Most are on MGM (except for Sony, which still has American Pop on Crackle.com), and wildly overpraised by people who grew up in the 70's/80's, and overmythologized "edgy" animation because they thought "Disney had it coming".
The younger kids seem to have inherited the "myth" today from the older generation who were actually there, and...I don't really know why. ![]() |

I listed Tabu as my favorite film of the 1930s. Absolutely love that film. NEED MORE MURNAU ON BLU-RAY!

Isn't a domestic Blu-ray release of Murnau's Sunrise on its way to us?
I've been tempted to order the MoC release time and time again, but I'll wait until I hear more about the edition that hits our shores. Murnau fans will take interest in the film, Becoming John Ford, that is included as a supplement to the Twilight Time Blu-ray of Ford's Drums Along the Mohawk. The documentary goes into a good bit of detail about how Murnau's filmmaking style was a notable influence on Ford. I'm ready for the Kino Blu-ray of Nosferatu to come rock my world in early November. |

Just curious how people organize their large Criterion film collections.
I used to go by spine number but I was often having a hard time finding certain films or picking which film I would want to watch. I recently reorganized as follows and LOVE LOVE LOVE it (along with how many blu titles I have): All arranged by Spine into these categories: Classics (USA and UK films pre 1967) - 42 titles Contemporary (USA and UK films 1967 on) - 59 titles Foreign Classics (All other Countries pre 1966) - 57 titles Foreign Contemporary (All other Countries 1966 on) - 62 titles Documentaries - 10 titles (this includes things like Brakhage and Hollis Frampton) Reasoning: Picking a different year for USA/UK vs Foreign was easy for me. In the USA, 1967 was kind of the year films changed to me with the release of The Graduate and Bonnie & Clyde. In other countries I say the year before. The only foreign titles in 1966 are the Battle of Algiers and Tokyo Drifter which I felt were more contemporary to go with 1967's Branded to Kill. Likewise the only USA/UK titles in 1966 was Cul-De-Sac which I thought went better with 1965's Repulsion. So this adheres to the year rule I setup well to me. |

It probably won't be as inexpensive either. I'll bide my time, though.
I've been planning the future of my Blu-ray collection over the past few days. I've been quite taken with the film noir offerings on Blu-ray, since I love the way that those old black-and-white 1940s and 1950s movies look, and I want to prioritize having more of this genre in my collection. The Maltese Falcon, The Night of the Hunter, The Killing, Kiss Me Deadly, The Big Heat, The Enforcer, Rebecca, Shadow of a Doubt, Spellbound, Notorious, Strangers on a Train, Killer's Kiss, Sweet Smell of Success, and even the noir-edged genre films, like Invasion of the Body Snatchers are favorites of mine in my Blu-ray collection, not to mention the "color noir" films, like Niagara and Leave Her to Heaven, or the international noir titles, like Diabolique. Or the noir-edged vibe of many of my beloved episodes in The Twilight Zone: The Complete Series box set. I'm feeling the need to explore film noir on Blu-ray more extensively, including putting some cash aside to order a big batch of the film noir titles from Olive Films. I'll be making this a priority over other Blu-ray purchases over the next several months. Of course, I'll be delving further into film noir tonight when I watch Melville's Two Men in Manhattan. I have a lot of great "noir-ish" titles on DVD that will hopefully be upgrade at some point. The Third Man, Touchez Pas Au Grisbi, Bob Le Flambeur, Le Doulos, Elevator to the Gallows, Le Deuxieme Souffle, Classe Tous Risques, Rififi, Stray Dog, The Seventh Victim, etc. Of course, Murnau was likely an early influence on some of the above titles with his filmmaking style, even if the genre conventions are different. I have about 100 titles with roughly half of those on Blu-ray. The Blu-ray titles are in no order whatsoever other than I have the DigiPacks all together. The dvd titles are on a seperate shelf and those I have in spine# order.
