You have to be somewhat of a charmer. Here's what you do:

1. After arriving at a Barnes and Noble store, scout out the person behind the register. Hopefully, the employee is a member of the opposite sex. (You may consider bringing your most attractive opposite sex friend with you just in case)

2. Start a general conversation with the employee about movies. Try to communicate a sense of naiveté when it comes to the current sale.

3. Start a specific conversation about your current state of lack of funds regarding Christmas shopping, and that you have printed up multiple copies of a current coupon with the hopes of "not breaking the bank."

Hopefully, the employee will say something that "opens a crack." Using improvisational skills, try to innocently offer up a possible sales purchase opportunity.

Default B&N Membership HELP!!!

Hey,
I don't have a BN membership, but I would be interested in one. However, I live in Europe, so I could use it only via online ordering and international delivery. What are the benefits for me then?

Can I sign up for 25 USD, and after that order some Criterions in the current sale, and 50USD will be deducted from the price I have to pay?

Thanks

No, there's no point in you becoming a member. The 10% member discount is instore only and the various member coupons they send out are of generally limited use online. With regard to these Criterion sales coupons are of no use online.

But you don't need to be a member to get the 50% at B&N during these sales. Their current online prices reflect the discount (with a few quirky exceptions in their inventory system) and anybody can buy Criterions at those prices.

Thanks!

I know, I'm a returning customer in their 50% Criterion sales

But I read that new membership comes with a 50 USD coupon which you can use on your purchase, so I thought maybe I could use it for some more Criterion titles...

Dedicated B&N Sale thread

That thread can be an awfully hard read but the first post has some pretty good information about the various coupons floating around and their limits.

From your perspective, the most important limitation is that one cannot use coupons of any kind when purchasing Criterions online during this sale.

But check that thread, you might be able to find a nugget or two of useful info in with all the wishlists and haul posts

Anyone ever buy posters from them? What's the quality like?
Agreed. I've ordered BFI's edition of Journey to Italy, because it's the only one of the three I want to see on Blu-ray. I can see people buying the set because they're interested in the collaboration between Rossellini and Bergman, however. I suppose there may be some extras in the set that cover the sordid (in the early 1950s) details.

edit: Another reason to buy the set is to see the two others, if there is no other way to see them. In his "My Journey to Italy," Martin Scorsese talks about all three of the films.

These days, I do not bother asking anymore. I'm fortunate in the first place to be getting a great deal with the 50% off plus standard membership discount, and the last thing in the world that I want to do is put a clerk on the spot about doing something that might be against store policy. It's usually only three or four dollars difference anyway.

I have no qualms, however, about attempting to utilize the coupons in conjunction with 50% off sale if I am placing an online B&N order. If the store website says that it's a go, then it's a go.
Actually, the first cashier wanted to reject the coupon (which I pulled up on my phone, no less). I told her this was unacceptable, that the 15% coupon was totally valid based on the fine print. She called over another cashier and he was able to override the glitch after a brief call with his manager.

It's valid, don't let anyone bully you. I saved over $5 on The Rossellini set and the brief inconvenience (five minutes or so) was soon forgotten. FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS, PEOPLE!

Yup. We are definitely in a forum comprised of cinephiles and home video nuts

I started Le Cercle Rouge last night and it's very good so far. I'm such a sleepy head that I had to get to bed so I will finish the second half tonight. As of right now, I prefer Army of Shadows but won't deny the goodness of LCR.

I'm hitting BN today after work so hopefully I will be watching City Lights (one of my favorite films and my favorite Chaplin) or Frances Ha this weekend.

For me its

- The Tenant
- Le Samourai
- Any film from David Lynch
- Any film from David Cronenberg
- The Passanger
- Any film from Nicolas Winding Refn.

I really do hope Le Samourai finally gets a BD release from Criterion, many fans will be very happy.

Same here, wife and I took the day off to hit the theater. Unfortunately she wants to see Thor and I'll most likely need to see 12 Days some other time.

Gotcha. I try to avoid this thread whenever sales are going on, but I figured someone would help me out.

Thanks.

I don't want to jinx myself, but my local B&N has 2 or 3 very kind employees in the DVD section. One very nice elderly lady who encourages use of all my coupons... manually enters them all in so that they do work, and asks if i checked my email for more.

Anda few otehrs that manually enter as well, though one guy called the manager to see if he could, and i lucked out.

So again... i think i'm lukcy!

They havent said they are or are not announcing today
The fact that they havent said anything could be taken as they will ...of course they can post something mid-day and say "check back Monday" and still worse "A hint for Monday - Ross Hagen films !" ahhhhhhhh !!
