its a really "slow" movie. but i liked it in the end. would be nice if criterion (or any other label like kino maybe) would release peppermind candy or oasis / green fish.

still have to get "peotry" but im not sure if i should get the UK or the KINO release..

The 1st I think...or at least in that first week, definitely.

Very long overdue indeed, and I can't wait to get the blu ray when it finally does get a release. However whilst on the subject, when did Criterion ever actually officially announce that they acquired the rights to release Thief on their label?

That was my thought process as well. Seems strange IFC has been so quiet about a home video release unless they were working with Criterion. While the film has received some acclaim, I still feel like it has slipped by a lot of people and a Criterion release would definitely rectify that.

Default Turner Classic Movies on-demand

Last night, I decided to check out the current free Turner Classic Movies that were "on demand." I was pleased to find an impressive listing of films including:

In a Lonely Place (Nicholas Ray)
Los Olvidados (Luis Bunuel)
Pather Panchali (Satyajit Ray)
Horror of Dracula (Terrence Fisher)
All That Heaven Allows (Douglas Sirk)

I decided to watch In a Lonely Place since it was going to expire today. Tonight, I will watch Los Olvidados! Oh boy!!!

In a Lonely Place is far and away Bogie's best performance. I've seen the film twice and I'm just astonished by the nuance and intensity.

It's a fantastic film. Seems ripe for a Criterion release.

In A Lonely Place has been one of my most wanted titles since I started buying Criterion movies. All of this discussion has inspired me to change my avatar back to the image I used a couple of years ago. Bye for now, Laura Palmer.

I want In a Lonely Place to be released on Blu-ray as soon as possible, and preferably by Criterion.
I'm immensely pleased that The Big Sleep is finally receiving some Blu-ray treatment, albeit with a different studio.

I've been enthused about film noir lately, because I've found that I love the way that these movies look on in high definition on Blu-ray. After getting my paycheck yesterday, I placed the single most expensive Blu-ray order that I have ever placed before by shelling out $200, including shipping, to ImportCDs.
Here is that order...

Film Noir Collection (Union Station / Appointment with Danger / Dark City / Rope of Sand)
The Big Combo
A Double Life
Plunder Road
Crashout
Force of Evil
Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye
Cry Vengeance
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)
Panic in the Streets
Scarlet Street

A few days back, I ordered Laura and Sunset Boulevard from Amazon, since the movies were $25 together, so I'll be spending quite a bit of time immersing myself in film noir in the weeks to come.

(This is why Eyes Without a Face will likely be the only Criterion title that I purchase this month.)

I've loved the film noir titles on Criterion (The Killing, Night of the Hunter, Kiss Me Deadly, Ministry of Fear, On the Waterfront, Sweet Smell of Success, and my Criterion DVD of The Third Man).

This is obviously a bit of a cliche but it really can be like seeing them for the first time again. And sure, that can be true of any really good transfer but noir really does seem to get some extra bump.

I never understood why everyone is in love with "In a Lonely Place". Eddie Muller on TCM called it his favorite film noir. It doesn't rank anywhere close in my top film noirs. You can't beat "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" for Bogart's best role either.

Honestly surprised that there isn't a thread dedicated to the genre on here yet with films that have been released/will be released and wish lists/general conversation.

Anyone can correct if i'm wrong though. I do apologize.

A lot of the black-and-white films from the late 1940s and the 1950s still look sharp, and high definition really brings out the best with the shadows, the street lamps, and the cigarette smoke.

The Criterion Blu-ray of Sweet Smell of Success is a force of nature, and it really transports me into that setting. Two Men in Manhattan, Melville's 1959 love letter to film noir, displays New York City with a similar brilliance.

I've searched around by looking up the "Film Noir" genre on this site. It's tricky, since the definition of film noir itself is not an exact science, but there are a lot of titles out there. Blu-ray.com lists the neo-noir films in addition to the film noir selections, though, so you'll see several listings of the Christopher Nolan Batman movies and such. I limit my search to the 1940s and 1950s.

Olive Films is a wonderful studio for releasing film noir Blu-rays. The Enforcer is an incredible Blu-ray, and I have it placed alongside all of my other Bogart titles. Olive Films also features some noir-esque titles not necessarily attributed to the genre, such as the 1956 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

It's no The Maltese Falcon or Double Indemnity but it gets awfully close at times. In fact, it's an interesting compare/contrast with The Maltese Falcon that shows just how subtle the line between 'really good' and 'great' can sometimes be.

I wouldn't put it in my top five but I wouldn't argue with anybody who does.

(it might make my top ten though...it would depend on my mood that day)

One of the real benefits fo this generation of home video is the people doing the transfers aren't as terrified of 'crushing' blacks and 'losing' detail as broadcasters used to be. I grew up watching black and white TV which was usually more along the lines of grey-and-darker grey TV.

And I don't blame them, either. If I were in their positions thirty or forty years ago I probably would have fiddled with the contrast knobs too.

But this is better

I'm not so sure about that, Owl. Granted: Pursued, Force of Evil, etcetera. are great, but they've released a bunch of duds too. The only film I genuinely like in the film noir set is Rope of Sand, for example.
