Haven't heard anything about an upgrade. The Human Condition is one of my top choices for a Criterion upgrade, even though I don't have the Criterion DVD release. I have the previous separate Image/Janus DVDs.

After watching Rossellini's Journey to Italy last night, I decided to expedite my viewing of this Antonioni film.

I just finished watching Scorsese's Raging Bull, and really got into seeing it on Blu-ray for the first time. I saw Raging Bull on VHS a couple of decades ago, and it stands as one of those films that I respect more than I actually enjoy watching, if that makes any sense. It's one of the darkest and most honest character studies in cinema, and, as such, it's a tough pill to swallow. I had a good feeling that my appreciation of the film would increase tenfold upon checking it out in its proper aspect ratio on Blu-ray, though, and I am happy to report that my gut feeling was validated. It's a great-looking disc that brings out the best in the awesome cinematography. It's still not the most fun flick in the world, though.

I think that is how most people feel about Raging Bull: it's blistering and brilliant but hard to stomach. I happen to love films that are depressing if that makes any sense, making Raging Bull one of my top 25 films of all time!

The specific title I'm hoping for is Z. I watched it on Hulu two weeks ago and was totally and utterly enchanted by it and absolutely need to have it sitting on my shelf as soon as possible (but if I can wait a few months and get it in pristine HD quality I'd certainly opt for that). I suppose I'd also like to see an upgrade for Missing which is another DVD I'm contemplating (though I've not seen it just yet).

I love both of those titles and would love an upgrade. I was going to buy Z during this sale but thought I'd hold off as I bought more DVDs then I intended too and wanted to stick to more blu-ray releases.

Just received one of my B&N orders (the Cassavetes box, Rossellini/Bergman box and the Oshima Outlaw Sixties Eclipse box), and placed another order using a newly purchased $75 gift card (to get the $10 GC to use later): Frances Ha, If...., Safety Last and The Spy Who Came In From The Cold.

To my understanding, the sex scenes in Blue Is The Warmest Color, while graphic, are still simulated. The scenes in In The Realm Of The Senses are frequent, graphic, and unsimulated. The latter will remain the most explicit film in their line.

Sort of Criterion related, was watching some seasons of Sealab 2021 (Gohastings deal of the day, $2.99 a season) and they started talking about Godard and Breathless. Talk about unexpected!

I disagree completely, I think Antichrist is far more graphic. In the Realm of the Senses and Sweet Movie also come to mind (haven't seen Salo). Then there's Window Water Baby Moving as well.

How can you disagree completely if you haven't seen Salò?

Adam Reed's shows (Sealab 2021, Frisky Dingo, Archer) are such a wonderful mix of high and low culture. I can't think of any right off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's other Criterion films mentioned in his work.

So, my campus' film society screened Koyaanisqatsi the other night, which I was nervous about. They made fun of the first half-hour, but started paying attention by the time humans began to show up, and seemed spellbound by "The Grid" (and, really, who isn't?). People seemed to like it.

just saw this in a german bluray forum

Red Beard (akahige) by akira kurosawa will get a bluray release november 30th

Audio: japanese
Subs: German
Filmessay by Walter Ruggle

but it does mention "restored edition" and the same label does release tokyo story , seven samurai , rashomon

since there is a upcoming criterion release of throne of blood, maybe we will get red beard next?

Archer is full of great references. Some very obscure but others are pretty easy to spot.

I just finished watching "The Most Dangerous Game" via the recording I had from TCM. I found it to be one of the most entertaining films that I've seen from the pre-1940s and I would not turn down an upgrade should Criterion decide for it. The film is vastly superior, in my opinion, to the other 1932 island-set Criterion film, Island of Lost Souls. Definitely check it out if you guys can!

Fanny and Alexander showcases Bergman's trademark style of cinema that illuminates the big questions and fundamental frailties of human life while still requiring us to leave our sense of realism at the door
after reading that in the great owl's review im defintly gonna add fanny and alexander to my next B&N order.

really loved the seventh seal , the magician was kinda odd (had to watch the bonus features to really get what its about) , but still i liked it. i still have to watch my other bergman blurays , but he kinda seems to a be really great for blind buys...

autmn sonata , fanny and alexander ,summer with monika and smiles of a summer night are the bergman movies that im still missing..

not sure if i should get them all at once with the zatoichi box and leave the other stuff for the next sale..

damn criterion, so much stuff to choose from. i really wanted to get paris texas this sale after all the praise the movie got the last few days in this thread...

My top 25 list is going to need some updating. Paris, Texas is a simply astonishing film, one with human emotions and feelings that lead these wonderful characters to an emotionally shattering climax. Everything about this film is absolutely perfect and it is now my favorite film ever committed to celluloid.

I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone and everyone to see it!
I couldn't agree more.

Does anyone think it would work with that combination or maybe the CSRs at B&N won't allow the use of more than one coupon on a single item?

The way I see it:

$124.99 = MSRP
$62.49 = 50% OFF
$50.00 = 20% COUPON
$45.00 = $5 OFF $50 COUPON
$40.50 = 10% MEMBER DISCOUNT

I don't think it would work since the price is already below $50 when you try the $5 off $50 coupon. But wouldn't it be awesome getting this box set for around $40 + tax?
Well, JW, in my experience, they're pretty strict about the $5 of $50, meaning you need...$50 after all other discounts. Plus, the discounts work this way:

$124.99 = MSRP
$62.49 = 50% OFF
$56.24 = AFTER 10% MEMBER DISCOUNT
$45.00 = AFTER 20% COUPON

$5 OFF $50 COUPON applied at this point if you have $50 or more in purchases. And that's provided they don't follow coupon restrictions to the letter (no other coupons can be used in conjunction unless from the welcome packet).

That being said, it never hurts to dump the coupons on the counter and see what happens. After all, stevenelliott got it to work in Texas.
