Can't wait to pick up City Lights!

Watched The Life of Oharu last night. The way each event in her life gets worse and worse got to the point where it was almost comedic. Still was a very good film worth seeing.

I still think that The Kid is the best Chaplin film. It hits all the right notes, and does such a great job of blending comedy with drama.

Doood. The tightrope scene in The Circus. No other scene from any of his other films made me laugh as hard as that one did.
But for me nothing can top City Lights (The Gold Rush might rival it though). I thought it was the most emotionally satisfying, even though Modern Times is also really great.

I absolutely love that scene. Great point.

I have to say that Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is our yearly Thanksgiving tradition. I do agree with The Ice Storm as well.

Agreed. I was really excited for a while at the possibility that the tight rope walker in the last New Year's clue could be for The Circus.

The chicken hallucination in The Gold Rush is pretty funny. I'm a twisted sort, so I also laughed heartily at the boat scene in Monsieur Verdoux.

I do not have the constant belly laughs during the Charlie Chaplin films that I have while watching Harold Lloyd's Safety Last!, but the Chaplin films have an uncanny charm to them that cannot be denied.

City Lights will be a blind buy for me, but I have a good feeling about it based on what I gather through general osmosis going into the film.

I'll probably wait until 2014 to treat myself to the big Buster Keaton box set on Kino Blu-ray, because I want to concentrate on buying the rest of the 1940s/1950s film noir titles from Olive Films and Kino during the rest of this year. I am looking forward to those Keaton movies, though.

Sometimes I think a person is either a Chaplin type or a Lloyd type. Me, I am a Chaplin. Of course, I am also a huge Keaton fan, so I might night to rethink that dichotomy.

I have been buying the Keaton releases here and there. Otherwise, I would definitely be asking for that giant set as a Birthday or Christmas present...

Life of Oharu is probably one of the most depressing films that I own. I'm not sure I could watch it again, but I did enjoy it (if that is the right word).

Just ordered the following 7 titles from the B&N sale. I checked the cheapest available prices everywhere else including e-bay and even with the $22 that B&N are charging to send to the UK plus a similar amount likely customs charge that I will incur at this end, this turns out to be a good value. I compared the cheapest prices for the same BDs everywhere including e-bay.

Wings of Desire
The Game
La Notte
People on Sunday
Safety Last!
Insignificance
Thin Red Line

Particularly waiting for People on Sunday. I have a special interest in what life was like in Weimar Germany in the 20s and 30s following the financial crisis of 1923 and before you-know-who took over.

what do you suppose would be a good price for Army of Shadows and Leon Morin? these two, of course, along with Le Cercle Rouge are OOP. AOS and LM are still somewhat reasonably priced.... I'm wondering if anyone has an idea as to what would be a good price for the two.

I like to think that I'm fairly Lloyd-tolerant all around,

although I lean more toward Keaton.
And yes, the tightrope scene in The Circus is funnier than most of what we get in City Lights, except for the statue and boxing scenes.

The last few minutes are pretty wild though...the acting is quite good. The only thing I didn't understand was some of the editing style, especially with some of the erotic "montage" sequences. I feel that Roeg tends to use this similar type of erotica in his films and it definitely is an "auteur" thing with him. The electronic music by Hans Zimmer totally reminded me of Rain Man with the Japanese/East Asian undertones (which worked in this film actually).

It was worth the blind buy purchase for me.
That is good to hear.

I am a fan of Roeg's style so those kinetic uses/techniques of cinematography and editing are right up my alley even in a film such as this which takes place inside.
