Awesome advice. Thanks a million!

I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting The Vanishing tonight. I pray that Criterion will upgrade this one to Blu-ray someday. It's the best Hitchcock film that Hitchcock never made.

As is, however, this was my first time watching The Vanishing DVD on a widescreen HDTV, and the upconvert is not half bad.
That's another film I plan on watching sometime this month. I've only seen it once, but I remember every single thing about that ending.

I'm going to shake the dust off some of my Criterion DVDs during this month of horror, starting tonight with The Vanishing.

Let's get this Halloween party started, y'all!
I might watch some of the Lewton titles. I also want to watch Tourneur's Night of the Demon. It would be a nice addition to the Criterion Collection.

I personally wouldn't take that advice; I know a bunch of Canadians got hit with duties last time. I'd try and keep order to $100 or less.

Not to worry you too much, but I've also had criterion mark the msrp of my orders as the shipment value for customs

Man, it was tough to resist but I broke and ordered Rossellini's War Trilogy! I held off in case of the possibility of the blu ray release! Impulse and impatience got the better of me! Though, I stopped there! I'm still trying to hold onto my funds in anticipation for the Zatoichi boxed set! It seems the Criterion store offers it cheaper than most retailers!

Five upgrades and one new for me. With no tax and free shipping, this betters anything B&N can do.
  • Kuroneko
  • M
  • A Man Escaped
  • Paths of Glory
  • Shock Corridor
  • The Wages of Fear

I smiled when I read this, because I will be revisiting the movies in my Val Lewton set this month as well, in addition to my Night of the Demon DVD. It's now an October tradition for me to go through all of those films. In fact, I almost watched The Cat People tonight instead of kicking the month off with The Vanishing.

I've been one of them.

I think if you're able to get it shipped via DHL, you'll be fine. If they ship via USPS you might be screwed.

The under 100 is a good rule though, and one of these days I'll try and follow it.

The ending really packs a punch.

For me, the most unsettling moment in The Vanishing is when
[Show spoiler]Saskia sees the photo of Lemorne and his children, then decides to get in the car.

I decided to kick the month off with Les Parapluies de Cherbourg. Catherine Deneuve is a screen goddess.

I'm saving most of my horror for the latter half of the month. I've got a couple John Carpenter films I'm going to watch. I'm also excited to revisit Ti West's latest two. I think I'll save Rosemary's Baby for Halloween night. It's a shame I didn't bring any Cronenberg films besides Videodrome up North with me.

Just ordered Things to Come, Lord of the Flies, and Night of the Hunter from the sale. The first two are blind-buys for me. Wanted to buy Seconds as well, but it wasn't available.

I love the films that suggest rather than show. I think it's a tribute to Tourneur that despite the producer's meddling that forced the Demon to be shown in Night that the film is still chilling. Dana Andrews walk through the woods is a brilliant sequence recalling similar ones in The Leopard Man and I Walked With a Zombie. I can't wait for the for day when Lewton's films get upgraded to Blu. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to another of Lewton's directors, Robert Wise, and his The Haunting.

Damn. Sucks to be in Canada.

My Order:

La Haine
Naked
The Earrings of Madame De...
Kid With A Bike

Decided to remove Cries and Whispers DVD at the last minute. Hoping for Criterion to upgrade that to blu in 2014. I forgot to add the Leopard to my order.

God, I hated it. Different squids for different kids.

But to answer The Great Owl's question, I haven't watched it yet (had other stuff to do), but I picked up the recent DigiBook of Halloween today, along with The Little Mermaid. I was convinced the cashier was going to do a double-take when he saw the two titles, but he didn't bat an eye.

The Wages of Fear
The most terrifyingly edge-of-your-seat movie ever made. This is a fact.

My knowledge is lacking on Wages of Fear... Wow is it as good as it was explained there? If so ill buy it right now in the flash sale!

Frankly, I didn't think so. It was a pretty good movie, but I didn't find it as nerve-wracking and involved as I'd been led to believe. Now High & Low by Kurosawa, that was a nail-biter.
