films with subtitles.

I swear I thought this was a joke at first.
then it dawned on me that you weren't kidding.
I think you may have stumbled into the wrong thread.
don't give up so easily.
the best thing imo is try 30 minute watching intervals for a while with all subtitled films.
it will make a difference.
there's nothing wrong with watching a foreign film in 4 parts.
it works wonders, trust me.

Hehe... I'm sure you will find someone who will buy it...but yeah, you should have taken it for $35 when you had the chance. Even on eBay, the most I have seen it go for is $18- $25 used.

Also, Criterion did not so much "lose" the titles as Studio Canal's license agreement on the titles expired and they refused to allow Criterion to renew it. That's why many Studio Canal titles from Criterion are still in-print and available, even if Studio Canal puts them out on BD, Criterion can sell their edition until the license for that specific title runs out.

I am unsure, however, if that would allow Criterion to release coveted Studio Canal DVD titles on Blu-ray simply because they're within the contract, as contracts may be format-specific.

Reading on in that thread, its pretty sad that people have dismissed what the guy who worked on the transfer said. How many of these armchair quarterbacks have any background in film restoration? Yet they're not convinced by the guy who had the 35mm print in his hands! Not to mention the CC Blu-ray isn't out yet and the discrepancy is so slight that 99% of people (CC fanatics) wouldn't notice a difference between the two Blu-ray unless they were scrutinizing screenshots.
