I have not see those, but I have a gut feeling that Revanche is the best of them.

Actually, I would like to check out Certified Copy. That film has intrigued me for a long while now, but the premise is so evasive without delving into spoilers, so I have not yet pulled the trigger. Someday!

Certified Copy is another film that I liked, but enjoyed even more after reading about it then thinking about it after that. Still, dont think it would get many views unfortunately if I owned a copy.

Certified Copy is in my top 10 of the 21st century, so that's definitely my favorite of the bunch. Revanche is fantastic, though. I find myself pondering about that one every now and then. I hear the director's latest isn't nearly as good.

The Kid With a Bike deserves a mention as well.

You would like the film

I don't mean to sound rude, but I remember reading you state that you havent ventured that deeply into their newest releases. I've seen them all, but I wouldn't be so presumptuous as to point out the best one. There's at least a dozen tied for first place. Consider getting a HULU+ membership so you can check these out

Did the music rub you in the wrong way as it did me? That's the only thing keeping me from loving it.

I can't even remember the music, honestly. Maybe I was too emotionally involved to notice.

I watched L'Enfant this morning. Now I just have one more Dardennes to see: Lorna's Silence.

True that. I should have specified that Revanche is the best post-2000 Criterion film that I've seen. That would be a completely valid observation, even if it is the only post-2000 Criterion title that I've seen.

Worth a blind buy? The other films you mention are great, It's a shame Everlasting Moments seems to get little or no mention.

I loved Certified Copy It made me want to watch Last Year in Marienbad after it finished. Revanche is outstanding one of my favourite blind buys.

I genuinely can't remember the music, in fact I don't even recall there been any.

This reminds me that I need to see The Secret of the Grain. I'll probably do so after I see Blue is the Warmest Color.

There's an orchestral piece that is used a few times. I should find my original post, but struck me as extremely forced and manipulative. Other than that, I really did love it too.

I just watched my copy for the first time last night! It was one of the most difficult films I've ever watched, with plenty of non-linear editing and difficult to follow whatever story there was. There are some phenomenal shots in the film but I can't see myself watching this many more times. It was a tough one! But Marketa Lazarova is unique and there aren't many great films that are set in the 13th century!

I loved Certified Copy (and own it). It's funny because I nearly watched Revanche again last night but opted for Marketa Lazarova instead. Both are central european films in a way, but set in very different eras.

Oh, of the other films ABDrewes mentioned, I also loved Still Walking!

And while we're talking about post-2000 films, how about a shout out to Le Havre!? Such a nice film!

Hm. That must be the only Dardennes picture with a score. I can see why, I suppose, as it's definitely their most fantastic work.

Yup, 100000%. This is likely my favorite film in the collection in the last 10 years or so (though full disclosure, I have not seen most modern films in the collection) but definately preferred it to Revanche and Certified Copy though that is like comparing apples to oranges to bananas.

Considering Blue is the Warmest Color is coming out soon, I highly suggest you seek it out. The films Criterion has released about the hardships of the immigrant experience (El Norte comes to mind) are all first rate. Secret of the Grain is such a finely observed drama that even when it dances with melodrama, the effect is profound. The final thirty minutes or so left me speechless.

The piece was Adagio un poco mosso from Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 73 performed by Alfred Brendel and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It was either used two or three times.

It's a beautiful piece of music, but it really took away from the film's small-scale intimacy. I like Beethoven in my movies-- Barry Lyndon for example--but not in a neo(-neo?)-realist work by the Dardennes.

I LOVE the film, but I do agree with you on your critique. It is jarring and a bit heavy handed for sure. I am not sure I would overlook this technique in another film.
