If you liked the cinematography in Sweet Smell of Success, then I enthusiastically recommend Melville's Two Men in Manhattan, which shares the same intense glow of New York City streetlights and signs and a similar overall aesthetic in terms of media portrayal. These two films would make a perfect double feature.

Tony Curtis also excels in The Defiant Ones, which I would love to see released as a Criterion title someday.

My Kino Blu-ray of Scarlet Street arrived a few days ago, so I'm looking forward to seeing the film in high definition for the first time. Woo hoo!
Cool! Thanks, Owl! Keep the recommendations coming.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on Scarlet Street after you give it a whirl in hi-def.

I renewed my Barnes & Noble membership today, so I'm ready for November. I'm almost out of Criterions on my wish list, but there are some new releases that I'll be adding. La Notte and City Lights are both great ones for next month.

The 30% off sale at Barnes & Noble is still going on, and I ended up with some unexpected extra cash, because my 100,000-mile service on my Tacoma ended up being roughly $150 less than I had planned for due to an online coupon that I found at the last minute. I decided to grab some non-Criterion titles...

Ultimate Gangsters Collection: Classics (Little Caesar / The Public Enemy / The Petrified Forest / White Heat)
The Caine Mutiny
The Conversation
Taxi Driver
(the "mastered in 4K one, since it was the same price and since I did not want to fool with the digibook edition)
Weird Science (bought this from Target, since it was on sale below my $10 price point)

I have all of the Region A Humphrey Bogart Blu-rays now, so I'd love to see Criterion release In a Lonely Place, perhaps.

I'm holding out for a Criterion upgrade, but I love the Brute Force DVD.

I also want Criterion to upgrade Jules Dassin's Night and the City. I got to thinking about this while watching another Gene Tierney movie, Laura, this week.

Night in the City is one of my all time favorite movies! I'm talking like top ten so I would be ecstatic if Criterion decided to upgraded that one. I think Jules Dassin was just top rate. I am also in love with Thieves Highway which is another I would love an upgrade of.

was just looking at my sister's copy of this collection in DVD... nice little set! I'm pretty sure (without checking) that the DVD box had 1 or 2 more movies. wonder why they didn't include all of them in the blu-ray box.

That crossed my mind. Especially because of the Scorsese commentary. I liked the simple choice, though.

Blow Out will be the next Criterion I watch... picked up a copy from the library on my lunch break. The Conversation is in my all time top 10 and I'm fond of Blow Up, too. If this film manages to stand on its own merits, then I could be in for a treat. Let's hope.

Hmm. I just returned Blow Out to the library. I wonder if we share the same library....

I first saw Blow Out on vhs in the early '80s. It was interesting revisiting after three decades. I'd be interested to hear your impressions.

hmm.. Arlington Heights Memorial Library, so probably not. it'd make the world seem awfully small if it is!

Yessiree. I've always wanted to see it, but somehow never got around to checking it out, although it looks right up my alley.

I divulged in the Top 20 of the 1970s poll in the other forum that I had never seen The Conversation, Taxi Driver, or Chinatown before, despite being intrigued by all three of them for decades now. I guess that we all have gaps in our cinema knowledge like that, where we've somehow missed out on ubiquitously acclaimed movies.
Now is just as good a time as any to take the leap of faith.

I look forward to hearing what you think about this film. Would it be asking too much to get one of your awesome reviews?

Sure thing! I'll probably write it up in the thread dedicated to the movie, and alert y'all to it when the time comes.
