Paramount probably kept the rights because they later remade MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK, albeit heavily rewritten for Jerry Lewis, as ROCK-A-BYE-BABY, a reasonably entertaining Frank Tashlin film in its own right that still doesn't quite match the sustained hilarity of MORGAN'S CREEK (but is at least available on a nice Blu-ray from Olive). It would be great to see more Sturges on Blu-ray, and MIRACLE would be in the top three, right after SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS and HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO, the latter of which I was lucky enough to see for the first time on 35mm with Eddie Bracken in the audience!

Anybody receive an opened/ unwrapped Blu-ray from B&N? My copy of The Spy who came in from the cold arrived without packaging, and the blue sticker was on the plastic case. Very weird....

Quick question. Why is The 400 blows over $40 on amazon ($45.99)? Is it out of print?

There were rumors going around lately that it was going OOP -- possibly because of a(n also rumored) upcoming release of a Blu-ray edition of the Adventures of Antoine Doinel set -- along with Godard's Breathless.

It looks as if the rumors were because the pages for those titles at criterionforum.org (not Criterion's official site) show them as being OOP. But there's no indication that they actually are -- or will be in the foreseeable future -- Criterion's own site does not list them as OOP.

So it looks like the Amazon Marketplace seller offer the disc at that price is trying to capitalize on the rumors.

Arrow are releasing it in the UK in 2014 as part of their Academy line, so Universal either have, or are preparing an HD Transfer for blu-ray. So it's certainly a possibility.

I recently received my copy of Secret Sunshine still in shrinkwrap, HOWEVER, the blue sticker was also on the plastic case. I always thought that the sticker should be placed on top of the shrinkwrap, so this is a bit unusual. Hopefully, this wasn't re-packaged.

Who am I kidding? They'll still whine.
I just received the Japanese releases of Eraserhead and Mulholland Dr., which means Criterion can announce them now. . Got tired of waiting. Also picked up Lost Highway, The Straight Story, and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me on BD. The Japanese discs are region free and all but MD are part of Amazon JP's 2 for 3,000 yen promotion.
Wild at Heart and The Elephant Man are eligible titles for the deal as well.

I had never seen The Straight Story - it's a terrific film. It might not be as rewatchable as some of Lynch's other films, but I'm glad to own it.

My case for Sanjuro arrived with a big crack, but I don't care. The disc plays perfectly.

I too hope for such an announcement, along with Polanski, Melville and Mann.

Only three more days.

The Wexner Center doesn't appear to be showing Fantastic Mr. Fox, but its director could easily be part of the company's history, considering what has already released by the company.

Here's a pitcher of Kool-Aid:
With its unparalleled library of world classics and critically acclaimed contemporary films, exquisitely designed packaging, and demanding technical standards, the Criterion Collection remains the Tiffany's of important releases on home video.
By googling "wexner criterion" (without the quotes) you can see that this isn't the first Wexner/Criterion event.

They hinted at Oshima's BOY earlier in the year so hope that gets announced soon. Even another Oshima Eclipse set would be fantastic.

They are not showing it, but they are definitely discussing it:

"Join Criterion Collection President Peter Becker and Producer Kim Hendrickson as they share the compelling history of the company and provide a behind-the-scenes look at Criterion's operation, focusing on recent and upcoming releases such as Noah Baumbach’s Frances Ha (2013), Robert Altman’s Nashville (1975), Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), and Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights (1931), among others. Following the talk, stick around for a 35 mm screening of City Lights, perhaps Chaplin’s greatest achievement, which follows the iconic Tramp as he falls in love with a blind flower girl. (87 mins., 35 mm)"
