I think of tonight's viewing as the first true viewing. It's a perfect film across the board, and I'm glad that the urge hit me to track it down.

Between this and my long-overdue first viewings of The Conversation and Taxi Driver this week, I've filled in some big gaps.

Tomorrow, I start watching Ultimate Gangsters Collection: Classics, and will enjoy long overdue first viewings of Little Caesar, The Public Enemy, The Petrified Forest, and White Heat. In November, I've got a long marathon session of film noir titles from Olive Films and Kino that will keep me busy for most of the month.

The November sale is going to be a huge splurge for for me... So many titles for me to catch up on. Had a lot of overtime for the current pay period.

Just finished Autumn Sonata. As expected, Bergman floors me once again. I thought that after 15 films, his works wouldn't still amaze me in the ways they do, but almost every one still surprises me.

I know a lot of people consider Cries and Whispers one of Bergman's most devastating films, but I actually found this to be more emotionally challenging. Liv Ullman's seemingly unending monologue near the middle of the film, coupled with the lengthy shots, is really incredible, both from Bergman's writing and Ullman's performance. I hope Criterion are able to put together as great a package for Persona as they have Autumn Sonata.

Okay, so, my love for Ridley Scott's latest has me pondering why he isn't in the Criterion Collection. Maybe good ol' CC can release 1492 as one of those spiffy $29.99 MSRP releases. I have t seen it yet, but the film sounds pretty incredible.

I think Criterionizing most of Ridley Scott's work would be pointless, because their discs are already so well-constructed already. And from what I've heard, 1492's main virtue is that it was better than Christopher Columbus: The Discovery.

It would be nice to have one Tony/Ridley Scott film in the collection, you know? The "MTV Brits" (Adrian Lynne is another big one) are definitely not well represented by Criterion.

Just one warning, if you are tempted to sell stuff that you haven't upgraded to bluray, make sure you really want to get rid of it. Nothing like having seller's remorse.

Yes indeed... well, good news on my end here. One of the members on this forum PM'ed me and I am selling him 3 Criterion DVDs for $10 each (3 for $30) and that includes shipping and handling. These are all DVDs that I've upgraded already to blu-ray! And baheidstu, don't you worry, all twenty of my DVDs I'm looking to sell have all been upgraded to BD. I will not sell any Criterion DVD in my collection that has yet to have a BD release. That is just the cardinal rule for me.

Kinda like saying Life of Pi had great cinematography when 90% of the shots were green screen replacements.
Does that make it CGI cinematography?
P.S. I was fully aware most of the movie was CGI

Even when it is rendered, there are still a lot of creative decisions to be made regarding camera movements, focus, depth of field and lighting, which is why Cuaron's regular collaborator DOP Emmanuel Lubezski was involved in the film.

Saw Lifeboat last night for the first time. What a great movie. Sad it's not included in any of the Hitchcock sets. Hey CC.... you paying attention?

^I liked that movie a good deal, though not enough to consider as a multiple-watch. I believe MoC has a strong region B release of the film.

Yeah. There's a nice Steelbook version, too.

1492 looks good, but Scott's entire central dramatic theme of the movie is based on one of the most boneheadedly enduring dopey-urban-myths ever busted about Columbus.
Hey, it was the big '92 anniversary, and we were just getting into marketing without realizing we didn't know the facts...It looks better than the Salkind movie but not it's not smarter by much.

(Uh, he DIDN'T get in trouble with the Spanish Inquisition...Nathaniel Hawthorne made that up.
Following thereupon, Columbus didn't see his exploration as "challenging the Church and daring to question European thought"--AAMOF, Spain had paid his bills rather hoping to get new Catholic converts.)

Is Woman Under the Influence getting upgraded to bluray?

I saw on criterion they recently posted a clip with Peter and Gina discussing making the film.

That would require shelling out more money for a region free/PAL conversion player. Don't know if I'd ever get enough use out of it to justify buying it.

Haha. I am definitely not expecting much in the way of historical accuracy from a a Ridley Scott film to be honest. I just want a good adventure movie. Is anything in 1492 as impressive as the shipwreck set piece in White Squall?

That's another area Criterion is deficient in: not enough adventure movies!
