Just noticed that posting also... I am excited for those titles since I think most of them needed some 16:9 upgrading. I wonder if Image will be able to carry over the previous Criterion commentary on TIME BANDITS (they were able to on Blood for Dracula + Flesh for Frankenstein previously)

Those are some day one purchases if done right.

I just watched Time Bandits for the first time last night and loved it. I'll be looking forward to the Blu-ray now

I would buy all of those on Blu in a heartbeat.

Withnail and I is out in the UK (and it's region free). I've not bought it yet, wonder if this new one will be better...

Other than "Withnail and I", that's not too much of a surprise. "The Long Good Friday" and "Mona Lisa" were both rereleased in better DVD editions by Anchor Bay a few years back, and Time Bandits was released outside of Criterion on DVD as well.

Its too bad about "Withnail and I." The Criterion DVD I own isn't anamorphic though, so I'll definitely be picking up the Image blu-ray release.

Screengrabs of Stagecoach. It looks good, but don't expect anything like The Seventh Seal.

There will be no shipping between April 30-May 6 for any orders from Criterion direct due to warehouse work.

Image got the rights to the "Handmade" film catalog I believe recently, and that's why they are releasing all those.
I would have to think that basically those 4 are OOP now from Criterion.
The German release of "Time Bandits" looks phenomenal, and it would be great if the Image release is just the same.
it looks incredible for an early 80's film.
"Withnail and I" UK looks very filmlike also.
good to see Image releasing more blus.
I know a lot of people don't know a lot about them, and they do have a very mixed bag qualitywise of their dvds, but they have the rights to some great stuff.

if those are your favs, you probably shouldn't look into the rest, you probably won't like what you see...very different kind of films as opposed to the movies you mentioned.

Let me approach this from a different perspective. The movies you mention would mostly be considered "mainstream". If you want to really get the full benefit of what Criterion has to offer, get used to sub-titles. Really, after awhile you get so used to them, they won't bother you. At least that has been my experience. Don't be afraid to try something new. Before I stumbled onto this thread I had never heard of Jean-Luc Godard. Now he's one of my favorite directors. I would suggest you start with something like The Wages of Fear . Branch out, Revanche was another early favorite of mine. Want English speaking movies? How about Ride With the Devil or Bottle Rocket ? There are some great movies out there just waiting for you to discover. Have a blast!

Just finished watching Antichrist for the first time and man was is bad. One of the worst movies I've seen in quite some time. I'm very surprised this film is probably coming to Criterion. Did anyone else feel the same way I do?

Not I, said the still-born deer. I already own the UK Artificial Eye blu-ray release, and I'll gladly pick up Criterion's release, as well. My girlfriend cringed a bit the first time we watched it, but then again, she can be a "softy" sometimes.

I haven't seen the film yet but other I know have rented it thru netflix or their cue, and hated it.

However I like most of Lars' work. I remember being floored at the screening of Dancer in the Dark and how at the end you could hear a pin drop in the theatre and it was packed. No one could even breath, it was intense.

I loved DOGVILLE also, esp the ending.

So I Antichrist is not everyone's cup of tea but I think the directors work can turn a lot of people off.

It's also older, and was either lost or in a terrible condition. But I'm sure there will be some who want to know why this doesn't look like other older movies, regardless if they're from the same era.

I am with CCfixx on this one. i loved Antichrist and can't wait to own it. Not only was it challenging and a brave idea for a story, but I found it artistically and visually stunning. And that was just from netflix streaming. I can't wait to see how good it will look in blu.

one of the best movies ever (it doesn't matter that LvT is my #1 on the directors list)
