I need this boards opinion. I am a big fan of the films of Akira Kurosawa over the last several years. I keep wanting to pull the trigger on the SC Ran Blu but I'm being completely stubborn hoping it hits Criterion. Its currently 12.99, its not the issue of the money per se but wanting to see it the first time with a great video presentation, according to this site's reviewer thats not the case. Am I holding out hope for nothing? If it were to get a better transfer are we likely looking at YEARS?

Thanks in advance....

I loved my Criterion DVD of Ran, but foolishly sold it under the assumption that a Blu-ray was soon forthcoming. It's a marvelous movie with some of the coolest camerawork that I have ever seen, so I'm waiting for a presentation that can give the movie a masterful treatment that it deserves. I've got no problem buying a StudioCanal Blu-ray, but I do not feel any real sense of emergency to purchase their edition of Ran.

I just finished Le Beau Serge.

It's quite a shame that it's one of the most overlooked films in the collection because it's honestly one of the most genuine films that's part of Criterion's catalogue.

Many may consider The 400 Blows or another film to be one of the first French New Wave titles, but this was the one that jump started the entire movement.

If you read the post, I said it was a great, edge-of-your-seat thriller, so the answer is obviously no.

I don't appreciate the personal attack. Be better than that if you're going to tell me your point of view.

Over and out, back to Criterion.

Wow, that's saying a lot. I'm psyched to go see it later this week. I'm not sure how it will compare, but to prep myself / warm up for the event I've been revisiting the classic fare of late - 2001, Solaris, Alien, Aliens, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, War of the Worlds . . . I've been on a sci-fi kick to help enrich the context for viewing Gravity . . . and alas it's distracted from my usual October routine of watching horror flicks.

Yep. Chabrol is a real genius. Have you seen Les Cousins? I liked that one a little better.

I loved that one too. One of the few I've watched again almost straight away after it finished. Far darker than I thought it would be too.

Celebrated French director Patrice Chéreau dies at 68

Patrice Chéreau, a celebrated French theatre director, filmmaker and actor died in Paris on Monday from cancer. He was 68.

Chéreau, who was known as a contemporary Renaissance man, became involved in the arts at a young age. Born in the western French village of Lézigné on November 2, 1944, his father was a painter and his mother a sketch artist. Chéreau grew up mostly in Paris, where he enrolled in the theatre programme of the prestigious secondary school, Lycée Louis-le-Grand, at the age of 16.

Considered a prodigy, Chéreau took on a succession of jobs directing theatre throughout his 20s before entering the world of opera. In 1976, he garnered acclaim as an opera director with his staging of Richard Wagner’s powerful Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany.

Over the course of his bustling career, Chéreau worked with a number of renowned theatre and opera figures, including French playwright, director and filmmaker Roger Planchon. The two men fostered a close relationship, collaborating on a number of projects together over the years.

Chéreau also made his directorial debut in the film industry during the 1970s with “La Chair de l’orchidée,” an adaptation of James Hadley Chase’s 1948 novel by the same name.

His greatest international success in film, however, was the 1994 period piece “Queen Margot”. Starring French actors Isabelle Adjani and Vincent Pérez, the film went on to win the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival that year. It also won five awards at the César Awards, the French version of the Oscars.

It's not in the same league as those films but was I the only one that liked Sunshine by Danny Boyle?? He was influenced by 2001 and Solaris he said.

It's pretty fantastic. I still haven't gotten to my copy of Les Cousins, unfortunately.

Le Beau Serge and Les Cousins intrigue me, but I've had bigger fish to fry lately.

I tend to go through phases. I'm in a film noir mindset right now, and I want to delve into that genre, because I've found that I love the way that those films look on Blu-ray. I'll probably return to the French New Wave territory before long, though, because I never seem to venture a long way from it anyway.

Sans the ending, it's a terrific movie! In fact, it is far and away my favorite Danny Boyle film. It's not sodden by that phony chic humanism that is on full display in 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire.

Scott, I'm glad to read you liked that Chabrol film. While Le Boucher is my favorite, I responded to that film so much when I first saw it as a College Junior.
