I just picked up Eyes Without A Face at Barnes and Noble today!

It's one amazing and poetic piece of horror cinema that I haven't seen in years; I can't wait to revisit the film. The Cover-Art is awesome and the Criterion booklet is beautiful as always.

I'll probably watch it tomorrow, late at night with the lights off!

I can't buy Criterions at B&N this close to a sale. It would feel like I was throwing money out the window.

New batch of Netflix arrived today:

Rififi
Eyes Without A Face
Le Samourai

Won't have time to dive in until the weekend at the earliest, might even have to wait until next week but I have high hopes!

I know next to nothing about it, other than the fact that it's a thriller (supposedly a neo-noir?) I've only seen 35 shots, so.. we'll see. Will be watching tomorrow.

My daughter picked up Cronos and Eyes Without a Face for me for a Halloween gift. Now, getting her to ship it to me is a whole other issue. It's the thought that counts, right?
On the other discussions-Taxi Driver: Saw it back in the day; loved it right out of the gate. After the Reagan assassination attempt it got a lot of negative attention since John Hinckley saw himself as a Travis Bickle character in his Jodie Foster obsession. Amusing Scorsese performance and the final score from Bernard Herrmann.
Brazil: I saw this when it was first released on dvd by Criterion and thought it was ok, but nothing great. Watched it again recently and found it much more enjoyable. Maybe the passage of time? me changing? who knows. Seems like one of those films a second viewing might help.
Mafioso: Hard film to pin down-Black Comedy? Straight Comedy with a hard shift to Drama in the last third? I don't know. The opening credit score sets you up for a serious film and then it turns into a variation of Mr. Hulot's Vacation. The sudden shift later on is a bit jarring, to say the least. I liked it but it was a head-scratcher. Another film that improved for me on the second viewing.

I've kept myself in the dark about the plot details of the film. All I really know is it's a new Claire Denis film and she has floored me with her last two, so I'm definitely in.

When I watched Taxi Driver last night, I could not get over how young Jodi Foster's character was in the movie. I kept thinking to myself, "What kind of sick mofo would actually solicit her?" I guess that was the whole point of the casting choice, though.

I'm glad that you have Eyes Without a Face now. Every home should have a copy of that film.

Add Cronos to the list of Criterion titles that I still have not got around to seeing. Someday...

I'll never forget the day that this happened. I was nine years old, and heard on the news that President Reagan had been shot. My brother and I were terrified and worried for a while there.

Back on Criterion-related news...

I just read on the main page that Arrow is releasing Sullivan's Travels in the UK! Maybe this is a promising sign that this brilliant movie will be upgraded to Blu-ray by Criterion as well. I sure do hope so.

I was 30 and working in D.C. at the time and just remember the seemingly endless sirens as police and emergency vehicles went by our building. I also remember that there was much debate about playing the NCAA BB Championship game that night. Weird that I remember that as well.

It's one of the most important sets in the collection in regards to American independent filmmaking.
Cool thanks for the advice man! Woman under the influence was def a great movie, depressing but great. The box set is on my ever growing wish list. It keeps growing as the B&N sale gets closer. After the July sale I had my wish list down to 30 CC movies now its back to 50 again argh!

I was watching Kwaidan on TCM the other night. Has anyone heard about a CC upgrade on this? Checking out other sources it seems that the current DVD from Criterion has some framing issues (DVD Beaver review) as well as being some 20 minutes shorter than the MoC edition. Even on my SD feed I was impressed with the bright painted colors for the backdrops and, of course, the film itself was quite creepy.

Oh, god. I just came across the Fake Criterions blog even though it's been shut down since July. Some of the artwork is beautiful and a lot of the titles are hilarious!

Kwaidan would make a good Blu-ray, because it really does have a fascinating use of color. I have not seen this movie in ages, but it's spot-on.

Last night, I found a new favorite Martin Scorsese film (Taxi Driver). As of tonight, I now have a new favorite Francis Ford Coppola film. I grew up watching Apocalypse Now and The Godfather films, and I've seen them a million times, but my first viewing of The Conversation slayed me.
I've wanted to see this film for a long while, because I figured it as a precursor and influence to The Lives of Others, but this movie is something greater altogether. The music transition to eerie electronics over the course of the film is off the chain. I'll review this later on.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this brilliant documentary film?
I saw this docu a couple years ago, and it was, as you say, quite fascinating, although also VERY discomfiting, especially the relationship between Crumb and his brother. Based on my liking this I got some books of his illustrations, one of which is a surprisingly straight-ahead retelling of stories from the Book of Genesis.
I could not stand Zwigoff's movies like Bad Santa and Ghost World, which I thought were so much crap, but this one kept me interested throughout.
