Idiotic ending on Notorious? Are you perhaps thinking of Suspicion instead?

Guys, I know it may not be the best time to post this, but here's a really interesting interview with Oliver Stone:

Here's to hoping Talk Radio or Salvador gets released by CC

I've only seen it in SD, so I can't wait to check out my TCM recording.

Btw, I highly reccomend Jonathan Rosenbaum's writings on Antonioni.

StudioCanal owns the rest of his British films, including Blackmail.
Have they gone back into copyright? Here in the US at least, everything up through The Lady Vanishes had been in the Public Domain for the last 20 years or so. That's why they were released and re-released on DVD from several of the P.D. labels (Laserlight, Whirlwind, Passport, et alia) virtually simultaneously.

Or is it just that ITV has access to whatever is closest to the camera negative? Back in 2007, Lionsgate put out a 3-disc set of The Ring, The Manxman, Murder!, The Skin Game, and Rich and Strange sourced from StudioCanal, with the films looking better than I'd ever seen them before.

The ability to see these older films like this is why I'm in love w/ the format.
Keeping it in the family, Bigger Than Life is absolutely gorgeous. And as an added bonus, Ray did a lot of really interesting noirish things with light and shadows that one doesn't usually see in technicolor (or DeLuxe or whatever it was) films. I haven't seen these yet but The Blob and Gates of Hell were pretty highly praised in the reviews here.

Stepping out, there are a lot of good to very good transfers from that era but Fantastic P...argh...Forbidden Planet and A Star is Born are two real standouts. Ben-hur is pretty spectacular too but the color in Forbidden Planet is really, really good.

It was my first Antonioni.

Also, my TCM recording was in SD, as well, so I don't think it's anything gained or lost.

I was a little bewildered with the ending, but after reading about it, it's quite chilling. I loved the pianist's song in the movie. Made me feel so good about myself.

Really looking forward to checking out L'Avventura, Blow-Up, La Notte, and Red Desert.

It's not a bad movie, and it's actually more interesting than one would think, given the premise, but I was still left disappointed. My childhood imagination had built up so many wondrously destructive possibilities after seeing that TV trailer, and there was simply no way that the movie could have delivered.
Q is a silly movie made watchable by Michael Moriarty being totally batsh|t crazy. Another wacky-as-hell, but enjoyable Larry Cohen movie starring Moriarty is The Stuff. The fake commercials alone are worth it, especially the post-credits one (if, like me, one had a thing for Brooke Adams).

Here's a fun thought, along the same lines...

How awesomely awesome would it be if Criterion were to announce Dragonslayer (1981) today?
(There is a zero percent chance of this happening, but let me at least enjoy the thought for a few hours, y'all.)
Yes, that would be awesome, though the chance of it happening isn't actually zero, since neither Disney nor Paramount are adverse to licensing to Criterion. It's certainly not likely, though.

(Well, there might be zero percent chance of them announcing it today, but it's possible -- if remotely -- that it could happen in the future.)

I'd imagine the situation is they're still in the public domain, with restoration work being licensed from the respective companies. Of the public domain early Hitch releases the Lionsgate/StudioCanal releases are tops. Hithcock's silents have recently been restored by the British Film Institute, and the rumors are strong that at least some of those will be released under the Criterion aegis stateside.

As for the work on the major films from the thriller sextet that Criterion has released - The Man Who Knew Too Much, The 39 Steps, and The Lady Vanishes - the first was done by the BFI, and the other two by ITV. I'd imagine the other three have had (recent) transfers too, as they are/were on the Criterion Hulu+ page.

I recorded the one that aired on 1790. Should be HD.

That string of movies is, in my eyes, the most impressive streak in cinematic history.

In addition to the Hitchcock greats, here are a few 1950s color films that stand out lovingly on Blu-ray...

Niagara (This movie wins the Gold Star when it comes to 1950s color splendor on Blu-ray.)
The Blob
Bigger than Life
The Searchers
The African Queen
The Quiet Man
River of No Return
Forbidden Planet
The Fly

The Marilyn Monroe fans will back me up on my glowing recommendation for Niagara. It's probably one of the top five Blu-ray transfers that I've ever seen.

Not to confuse you even more after others have already replied with their picks, but here are mine:

Charade - have a soft spot for this film as my wife will ONLY watch older films. This was one of the first films we watched when we started dating and, being a HUGE fan of Hitchcock, loved it!

Anatomy of a Murder - Just for Cary Grant in a different kind of role alone, plus this is a smartly executed, fast-paced courtroom drama.

Seconds - One of the first films (along with Following) I had seen that I thought should get the Criterion treatment back in the 90's when I was able to find a DVD copy.

The Qatsi Trilogy - Amazing set of films. The soundtracks are incredible, with visuals to match! Plus, why get one when you can have three!

And finally, Shock Corridor - I saw this a while back, when I first picked it up on BD, and greatly enjoyed it...as I know you will.

NOT:

Brazil - IMO, very overrated and very dated for a fantasy/sci-fi film
Salo - Nuff said

MAYBE:

Eyes without a face - I am considering this myself but have never seen it.
Godzila - Same as above
Anotomy of a Murder - Same as above

YES:
