Boogie Nights is my favorite movie of all time. It has everything I could want:

- Great characters played by a great ensemble of actors. Looking at that list of actors, it is really rather ridiculous the amount of talent in that film.
- Great soundtrack.
- Really great direction. This was PT coming off a great indie film and making a huge leap. Ok, his influences are there for all to see (Scorsese, Altman) but I find he takes those influences and make them his own.
- The film has great replay value and the characters do feel like old, deranged and \ or damaged friends.
- So, so many memorable scenes including:
[Show spoiler]

"introducing Dirk to the gang and meeting everyone for the first time"
"the recording of the rock album"
"the roller girl sidewalk stomp"
"the drug dealer scene - so intense."

List goes on and on.

FMF was one of my fav films from Wes Anderson, along with Life Aquatic. I regard it higher than some of the Wes A films that have got a Criterion release.

This has happened before, for example with some of the Universal movies (Traffic, Fear & Loathing...). Of course, given the fantastic presentation and nice supplements on the Fox release, if CC is redoing this they will have to come up with something truly special...for people other than the nerds looking for another spine number
I completely agree with you as well.

The current release has a lot of stuff. And the Universal releases for Traffic and Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas had pretty mediocre transfers and supplements.

Hopefully they'll release Moonrise Kingdom next as the Universal release is almost bare-bones in terms of bonus features.
Universal should have cut to the chase and partnered up with The Criterion Collection to release it under their label. I honestly don't see the typical Blu-ray consumer buying a title like that (unless it was on sale on Black Friday).

Exactly.

I honestly don't understand why some people get pissy when one small thing is changed in a film adaption. And when something is considerably changed (for good reason most of the time), they completely blow up as if it was the end of the world.

Just thought I'd add my two cents.
For me it's Being John Malkovich. I didn't like the indy hipster vibe for Where the Wild Things Are, even though I thought it was an interesting adaption.

I heard Her is a lot better though, so I can't wait to see it.

Yes!!!

Although ever since they announced the dual format stuff, a Blu-ray upgrade seems unlikely.

I've always had mixed feelings about Boogie Nights as a whole, but it's my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson film that I've seen to date, largely in part due to the dealer scene. Paul Thomas Anderson does a great job at generating explosive suspense and making the hair stand up on end, to the extent that I could practically feel the electricity in the air and the fear of the characters in that room. Alfred Molina should have won Best Supporting Actor just for that one brief scene.

This reminded me of a guy at one of my former jobs that got worked up about what all was changed in the first Lord Of The Rings movie.

(Just to put a damper on it, not too long after that he died at a rather young age (30 something?), just shy of the second movie coming out. Kinda freaky, never really thought about the two things together before, but it kind of fit with your paragraph. RIP Fred.)

I'm sorry to hear about your co-worker.

I was in total agreement with the changes made to The Lord of the Rings trilogy for the film adaptations. The ending of The Return of the King in the book never really reverberated with me, but I loved how the movie wrapped everything up. I was also glad that the characters did not break out into songs during the films.

There have been a handful of movies that have actually improved on the literary source material. The Shawshank Redemption is, perhaps, the finest example.

My hesitation to see Fantastic Mr. Fox so far is not due to the mere fact that changes were made to the source book, but more because of the fact that Wes Anderson happened to be at the helm. I'll be a good sport and check out the movie at some point, though.

Could somebody clarify this for me? If Criterion is ultimately owned by Image, why do Omage films rarely get placed in the Collection? I, personally, would love a Criterion release of Adaptation.

I'd rather see something by Anderson that Woody Allen any day.

He's a great filmmaker. Not like anyone else out there today, that's for sure.

The only Wes Anderson movie that I outright loved was The Life Aquatic. Moonrise was okay. Bottle Rocket wasn't for me... Still have to see the rest.

I think he meant Paul Thomas Anderson, not Wes Anderson.

And from a few pages back, hell yes there needs to be a Billy Wilder boxed set.

A lot of my friends love Wes Anderson movies, but I did not relate to the ones that I saw (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums). These movies had some charming aspects to them, but the characters were so far removed from my own scope that I could not delve in full-tilt. I actually feel more of a kinship with the samurai and peasants in the old Japanese movies more than I do with the Wes Anderson characters. Watching the Wes Anderson movies was like being at a party where I don't know anyone, but everyone else knows one another and they are all exchanging inside jokes.

Funnily enough, many Woody Allen movies get a similar reaction from me. I loved Annie Hall, Match Point, and Midnight in Paris, but those characters were not my people, if that makes any sense.

I'm too much of a "good old boy" to be fully invested in Wes Anderson or Woody Allen characters, although I relate to Woody Allen characters a lot more than I relate to Wes Anderson characters.

I haven't seen The Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou as I am waiting to see it on Blu-ray. I do own the official Academy screenplay though! I was tempted to buy the DVD at a used book place for like $5 I think. I'm pretty sure it was supposed to have a slipcover though.

My favourite is The Royal Tenenbaums, then Fantastic Mr. Fox and Bottle Rocket. I still have yet to see The Darjeeling Limited, even though I own it.

Moonrise Kingdom was probably my 2nd least favourite film of his, behind Rushmore.

For some strange reason, I agree with this statement. I think it's because most times, the characters are family (related).

Although with more viewings of Wes Anderson films, one kind of starts to feel like part of the pack.

I was bowled over by Fish Tank. An amazingly tense film with excellent central performances. Jarvis was very, very good for an unknown and Fassbender was, as usual, excellent.

The story draws you in immediately and keep ahold of you through to the end even if the screenplay is very calculated and the twist is pretty easy to figure out.

I choked up during the two final scenes.

I just finished my first Pasolini film, Accattone, and I can't give it any more than a 3/4.

I honestly was a bit disappointed with his directing style and writing. Several times in the film, the camera positioning felt a bit awkward. Not to mention, most of the shots in the film are close-up which got very old quickly. As far as the writing is concerned, that too felt a bit repetitive. I'm all for having a good dialogue driven film, but nothing made me feel connected to the characters or story.

Here's to hoping his other films are a lot more intriguing.

I have that! I still haven't seen it though. I will before the 28th though as I plan on seeing 12 Years a Slave then, and I'll want to watch the Michael Fassbender filmography I have in order. I still have yet to see McQueen's Hunger and Shame as well.

Well, it WAS his first film. I strongly recommend Mamma Roma, its the first I saw and is still my favorite of his.
Very good performance by Anna Mangani and a powerfully told story, both in the writing and the visuals.
