Brazil appears to be getting very mixed reactions, yet I hear it's one of the greatest films ever. What's the deal with Paris, Texas? I get the feeling that it's a beautifully filmed, emotional journey.

I'm over the moon to see that The Long Day Closes is finally making its way to Blu-Ray. It's my favourite British film from the latter half of the 20th century (or at the very least tied with Ken Russell's The Devils). It's a masterpiece - poignant and poetic in the way it depicts the joy of living and growing up in post-war Liverpool despite the harshness of everyday life. Criterion's got 2014 off to a very promising start indeed.

Paris Texas is actually a pretty accessible film I have found. It is pretty emotional and is in some ways about mistakes made in the past and trying to live with them but it is also a road trip and a bonding film between father and on. |

Still no sign of Polanski's restored Tess, which most of Europe got on BD last year and Criterion apparently controls

We shouldn't have to though. 5 discs, 3 of them DVDs, is insane. Of course not as insane as that Zatoichi set, where out of 27 discs half are presumably coasters for most people, one way or the other.
I wonder what the true reason for the switch to dual-format was. I'm certainly not a fan. |
