This can't be true. Like shadedpain4, I have used coupons online on sale items without issue, for some great deals. They worked last week on the Studio Canal art house titles that are 50% off.

The coupon says "any other promotion." God knows what that means. The fact is, if Barnes wants to lock out coupon use on a particular item (e.g., Criterion titles) they just do it.

In store, they did let me use a 20% snail mail coupon for La Notte. I was able to use another for That Obscure Object of Desire, which was ordered online and already on sale for 50% off.

But this morning's e-mail coupon proved useless online.

I think coupons cannot be used online if there is "Note: This item does not qualify for coupons or promotional discounts unless expressly stated" disclaimer on a product page. But since it was not there on the first day of the sale, I was able to use a coupon on Criterion.

None of the coupons have worked for me, they worked for me in July though.

They might, unless the store manager is lenient. It truly is YMMV in this kind of situation.

Default B&N coupons???

What coupons do you guys keep getting to work at the b&n store? In July I tried a few at three different stores in the July sale and had zero luck. Each time the cashier would say well your getting a 60% off can't give you any more discounts... Just got a email today for, "15% off any item" would that work towards the CC sale? I haven't even bothered with coupons this go around. Any info/tips?

So I watched Hunger last night and it blew me away again. I saw it for the very first time at the IFC Center right around near New York City's W. 4th Street back in 2008 when it was released and I remember going to a late night showing of it around midnight with a gourmet cupcake I had purchased just around the corner (well, actually it was from Magnolia bakery - you know, that world famous cupcake place featured in an episode of Sex and the City). Ironic that I'm eating like a glutton with a decadent cupcake in my hand while the film is about a man who goes on a deadly hunger strike. Well, I ate that cupcake (or two) in about 5 minutes before all the shit-smearing prison cell walls came into focus (so I didn't lose my appetite).

Last night I watched this film again and it made me realize just how brilliant Steve McQueen as a director is. That 17 minute shot of two men sitting at a table is just incredible. The best part is, it comes right in the middle of the film, where most of the time the weakest material is in the very middle of a film. Yet, this was the strongest scene and its right in the middle. It's a 4 star film.

I popped Three Outlaw Samurai in last night and I think it might be the perfect $29.99 title. It didn't really strike me (at first blush anyway) as an 'important classic' or one of the 'greatest films from around the world' or whatever they say in their various mission statements but it was pretty damn good and it looked freaking fantastic.

I definitely missed having extras but I'm glad they went the barebones BD route instead of maybe trying to fit it into an Eclipse set.

Very glad I finally picked it up.

Well, I am able to use the 15 or 20% coupons most of the time at the store in addition to the $5 off $50 or more coupon (which I only use when buying in 3's). It's too bad you have a strict CSR at your store. You have every right to use additional discounts on top of the 50% sale. That B&N employee who turned you down should be disciplined for 1) misleading you and 2) turning away a potential customer.

Default Spartacus

I've not been paying close attention, but wasn't Spartacus on the rumored release list for 2012 or 2013?

Yeah, I think that rumor gained steam in 2012. Criterion posted a photo of an actual physical desktop with a tentative schedule or to do list or somesuch thing and people went goofy blowing it up and manipulating the contrast in an attempt to decipher some of the titles.

A lot of people think Spartacus was on that list. It's not entirely clear what the list was or whether Spartacus was actually on it but that's where most of the buzz over Spartacus came from.

(that's all off the top of my head, I might be a little fuzzy on the details)

One part I'm pretty clear about though...there's been no word since.

The way it's going to work is that any title new to the Collection will be dual format. Any upgrades will be dual format or not depending on how large their stock on hand of the DVD is. They probably have a fair number of DVDs of the Grey Gardens set left to sell.

I really hope Y Tu Mamá También is announced for tomorrow. I'm close to doing a somewhat large buy on Amazon Canada and that is one of the titles.

Luckily me putting off watching Detachment, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise, and Gosford Park, has bought me some time.

If I have one of the "x% off any one item" coupons during a sale (whether the current Criterion sale, or any similar promotion), I hand it to the cashier, and he scans it in, and I get my additional discount. No muss, no fuss. I've never had a coupon refused at either of the local (southern New Hampshire) B&Ns.

Since I tend to see a couple of familiar faces behind the counter at the closer of the two stores whenever I go in there, and they've been around for a while, I can only assume that they've not gotten in trouble for accepting the coupon.

If worse comes to worst, and they won't accept the coupon for a Criterion title during the sale, use it for something else you want.

I was actually just about to post that I bet we will see this soon. Now that Gravity is out, there shouldn't be anything preventing Criterion from finally releasing it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that new titles won't be announced tomorrow considering it's a Friday. It seems like if the 15h falls on a Friday or a weekend, they move it to Monday.

But if it does happen, more Cronenberg please.

Yeah, I haven't had any luck with online coupons. I'm waiting for the end of year Amazon sale. Free shipping and no sales tax.
