I'm going to be up to my neck in film noir titles over the next few months. This is a great thing, of course!

As such, seeing a classic film noir (Rififi) and a neo-noir (Thief) in the lineup is just awesome.

I know that I'm going on and on about this, but still...

Awesome list, Abdrewes!

I would have Public Enemies in my list if I didn't love Collateral so much.

Huge fan of synths as well, kind of off topic but do you love the opening scene in Drive? Sure it copies Thief a bit but man do we need more synth soundtracks.

Nothing cooler than that 80s neon feel.....

The soundtrack for Claire Denis' latest Bastards has just been released and it has some excellent dark synth tracks.

Belive it or not, I've never seen Drive yet. I know, I know, I must be mad or something. Will check it out one of these days, esp. now that you say there is synth in there. Dang.

I'm a syntheholic.

I saw it for the neon feeling of LA alone, it isn't the greatest film ever but it definitely has style. It can't match Mann's style in his filmography but it is definitely one moody picture.

I've not yet seen Thief, but it's one of those movies I've been wanting to buy lately, due to fanfare. However, the old DVD on Amazon did not look too appealing. Glad I held off!

I don't think this is going to be a popular opinion, but for my money, the opening sequence to Drive is just about the most intense and perhaps the coolest (a la the coolness oozing from Thief) 7 minutes of cinema in a long time. We all spend a lot of time talking about classic films here, but not much beats
[Show spoiler]the sound of the police helicopter exiting the scene through my left rear speakers or the sound of Gosling's engine racing coming out of a dead stop at the traffic light. the accompanying score gets my heart racing even though I've seen that opening probably 10 times. ..and then it's all capped off with the Kavinsky song "Nightcall"... oh, "and the Clippers win the game!"

absolute perfection.. I don't care who or from where he borrowed from

Synth junkie here as well. Pop, Gloom, however they are used I am there. Watched Witness last night and that soundtrack by Jarre really made me miss that point in time.

Great list...we have the same movies in the same order instead of #4. I just thought The Last of the Mohicans is an amazing film with the production design and ambition.

I consider Heat to be one of the greatest films of all time, not just for the director, but in general. I wrote a 15-20 page college essay on this film and how it deals with the issue of masculinity. I have it here if you want read.
