The Third Man, although I've got the Criterion DVD, so there's no real frantic rush. On an unrelated note, I just finished watching Sunset Boulevard for the first time. I am hugely impressed with this film, and it's too bad that Italy's recent post of the Billy Wilder announcements was just a joke. (It was a great joke, though!) |

1950 was a great year for films that comment on Hollywood. In a Lonely Place, All about Eve, Sunset Blvd, etcetera. Wow! ![]() JW, I think Turin Horse will hit you on a deep level based on what you said when we were discussing Andre Quote:

I will later on, but I want to sift through all of the extras first. I'll post it in the thread for Sunset Boulevard, since it's a non-Criterion, but I'll enjoy writing a few words.
If I can get over the typing finger fatigue from reviewing Eyes Without a Face, that is. |

Revisited The Royal Tenenbaums for the first time in probably a decade. I guess my tastes have evolved; on my initial viewing I didn't care for it at all however a few days ago I saw it online, used for $2, yes $2 so I figured why not. (DVD, not BD but I wasn't out any real $$ if I didn't care for it).
On the second go'round, I really loved it. So many complex and flawed characters. [Show spoiler] A great movie with a fitting ending. Last edited by smoss469; 10-20-2013 at 10:46 PM. |

It's been literally years since I have last seen or bought a Criterion. I'm looking to start up again. I looked through their catalogue and its overwhelming. I was hoping a few of you could help me out. I know it is hard to recommend movies to someone you don't know but I will pretty much watch anything and I have never come across a Criterion I didn't like. So with that could someone recommend a few of the most recent Criterions? Thank you in advance.

You can't go wrong with the Hitchcock or Lang offerings, each are good in their own regard. If you're into some weirdness, Branded to Kill is also very enjoyable; also the Wes Anderson releases are widely praised as well.
To sum it up: 39 Steps The Man Who Knew Too Much The Lady Vanishes M Ministry of Fear Branded to Kill The Royal Tenenbaums Rushmore The Darjeeling Limited Nothing too out there, and nothing I'd really consider art-house style, however if that's your thing, there are plenty of releases out there that'll suit your likes as well. |

Fixed my Blu Ray viewing issues so was able to get back to watching my Criterions from the Barnes & Noble sale from summer. Watched A Night to Remember and really enjoyed it. Sure around these parts there are folks who feel the same but liked it much, much better than Titanic. Better pacing and get right to the ship hitting the iceberg. Did get a kick out of seeing shots that Cameron clearly lifted for his movie.
