Hi Old Geezer,

Alphaville is a good movie but the reason I put at the #3 is that it was an early Criterion Collection release that came with no special features unlike the other two. But no matter which order, more than likely you are going to buy all Godard. Maybe "Tout va Bien" may not be your thing but for the most part, your near getting all the Godard Criterion releases.

I also recommend checking out the Godard books out there too if you become a big fan of his work.

I felt the same about the film but I felt that Martine Carol (although she did a good job performance-wise), look-wise was not the right role for Lola Montes. I believe Roger Ebert also mentioned something similar in his review.

so for Godard, it's extremely hard to see a 'complete filmography' so to speak because there are way too many films in his canon =) plus he's still alive.
Has anyone seen the 49-disc Godard set for $99.00 on eBay? HK release...and it has some hard to get films, although some don't have English subtitles which is a bummer.

Anybody know if Criterion still has the rights to The Lady Vanishes, The 39 Steps or Rebecca, Notorious or Spellbound, or any other Hitchcock classic? I would love to see Criterion release some Hitchcock classics on blu.

We definitely need more Hitchcock on blu-ray...........from anyone!

To my count only NxNW and 39 Steps (bad transfer) are on blu-ray.

Universal needs to get in gear and release their masterpiece collection on blu-ray!

I was lucky enough to pick up the Wrong Men and Notorious Women box set a couple months ago. I had already seen Rebecca, Notorious and Spellbound (Notorious being my favorite Hitchcock next to Shadow of a Doubt and Vertigo). I just watched the Lady Vanishes last night and it was good, just not quite on par with his US films. I look forward to seeing The 39 Steps soon!
Wasn't there some rumor going around that Criterion was going to maybe gain the rights to Foreign Correspondent?

Yes, as part of the Castle Hill deal that brought them Stagecoach, and presumably To Be or Not To Be (1942).

They showed many Hitchcock classics on HD Net Movies about 2 years ago and they looked fantastic!! Especially Virtigo! (probably his most visually stunning color movie). I would think they will be coming to blu soon! Would love to see Rebecca and Notorious as well (probably my 2 fav hitch films).

Btw, to keep it criterion related, I have three criterion blu rays: The Third Man, The Seventh Seal, and The 400 Blows. I love them all!! At the time that i bought them, I didnt realize that they are part of such an elite collection of blu ray films! Now that i've discovered this thread you guys have got me feinding for more! I'm thinking about getting the Yojimbo/Sanjuro box set next (love Kurosawa but have not seen these). Any recomendations? I have not seen many of these films.

I really want to see this movie! Should be interesting to see Germany before WWII . I wonder why Amazon is not applying its standard 30% off MSRP to Criterion titles?

Hunger dropped to $26.99 on Amazon....... figured people would scoff at it in the Hot-Deals forum, but perhaps some people here holding out may be interested.....

As with all films - particularly Criterion - your mileage may vary.

Thanks to Netflix, I've seen almost every Criterion film that I don't own. There are some I love and some I don't like, but I respect. Even the ones worth poo-pooing I understand (like The Rock and Armageddon). I would never recommend those films, but I understand their place to finance good movies.

Walkabout was the only film that just never resonated with me at all. I didn't dislike it. It simply never took me away.

I won't lie, as snobby as I am. I can sometimes allow myself to be swept up in something like "Cutthroat Island" if I can get swept up in it's world.

Walkabout failed to bring me in that way. But that's only me. Perhaps I owe it a second viewing.

This is what makes movies to darned appealing to me. In my youth I loved action movies (still do) but when I saw "Walkabout" by chance one evening on tv, I was blown away by it. Maybe because it was something entirely different from what I had been used to viewing. But I never missed a chance to see it again whenever it was on tv. This is a day one buy for me. I found their journey and growth in maturity to be fascinating. Compare the aborigines (sp?) and "Modern" civilization and decide for yourself who the real savages are.

Awesome! I shall check it again. Please consider that I am a huge fan of many films like Walkabout.

I can't believe I crashed and did it, but I went ahead and purchased a DVD only release for THE FUGITIVE KIND. I really wish it were a blu release but it is out of the consumers hands.

Already got a copy of Ride with the Devil Sunday at a local Best Buy.

Default Canadian Pre-order Price Reduction for "M"

My fellow Canadian Criterion fans:

"M" - Fritz Lang's classic, and first sound movie, is coming out May 11th as we all know.

I just picked it up as a pre-order on AMZ CA for $27.63 CDN, compared to AMZ $36.49 USD.
I do not know how long this will last!?

Hopefully an AMZ price reduction is coming shortly...

I'm going to try to snag this from Best Buy a week early. They might have it for $29.
