Cool. I'm not into violent films but my main primary interest is Matteo Garrone and doing a film about the Neapolitan mafia, the Camorra. So, my interest is more on the educational side of his filmmaking (which I'm hoping there are awesome special features to learn about shooting the film and what happened afterward).

Ever since I saw this youtube clip. It has always made me think if the violence over there is so frequent that people have become desensitized.

Chilling. On a much lesser note (obviously) I remember as a child in Chicago (1958-1972) being taught to step over the bodies of drunks and bums in the street; not to make eye contact with strangers, etc. 1972, we moved to the south, and everyone waves at you and is sincerely friendly...culture shock. Geographic influence. Another time my son and I are driving through a poor Black neighborhood, I slowed down the car, and the girl walking down the sidewalk hits the deck !?!?!? She thought " drive by " I'm just driving !!!

Seems like Best Buy is starting to ramp up the number of Criterions available at their stores. Before this month, my two local Best Buys were pretty limited in the variety of Criterion BDs (outside of releases like Che, 8 1/2, Yojimbo/Sanjuro and only one or two copies if that). Noticed today that they had multiple copies of all three Criterion BD releases for April and at the somewhat reasonable price of $29.99. While I rarely purchase Criterion BDs for more than $25, this is definitely a welcome development. Maybe it's just my locations, but has anyone else noticed more Criterions at their Best Buys?

Last time I checked, not really. The only place I have seen them is B&N and I think Borders.

It'll be interesting to see if the B&N sale happens next month or June. There's way too much stuff that I want to get at 50% off.

Btw...BN members...hope you use your 15% off coupons by the end of April. [note: It took Vivre sa Vie down to $24.47 and Battleship Potemkin to $21.41]

It's the same at the Best Buy by my place. They had "Summer Hours", "Ride with the Devil" and Vivre sa Vie" for sale (and the standard ones you mentioned). I'm thinking maybe they're seeing some trends that in addition to people picking up the big blockbusters on blu-ray, that the more prestigious titles are what collectors are really going after now.

While I'm kind of a sucker and still pick up a lot of catalog titles on blu (to replace my DVDs), I'm guessing the general public is pretty content with most of their DVDs outside of the new releases coming out.

Really cool article from LA Weekly...

Can you believe it....Belmondo and Karina both in Los Angeles. "Pierrot le fou" heaven!

If any of you meet Belmondo tomorrow night or Karina, would love to hear about your experience.

On a side note...the remake of "La Ronde" (the original Ophuls film from Criterion, remake from Kino) is part of the $9 sale starring Anna Karina and Jane Fonda (pre-Barbarella) and also a few other goodies [note: these are not BD but are DVD but considering Kino's titles are expensive...$9 is a steal].

Can we sticky the Kino thread already? Steamboat Bill Jr is rumored to be a July release and I am tired of looking for the thread.

Martin Scorsese did a good introduction at the beginning. I imagine this is the master they will be using for the Blu releasing on Jul 20

And after reading that thread I'm reminded of why I stopped posting on that site. For as much know it all posturing as that site displays from numerous regular posters its amazing how little they know of the HD world.

As little as 3 months ago I was still arguing with some of the more vocal usual suspects about them claiming they couldn't see a difference between DVD and BD and that old films, particularly B&W, wouldn'y benefit from the boost in resolution.

Its good to see that some of them have come around (Herr Schrek, cough cough) but they sound like newbie posters from this site 3 years ago with their takes on either transfer and which looks better.

Not to mention attacking a gentleman who worked on the Criterion restoration and has access to source elements.

Saw the Summer Hours BD last night...very well done. Well acted and a great story. Three French Criterion releases so far this week, at this rate I won't need subtitles Juliette Binoche had a role with Steve Carell in my hometown with Dan In Real Life. Haven't seen her in awhile since then...

I streamed the HD feed of Summer Hours from Netflix around two weeks ago and was very surprised with the overall quality and lingering feelings it left. The director is very hit or miss for me so I was excited to see him make another film i like enough to own.

I love this quote from Michael Atkinson...

"It’s easy to get anxious about the place of Jean-Luc Godard in our cultural slipstream. He’s held a top-shelf slot of honor that has seemed unassailable for nearly sixty years, but sometimes I fear that his currency is becoming drastically devalued in our always-renovating purgatory of digital 3-D candy corn."

Am I becoming a Godard fan??

EDIT: but then again I just bought Avatar so does that make me conflicted or just a lover of good directors and good films, or am I just anxious about the place of Jean-Luc Godard ??
