well played, my man.. may have been speculation, but its not like what you described would be unheard of.

btw.. I, too, have no idea what the Hyman Roth reference was about.. sounds like cool movie name dropping to me.

ahh, yes.. when David Gordon Green was a legitimate filmmaker. I have the GW Criterion DVD and the All The Real Girls DVD as well. It's been a while since I've revisited them, but I LOVED them when they first came out.

Self-control be darned.

I saw a perfect-condition digipak of 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman in Barnes & Noble, and decided to grab it while there was still one in the store.

I am looking forward to enjoying three nights in a row of awesome nonstop IngridBergmanness starting tonight.

I also went to Movie Stop after that to grab The Three Faces of Eve, and stumbled across a $10 used copy of the recently-released Fantastic Voyage. Score!

So, my total Criterion haul so far for the November sale comes to...

La Notte
Blow Out
3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman

Looking forward to adding City Lights and Tokyo Story to this during the final half of November.

Yes, what I wrote is basically so unfathomable, it is the equivalent of what people thought of the Titanic before its maiden voyage. People all thought its simply impossible for it to ever sink. When a person writes something so deplorable regarding something we all love and cherish (The Criterion Collection), our minds use a self-defense mechanism to just completely rule anything like that out (as in the inconceivable possibility of Criterion selling out and going bankrupt someday). I mean, it sounds so impossible as it is. Nobody could ever imagine that and nobody will. Those who do are possibly realists but at the same time can be seen as delusional and be mocked at.

All I can say is, if you don't take stuff like this seriously, then laughter is the best possible result.

Inconceivable.

I really wish this could be upgraded to blu-ray. Spike Lee needs to come to Criterion blu-ray and Hoop Dreams should be the upgraded title!

They would probably have to go back to the original elements, the video tapes, and reconstruct the film properly, instead of the horrid video to film transfer that is still out there. (Not Criterion's fault... It's the production company's fault.)

I remember the early reviews on Siskel & Ebert, and they were showing the video version of the film.

Hi, this is kind of CC related since the title is now OOP.

Just noticed that the arthouse selection of %50 off on B&N increased and now includes some studiocanal titles like Grand Illusion, That Obscure Object of Desire and Contempt.

The problem is i haven't seen Contempt but was wondering if it would be a good candidate for blind buy at $10.

The other Godard films i like are: Breathless, Band of Outsiders and Vivre sa Vie, but i totally hated Weekend and didn't care much for Pierrot le Fou.

Thanks.

I liked the movie but didn't love it. I don't see why I need to own this movie. I recommend to rent/borrow before you buy. But that is always a good strategy in general just in case a blind buy might not work out the way you intended (with the exception of some rare few masterpieces).

If you haven't seen Citizen Kane, you should make every effort to do so ASAP. It really is terrific and one of the greatest films of all time. I felt that way when I first saw it during a film school class and on through the DVD & Blu-ray Editions. Roger Ebert's audio commentary is also excellent, and I say this as someone who doesn't worship at his altar like some people do.

I own the Ultimate Collector's Edition but then again, I splurged because of how much I love the movie.

Can you tell me in detail if anything bad happens to the dog in the film? Feel free to use spoiler tags. Thanks!

Yes. It's by far Hallström's best work. It's not overly sentimental and manipulative like his later work. It is these things, however, so if you can't stand these traits, it's best if you stay clear.

I kind of love it. It's a coming-of-age tale (which I'm a sucker for) that does a lot of things just right, and if you want a good cry, this is the film for you.

EDIT: Regarding your question above, there is a brief mention about a dog being euthanized, but that's it. Nothing you can see. It ties more in with the loss around him and how he feels as a human being.

Yes, it would be an extraordinary task having to do all this, with all of the hundreds of hours of footage, but I could see Spike Lee willing to put in the time and effort to make this happen with Criterion (if he really cares about this film of his). I have yet to see the movie but I would love to see it in HD without the "video to film" transfer or an up-converted version.

I'm actually thinking about renting it on Blu-ray from Netflix while this B&N sale is still active but I need to know the dog's fate (not the one the film's title is referring to but the little boy's pet dog) before I decide.

[Show spoiler]Is the "dog being euthanized" the boy's pet dog that ran away? (I've read the plot synopsis.)

Could you also tell me how it compares to Fellini's Amarcord, if you've seen that movie?

[Show spoiler]He was under the impression that the dog was in a kennel.

Really, it's nothing major, and this is coming from someone that can't even stand the thought of dog cruelty. One of the few reasons I haven't watched Amores Perros.

I haven't seen that one yet. Been meaning to, though.

Okay, I'll give it a shot based on your input. Due to various tragedies I've endured, I'm very sensitive about seeing cruelty, violence or even lesser bad things happen to dogs and other animals. It's like, I've seen this happen in real life so why should I bother watching it happen in a film? I'll make exceptions sometimes (Cloud Atlas, off the top of my head) but there are always other films I'd rather see. I'm sure you understand.

And I didn't know dog cruelty occurred in Amores Perros! Guess I'll have to avoid that one.

As for Amarcord, I liked some parts of it (and one scene in particular was hysterically funny) but overall, I wasn't impressed.
