I keep my Criterion's separate from all other movies too. Though the Criterion shelf is split in half with Blu and DVD. Though I keep the Kurosawa's in their own little space, and the rest I divide as older to newer films or sometimes foreign territories.

I just finished watching Jean-Pierre Melville's Two Men in Manhattan, and am once again blown away by this director's eye for calculated coolness.

Two Men in Manhattan would make the ultimate double feature with the Criterion title, Sweet a Smell of Success. Both films share beautiful blac-and-white cinematography that brings the glowing street lights, hazy cigarette smoke, and shadowy dives of 1950s New York City to life. Both films also feature scathing observations about news media and responsibility.

This is an understated Melville outing, but it's nonetheless engaging, and it features some of the greatest visuals that I've ever seen on Blu-ray.

I'll write a longer review later.

Pretty cool you have your own little Kurosawa section. It would be cool to separate by director but then I feel I'd have too much time on my hands. Right now the big problem for me is that I'm seriously running out of shelf space from a new IKEA cabinet I bought last year for my growing collection. I'd say about 90% of the cabinet is now filled to capacity and running out fast. I've maximized it by buying additional shelves and creating less height-space for each row. But now space is just about running out.

Wasn't there supposed to be a Criterion of Scanners or is that BS?

Does anybody know if there is chance that Criterion would release A Matter of Life and Death?

Seems like it is the only major film by the Archers missing from the collection.

I have only seen the ones released on blu-ray and at this point any other blu-ray by them will be an instant blind buy for me.

I know that most people dismiss it as an interesting curio or a failed experiment but I like it a lot as well.

Did you get round to watching the conversation between Rosenbaum and Ignatiy.

I never got around to seeing if double member discount was being featured at my "nearby" stores (which aren't nearby enough) on Sunday. Not really enough time to do a road trip, plus I figured I'd just wait and maybe give b2g1 one more shot on Monday with normal member discount...

Just was not meant to be. I got 3 via b2g1 a couple weeks ago, paid little after using gift card (forgot the 5of50 coupon), so didn't miss out altogether. (Also decided to give amazon a chance with the Rossellini/Bergman set, and lucked out with a good copy for a change, a few days ago.)

On to the next sale...

Similar, but I don't get rid of upgraded ones, so the upgrades follow the originals, again organized by spine. Running out of storage space so that may change.

I use the same shelves (the billy corner unit) with the two extra shelves inserted. Have you considered the height extender they sell? (a small unit which screws to the top) My ceiling is too low for it though... =(

I used to organise everything by director (if I had three or more titles by the same director), but I now have seperate sections for Criterion, MoC, BFI, Artificial Eye, then everything else. I group directors together within each section though. I also have a whole unit for horror/exploitation which has a small Arrow section.

The younger kids seem to have inherited the "myth" today from the older generation who were actually there, and...I don't really know why.
I missed Wizards on its initial release and was excited to have the chance to watch it recently. I think it would have been a lot more interesting if I had been in that '70s state of mind, if you know what I mean.

I sure did! I watched it right after I finished the movie and read the booklet. I really enjoyed that supplementary feature.

The movie is Melville's love letter to 1950s New York City and to the American film noir genre. His eye for captivating visuals is spot-on throughout the tribute.

The screenshots in most of the Blu-ray reviews for Two Men in Manhattan focus on faces and close-ups, so the reviews fail to show how splendid the city streets look in the movie.

This is different...

I just read that a local independent theater, the same one that showed the James Bond series this past summer, is showing Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom starting on October 25.

Hmmmm. This may be my big chance to check out this movie without making a blind purchase.

A couple of questions for the Salò fans here...

1. Would I be traumatized for life if I saw this movie on a big screen?

2. Should I join Match.com now and find a beautiful woman to take to this movie for a first date?

I probably won't be able to make it into downtown during that week, but I can kick around the thought, at least.

I hate the CC and MoC spine numbers. Why would I want to organise my film collection in the order that some production company releases them??? Makes no sense. Redemption appear to be doing the same thing.

Personally, I would love it if they dropped the number and replaced it with the directors name or nothing at all.
