Not just with the Blu-rays, but also with the occasional books (the new Stephen King novel that I bought last month, for example), Christmas gifts for my nieces, and such. Also, I usually try to avoid processed sugary foods, but I've had a few moments of weakness this year and have occasionally purchased an M&M brownie or a slice of pumpkin cheesecake from the coffee shop inside the store (These things are discounted as well.).

However, I'd like to think that I won't use the Barnes & Noble membership quite as much in 2014.

Throughout 2013, I've had an enthusiasm level of 10 when it comes to building my Blu-ray collection. For 2014, I'd like to dial that down to a seven.

What are the chances that Criterion will release Fellini's Nights of Cabiria?

It's probably just a matter of time before Criterion upgrades Nights of Cabiria to Blu-ray.

I want them to upgrade I Vitelloni first, though. That's my favorite Fellini film.

the point of my post was just to say what the break even point would be in terms of Criterion films as the unit. ..and also to say that I find Amazon and Half.com have deals year round and they don't require a membership.
And no one at this forum is in the habit of buying "even more"!

I still think it's worth it if you're buying enough. The last 40% sale I bought two box sets and one Criterion, and the amount I saved was already more than the cost of the membership.

That or Juliet of the Spirits should be the next Fellini upgrade I would think.

Damn. Revisiting Carrie has got me pining for another Brian DePalma Criterion release.

I'd be a B&N member in a heartbeat except for one small problem-NO STORE HERE! So the real benefit of the 10% off doesn't apply and I always order more than $50 so the free shipping comes automatically.

I'll be going to see the new adaptation at the theater this weekend. That will make 11 new movies that I've seen in 2013. I'm really on a roll, y'all.

Nights of Cabiria is oop. Did Criterion lose the rights? I love my ancient dvd but would welcome, of course, an upgrade.
I'm at the thought of Juliet of the Spirits on Blu. That was my first Fellini film and talk about a visual assault. I saw it in a theater so, of course, it would qualify as felony assault. These would make a great Masina double bill. I also like her in a lesser known Fellini-Ginger and Fred.

Is it? The DVD has been out of print for a while. Figured they lost the rights, or I'd assume it would still be available.

EDIT: Yep, don't expect it from Criterion. StudioCanal owns the rights now.

Nothing tingles my fanny on the January titles,

I am very curious about Rififi, does someone has a review or some thoughts on it?

It's a mad mad world I rented last month in preparations for if it was announced make a choice and is a definite no for me, I had a some huge cracks laughing during the movie, but dear lord, the movie dragged way to much for a comedy with this plot.

Jonathan Rosenbaum:

Quote:
It’s one of the enduring mysteries of the Hollywood blacklist that directors such as Joseph Losey and Cy Endfield had to hide behind fronts or pseudonyms, whereas Jules Dassin was able to direct this atmospheric 1955 French thriller under his own name and still get it shown in the U.S., where it was something of an art-house hit. (Oddly, as a cast member he uses the name Perlo Vita.) Shot in Paris and its environs and adapted from an Auguste le Breton novel with the author’s assistance, this is a familiar but effective parable of honor among thieves, and though it may not be as ideologically meaningful as the juicy noirs Dassin made for HollywoodThe Naked City (1947), Thieves’ Highway (1949), and Night and the City (1950)it’s probably more influential, above all for its half-hour sequence without dialogue that meticulously shows the whole process of an elaborate jewelry heist. With Jean Servais, Carl Mohner, and Robert Manuel. In French with subtitles. 118 min. (JR)

Rififi is a superb Criterion title that I've owned on DVD for several years. Jules Dassin directed several superb film noir titles (Brute Force, The Naked City) here in the U.S. before helming this French film noir heist film. Rififi keeps the cool edge of his earlier movies, but also benefits from a luxurious pace to convey the patience needed for the job at hand in the story. It's got one of the most meticulous heist scenes ever, and it would be a great double feature with Melville's Le Cercle Rouge.

Thanks so much, definitely will pick up and watch, on the criterion sheet says something about black humor which I think is perfect in a heist film, would you say the humor in it carries through the hole film? or is just some bits here and there.

I would like to see upgrades of those Dassin titles along with Siodmak's The Killers.
Like the new avatar-two of my favorite character actors: Ward Bond and Barton MacLane.

I'd say it has humor here and there. The terse moments of the movie are a lot more memorable. All in all, Rififi can best be described like its name, translated somewhat as "rough and tumble." There are some brutal off-camera moments that play out as more authentic, since they have a clumsiness about them more akin to real-life violence.

Thanks. I've been revisiting this Blu-ray, mostly in the background, as I work on the computer, and I decided to go searching for images. Those two really are perfect for the film.

(I intended to watch my Blu-ray of Eyes Without a Face tonight, but I'm sleepy after some long work days, so I decided to wait until I'm chilled out this weekend.)

"UPDATE: The director and several crewmembers escaped injury after they were assaulted by a man wielding an air-conditioning unit as a weapon."

WTF?
