Definitely, any of his films being released would make my year. I've only seen Yi Yi and The Terrorizers so far because I refuse to watch his other films in the poor quality that they're in, for me those two films alone represent a pinnacle of filmmaking. I can't believe A Brighter Summer Day could reach 84th in the Sight & Sound critic poll and still not have a single DVD release anywhere.

And if that's true for NotH, why not for The Leopard, or any other digipack that has 2 discs and a thin booklet? They are also going to be producing more and more digipacks for their releases on any movie with 3 or more discs (dual format like Tokyo Story) unless they have another option for normal sized booklets and a plastic case that can hold 3 discs. (perhaps with Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion & Nashville) |

still hoping for Y Tu Mama Tambien
it has been over a year since a new Hitchcock release, so Foreign Correspondent would be great considering all the love for it, Le Samourai would seem to be essential I've heard nothing of the sort, but there is no Almodóvar in the CC and there is no U.S. blu-ray release for Talk to Her, one of my favorite films of this century |

hey Gate! see my post from yesterday regarding Le Samourai. Yes, it is very hyped. I didn't quite get what I was expecting with it.. still digesting it so I'm not sure if that is necessarily a bad thing. I have liked other Melville films better, though, for sure.

you could already be aware of this, too... just putting it out there because I think you mentioned that you enjoyed Kurosawa and some of the samurai films. Naming this movie "Le Samourai" seems to make about as much sense as Tommy Wiseau calling his movie, "The Room."

For some reason The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance popped into my head while I was making coffee a few minutes ago.
Paramount doesn't throw a lot Criterion's way and their distribution deal with Warner has been very productive so a direct release probably isn't that far down the line anyway but still...that could be a pretty cool addition. |

And I'm actually not a huge fan of samurai cinema although there are some films in the genre for me that "break the mold" or offer something so different that I enjoy them quite a bit (e.g., Criterion's releases of Gate of Hell and Kuroneko). And since the only Kurosawa movies I've seen have all been samurai flicks... ![]() I should mention that I like westerns even less and often you can see the samurai films influencing that genre & vice versa. |

I had to see it because of the enthusiasm that so many people here have for it. I liked it but I don't share that enthusiasm... yet. That being said, because it's a film with so much expectation my mind was busy watching the movie AND digesting what it is that people like about it so much. I suspect that I will enjoy it more after further viewings. I'll know what to expect, I won't have to worry so much about reading the subs and following the plot and I'll be able to drink it all in. |

Good list. Back in July someone posted a video of Peter Becker on the Crit-forum where he confirmed that La vérité, Sundays and Cybele, and Citizen above Suspicion were all coming out. We will have Citizen next month, so the list would appear to be good.
