Actually, they have been ported over as 'easter eggs.' Several Criterion Blurays have easter eggs on the disc. Off the top of my head, Tenenbaums has several and Repo Man has one (which is hilarious). To access or look for easter eggs, you have to click the 'blue' button on certain words (ie: SUPPLEMENTS, COMMENTARY, etc).

I can't wait to do a dual screening of For All Mankind and Gravity next year.

If it's released before the end of this month, then it is part of the sale.

(Occasionally there's a slip up with pre-orders, but it's pretty rare.)

MmI hear Contempt and, of course, Breathless mentioned quite a bit along with a few others at times.
I was wondering peoples thoughts on A woman is a woman. I just watched it a month or two ago and i really enjoyed it. It is pretty hard to not enjoy Karina though.

Also any info as far as a bluray release criterion or otherwise?

Boring question, does anyone know when this sale finishes? I'm sure I read Dec 5.

Not going for the Zatoichi this time around, going for the Casavettes set and the Rossalini/Bergman box. That'll do me for now.

Hi Criterion Fans,

I'm on the fence about buying ROSEMARY'S BABY since I've got the dvd. I really like the film. I've checked screenshots comparisons on dvdbeaver and they don't look much different to me.

Are the picture and audio quality, extras and booklet worth the upgrade?

Your opinions are much appreciated.

Definitely! I had the dvd too but the blu ray looks magnificent.
Still surprises me how good it looks when I pop it in my player. The extras are also quite interesting.
Well worth the upgrade to me.

Heaven's Gate

I watched it and I was impressed by some of the amazing visual shots in the film.

Wow.

I loved the first 2 acts of the movie moreso than the final act, I can say that.

I felt completely immersed in the movie at times.

I was blown away by the first major dance scene shot at Oxford, England, with the massive amount of extras dancing to the Blue Danube waltz. I had never seen so many top hats in one movie before. I had never seen a dance scene quite like that either. It was absolutely mesmerizing. I felt like I was transported back to 1870 when this took place. There was not an ounce of phoniness in this film too. Everything looked so realistic down to the small detail.

Kristofferson was a revelation in this movie. Walken was superb as was Bridges as well.

I didn't like Jeff Bridges' acting in the major battle scene towards the end because his character felt like a lemming with the other lemmings following him around in circles. I won't go into detail here without giving away spoilers. I just found that whole major battle sequence a bit brainless as they were moving targets for the bad guys. It definitely makes for a dramatic way of fighting though.

The story was easy to follow and I never felt I had lost track of the story or characters at all. There is nothing intellectual about Heaven's Gate, at least according to Michael Cimino. It's a visually striking film built on the nuances of characters. The props and authenticity of the costumes and carriages was fabulous. The production design was out of this world amazing.

It is so sad this film was torn to shreds by critics at the time and was a box office bomb. The ambition in this movie is on par with any Stanley Kubrick film and hearing The Blue Danube throughout the movie reminded me of 2001: A Space Odyssey. This film finally has gotten the respect and care it deserves with this Criterion blu-ray release edition and in my opinion is one of the finest releases in all of the Criterion Collection.

These are my rough thoughts on the movie. If you are looking for total immersion with spectacular scenery all combined into one great big morality play, this is a movie to own and cherish. It's 3 hours and 37 minutes of total immersion.

I found a copy of Playtime on amazon.ca for $49 inc. shipping. Is that a good price or will it get a re-release?

That April Fool's joke was kind of mean, because there's no way in hell I wouldn't buy a Criterion of Kindergarten Cop with all those trimmings.

What about spines ready for retirement? Ones that shouldn't be upgraded. I'll nominate Crazed Fruit.

Border Radio, no doubt about it. Upgrading it to Blu-Ray would only result in more people falling victim to it.

The sale runs from 11/5 through 12/2. Late Ray comes out in January. So you're SOL on that score.
