Being a "technical" sort of fellow, I should care about this differentiation, but it doesn't really bother me.
The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that even "technically" it's a perfectly legitimate use of the term. Tarkovsky made Lem's novel into a movie, and Soderbergh made it into a movie again, or "remade" it.

Dictionary.com defines "remake" as "1. to make again or anew; 2. Movies. to film again, as a picture or screenplay." Either of these apply to Soderbergh's Solaris.

I really enjoyed it. I wish they'd made the sequel before Paul Bartel died. You have to suspend belief that no cops ever got involved but otherwise it was a great crazy 80's flick.

Ohhhh...I'm not so sure. Seconds is pretty amazing. You don't even have to wear the glasses to watch it, either.

I must've been drowsy when I saw it, but I was surprised that they...ate Raoul. He was the most likeable dude there. Also, call me weird, but I thought Mary Waronov was pretty sexy

How're the extras? I haven't gotten to them yet.

Thumbs up

Watched Medium Cool, and subsequently the 60-minute documentary about it.

The plot was loose and consequently all over the place, but it was clear to me that it wasn't important; it's just framework for the shocking realism that permeates from the protestors and imminent riots in the film. It was just too well done when I watched it, and then I watched the doc, which surprised me in what parts were scripted and which weren't. When they said that iconic line, I was shocked to learn it was dubbed in, even though Wexler really was struck by tear gas.

I come to appreciate the mastery behind the blurring between reality and fiction, even though this film had a real political subtext. Wexler was lucky to capture what's basically a bit of live history in the making. I don't think there's any other film who can pull that off again......except for that asinine Farrelly Brothers movie, Fever Pitch.

It's been a few months since I watched it so I don't recall much on the extras.

“Paris, Texas” has piqued my interest today. I’ve never seen it and for some reason I have always made a mental association with “The Straight Story” - another film I haven’t seen and have not felt inclined to. I try to avoid reading about plots, but did see a few people describe it as poetic, moving, ‘breathtaking images’, etc. Now my mind is telling me “Days of Heaven” or “El Norte,” although the latter may have more to do with the proximity of the films’ release dates.

So please tell… which films are similar in tone to “Paris, Texas?” ..and, of course, I’d be interested to know if people liked it. Thanks!

Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man would be worth a watch, as is any fictional film by Werner Herzog (i.e. Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo). Those filmmakers take the same low-key approach to filmmaking as the Wim Wenders (who did Paris, Texas).

Thanks, Herry. I don't mind Jim Jarmusch so much, but "Dead Man" didn't seem to have a pulse. (seriously, no pun was intended, but I like how that came out) Now I'm thinking like Gus Van Sant... Is that more appropriate when trying to imagine what "Paris, Texas" is like?

If you're thinkin' about My Own Private Idaho, then yea, it's more or less the same atmosphere, although in Paris, Texas's case, it lacks the theatrical homeless.

No, actually when you said "Dead Man", I thought "Last Days" and "Elephant." I think I have a better idea now, though. thanks!

Oh. Paris, Texas isn't really like those films you mentioned, though.

But hey, if you know where to go, then no probs.

We simply do not see eye to eye on this: I find little low key about those two films. They are really as epic in scope as they come, especially the magnificent Fitzcarraldo. Nevertheless, good is good. I am pleased that you endorsed three very fine filmmakers

I saw it in the 80's with some friends, I don't even remember how we came to it and it was a blast, one of those comedies where at least I know I am guarantee to laugh always, the one liners are hilarious, I am to check all the suplements.

I got my copy today of Howards End, and was reading to the booklet essay and I think ( not sure ) there's a mistake, it is mention than Emma Thompson character met Vanessa Redgrave character ( sorry don't remember the names now ) "met the previous spring at howards end" when I think it is mentioned in the film that they met while in a trip to germany, in fact Emma thompson first time to howards end was after she married Antony Hopkins. Bad bad Criterion essay! ( Doris ... THE DOMINATRIX )

I guess we do, because when you think "scope", I think "tone".

Paris, Texas can be pretty epic in your regard on certain key scenes.

I can't wait to see how blu-ray.com handles the reviews for the Zatoichi set. I'm hoping there will be reviews for each and every movie or disc.
