Yeah, wondered about what he'd be looking for...

Closest comparable Kurosawa would be Ran, right.

You know, being that I have zero interest in DVDs nowadays, you can count me in as well for being slightly irked by the added presence/weight of the DVDs. But I already have accepted Criterion's decision on this. I just wish they could stop releasing DVDs altogether and switch entirely to Blu-ray. For those people who don't own a Blu-ray player yet, well, if they have $40, they can buy one today (plus it plays all of their old DVDs too).

You really should shell out for the Miami Vice TV series at some point.

Michael Mann produced that series, and the first episodes in 1984 already looked better than most movies at the time. None of us had ever seen anything like it on television, as far as visuals are concerned.

Could it have been MGM-HD?

It pops up there pretty regularly. In fact, I think it's coming up in the next week or two.

I am beyond psyched man.

I can't wait to see how well-edited/directed his very first film is. I can't wait to hear this Tangerine Dream soundtrack too! Holy molys.

Nice
Not just the weight (It truly does blow maxing out the load capacity of your Blu-ray cabinet), but the thickness of the case. Some of us do not have the space to house a double wide release. That said, I am thankful nonetheless for the announcement, so you can just file this under #FirstWorldProblems.

Throne of Blood! I'll take it!
Now hopefully it won't be another whole year and change before the next Kurosawa release.

I can't tell you how much I will treasure the release. Mann-marathon at my Mann-cave!!! I just won't invite my brother because he thought Thief's soundtrack was so cheezy that it brought him out of the movie.
Mann, that sounds fun.

In celebration of Michael Mann's Thief being released on the Criterion Collection, what are your 5 favorite Mann films?

For me:

1. Miami Vice
2. Thief
3. Heat
4. Collateral
5. The Insider

I like the idea of a "heist" triple-feature. But I think I would do THIEF, RIFIFI and then BIG DEAL ON MADONNA STREET to cap with a straight-faced parody of the genre. (BIG DEAL... is one I would very much like an upgrade of at some point.)

for those who haven't seen Thief and are asking what it's like...
James Caan, simply put, plays quite the bada$$. I can also tell you that Nicolas Winding Refn aped a lot of it for Drive. See the attachment. (Sorry, couldn't figure out how to insert the image.. I'm a newbie still.)

I will be getting on streaming this November, so Miami Vice will be one of the first things I will see.

The soundtrack is a winner, but then again, I have a penchant for synths...my family hates this type of music, but they are gonna have to get used to it come January. Thief on repeat, y'all!

Man, that is one kickass movie poster for Thief! Wish Criterion used that instead.

p.s. I was able to display your picture the way you intended.

Are you kidding...the rest of the first world problems laugh about us behind our backs. We're only slightly ahead of 'I need more headrest displays so my kids won't argue about which movie to watch in the car' but between tablets and phones and whatnot I think that one's gonna get bumped soon.

It's probably my fault since I was expecting so much from them after Nashville, but I'm really disappointed by the announcements. They don't do much for me. That being said, I'm glad people are getting what they want. I definitely plan on picking up Thief and IAMMW. Although it kind of pisses me off that I just recently purchased IAMMV and I thought it was great in the A/V department...sigh. Why can't they license something new, that hasn't been released before? They clearly have deals with MGM, so why can't they license some noirs like great Crimes of Passion?
It is what it is....
