Dual-format packaging is extremely convenient for me. They don't often cost that much more...and in the case of Criterions they aren't costing more at all...and it gives me options. If I want to watch CITY LIGHTS at home, I watch the blu-ray. If I want to take a movie over to my Mom's or a friend's place, I can take the DVD...because they don't all have blu-ray. I can also loan the DVDs out and still have my movie in my collection to watch. Why complain about something that really does little detriment to you when it opens up doors for others?

I'm not gonna lie - it's probably my favorite French New Wave film out of everything I have seen from that er Great acting and story all around.

I too watched it on TCM an was not aware of a color introduction.

Cleo is one of my favorite films - a sort of New Wave version of Before Sunrise. It's playing as one of the featured films at this year's AFI Fest. Agnes Varda is the guest of honor/artistic director. Cleo is the image on all the posters currently around LA.

[Show spoiler]

I'm hoping that means there's a new restoration that will be shown, and maybe result in a Criterion BD soon

Thank goodness the longer version of Mad Mad World will be released. the closest thing to this I have is the letterboxed laserdisc version.

Just got home...Throne of Blood

So glad they didn't change the cover either, it's awesome already. I'm glad to see Rififi too. I heard great things about it, and the UK release has been on my radar.

a very interesting and eclectic month. wish the ray's were blus (but still a pickup nonetheless) and I am so excited for more high def Kaurismaki! He's tops.

Love that Thief cover art. Smooth.

Nice to also see Rififi.

Default I Married a Witch

This has always been a fave of mine and I was delighted when Criterion announced the release. It looks good, but I'm surprised that Criterion went with this film, since the elements are less than optimal. There is considerable flickering and some print damage. The BD.com review seems to gloss over this a bit. Still glad I have it though.

I wonder what the true reason for the switch to dual-format was. I'm certainly not a fan.

I have yet to see "Thief".
It'll be a safe blind buy, I have always loved the film but I held off on buying it until the Blu came out. So happy I waited!

Just the tarot/credits sequence. I have to plead ignorance about Agnes Varda until I saw the segment about her on The Story of Film and then saw this. I pretty much thought the New Wave was an all-male club. Terrific film.

Same here. Speaking of waiting, I'm trying really hard to resist the temptation to buy Blow Up, L'Eclisse & L'Avventura.

I don't own Blow Up either...what do you think the chances of that one are? I'd say they're less than the latter two.

It was my first Varda and I didn't know how I would like her films, but it's fantastic.

I'm finally reading the news report and reading this was music to my ears:

Quote:
Finding hypnotic beauty in neon and rain-slick streets, sparks and steel, Thief effortlessly established the moody stylishness and tactile approach to action that would define such later iconic entertainments from Mann as Miami Vice, Manhunter, and Heat.

I cannot wait to hear that commentary track. Mann's commentaries are pure gold.

You don't even need to be region free. There is a Region A blu with English subtitles.

Holy crap! That is starting the new year with a BANG.

Something there for everyone, surely. In a way, I'm most excited for THE LONG DAY CLOSES, which I really wasn't expecting. Many of you may not know this film or its director, Terence Davies, but he's pretty much the nearest thing we have to Terence Malick, and this is his TREE OF LIFE.

If that appeals, consider giving it a try. It'll look gorgeous in HD.

I'm excited for The Long Day Closes as well. I'd have preferred Distant Voices, Still Lives but this is as good. Hopefully, we might get Distant Voices another month (from someone!)

The reason is simple. They cut overhead of producing alternative DVD packaging (and the packaging is the biggest cost in disc reproduction) and give people who still own DVD only (and there are millions) the option of having copies they can watch. It also helps DVD only watchers adapt to blu-ray by giving them the discs should they decide to upgrade their format.

Actually if I hadn't bought the Essential Art House DVDs, Ikiru would be my #1 choice for sure and Hidden Fortress would be #3 after TBSW. But god there are so many... I also particularly love Drunken Angel and Dodes'ka-den... and I'd love to blind-buy The Lower Depths or Madadayo or some of the others not already in the collection... Ack! Maybe by 2020 or 2030...
