I am. I'm hoping it gets a release soon. Curious to see what he can do with that budget. It's always interesting when a critic goes to the director's chair.
Agreed on all fronts. The best feature debut I saw this year was by a former critic (Neighboring Sounds).

I decided to revisit my Blu-ray of The Night of the Hunter earlier tonight. I love this movie, and I never seem to tire of it. It's such an odd slice of Americana with powerful and symbolic visuals all the way through.

A lot of these older noir-edged films are not Halloween movies, per se, but the visuals are eternally haunting.

Hey Criterion fans, I just read that Kumar Pallana (known for his various roles in the films of Wes Anderson) has passed away. Sad news.

I'd say that award goes to Brink of Life.

When someone with the username "The Great Owl" feels uneasy while watching a movie about talking animals, that's not awesome.

In all fairness, I did not have an outright dislike for the film, and I actually enjoyed the sheer offbeat randomness of the whole affair, but it was quite abnormal like nothing I've watched before. On the other hand, a wise man once said that life begins at the end of your comfort zone.
I cannot even begin to tell you how I felt during/after I watched Black Moon. It wasn't a life-changing experience, but it was a very bizarre experience. I really thought the premise of the film was so interesting but fortunately I rented the film from the library first. And now, even though I dismissed the film entirely at the time, I am probably going to end up buying this on Blu-ray during the November sale. It's just too bizarre not to own, and I'm attracted to the bizarre, as un-re-watchable as it may be. So good for you with the fetal position...fortunately I didn't have nightmares though here.

The man always had big ideas, but the real kicker is that he consistently followed it up with very effective execution.
Andre is quite a man... now I wonder if he played himself in that film or some of the dialogue was written for/with him by Malle. Whatever the case is, its amazing cinema. It's as if someone put a few cameras in a restaurant and filmed 2 guys talking a normal conversation...and the conversation REVEALED itself over the course of the evening. Revelations and evolutions indeed. I can get into that far more than you think. Malle has the mind that I can relate to. He is one director that I am starting to adore more and more now for the unconventional films he makes almost along the lines of an earlier incarnation of Lars Von Trier.

Quick question all... I picked up Three Colors a few weeks ago, so I'm guessing that the White disc is the corrected one, right? I just haven't had a chance to pop it in and sit down to watch it yet... (wife's got me doing cores ) Besides popping it in and listening for the track issue, can you tell by dics ID number? Thanks all!

Hoping to sit down soon and watch the 19 or so films I've purchased over the last 2 months... Fingers crossed.

My corrected copy of White has "Second Printing" on the disc by the run time.

I just saw the setlist for last night's Cure concert, and I am quite envious. 41 songs...woo hoo! The Cure have played 3+ hour shows almost every time I've seen them. They know how to treat their fans well.

...and I just woke up. I was really surprised myself, Owl! Of course the audience went gaga over the mega hits (especially during the final encore), but I was in my zone when they played Plainsong and Disintigration. Sure, The Cure is essentially a "greatest hits band" with all the limitations that that entails (Robert Smith is not a very good lyricist for one, nor has their latest material been very good), but they do give it all they've got in their shows. It was totally worth it!

Excellent view! Since The Cure is my all-time favorite band, I'm a big fan of the deep cut album tracks and obscure B-sides along with the hits. Last night's setlist had some obscure songs ("Stop Dead", a B-side, for example.) that the band had not played in decades. It's fun to see Robert Smith keeping things interesting by resurrecting unlikely songs, because most longtime bands stick to the same 15-20 "greatest hits" songs during every tour.
