Not my favorite Polanski by a stretch but a well done film.
I saw Pleasence in a film last night I hadn't seen before-Dr. Crippen. He played a weak husband with a wife from hell but somehow he had Samantha Eggar on the side??? Anyway, his wimpy character reminded me of a similar one he played on an episode of The Outer Limits. (and why isn't that series out on Blu ala The Twilight Zone?)

When it started off, I was sure to hate it. It's set up like a play, especially with the staging, but as the film progressed, I really got hooked on it.

It was a very good story and the vibrant colors really helped establish the mood throughout the film.
I had a few people over to watch that several months ago (I'd never seen the 1958 version before). All of us pretty much agreed that the theatricality was a major part of the film's dramatic impact, especially the chanted narration. I found it much more moving than the more realistic remake, which was more depressing but less emotionally involving.

Depressing?! I thought it was very matter-of-fact in its depiction of the Circle of Life, and I loved the depiction of the mother-son relationship, I thought it was very moving. I have not seen the previous film so I can't compare.

Picked up a blu ray copy of Eyes Without a Face today from a local place around here (along with The Haunting) and it looks fantastic!
Dont wanna review it here because I havent had a chance to go through all of it but what I've seen and heard so far is really good, not as bad as some of the other Gaumont releases have been.
Even the documentary on it is very sharp and organic looking.
Definitely something you fans of the film should look forward to. I certainly cant wait to watch the rest of it!

I expect that you'll have your hands full when you review the Zatôichi: The Blind Swordsman box set with all 25 movies. That will probably be a lot of overtime hours with the reviewing, and I'm sure that it will be a relief to go back to the normal Criterion months. Of course, those Zatôichi films look like fun.

Great review! October is such a stacked month - more-so than November, I think.

Amen to that.

Maybe we can get Jeanne Moreau on more Blu-rays. I revisited Elevator to the Gallows last week, and I really hope to see it on Blu-ray someday. I also love her work in Touchez Pas Au Grisbi and The Lovers.

This +1000. This is one of my most wanted upgrades. Such a great movie, and I can't wait to hear the soundtrack in HD.

As I wait for my Blu-ray of Anatomy of a Murder to arrive in the mail, I decided to break out some music...

[Show spoiler]The Go-Betweens - "Lee Remick"

She comes from Ireland
She's very beautiful
I come from Brisbane
I'm quite plain
She's from the mountains, so close to heaven
Clouds on her shoes, stars on her chest

I love Lee Remick, she's a darling

She was in The Omen with Gregory Peck
She got killed, what the heck
Her eyes are like gems
She's an actress for Screen Gems

I love Lee Remick, she's a darling

Her hair's red, but it's not dye
If I touched her, I know I'd want to cry
My life is desperation, but it's only infatuation

I love Lee Remick, she's a darling

Remick is also quite amazing in Experiment in Terror.

Definitely! I found out about The Go-Betweens a couple decades ago, because I am a huge fan of another Australian band, The Church, and I enjoyed a collaboration between the frontman of The Church and the late Grant McLennan.

I had no clue who the song was about until I saw Anatomy of a Murder early last year, though.
