At this point I've given up hope that Criterion will release any of the few movies I'll immediately be excited about and want to buy. That leaves discovering films I've never heard of before, which happens every now and then with them.
Is there a bittersweet emoticon? |

I think the plan is to re-issue existing titles when current stock runs out. I'm assuming The 400 Blows will get the same treatment sometime this spring.

I'm ecstatic about Blue is the Warmest Color but if there's a special edition coming it just means more waiting. Bummer. At least they have it. I'm interested in what they have in store for extras/packaging. Must be substantial.

I have to say, I don't recall Criterion ever doing this as a marketing strategy...seems like they want to capitalize on some extra $$$ in time for the Academy Awards in case this film wins big.
Maybe Criterion can just ask consumers to send in their copies of Blue is the Warmest Color and then they'll receive the more "permanent" edition. But I don't know if I ever recall seeing them release multiple editions with different extras... then again, they might not and this may be the only edition we see. ![]() |

Technically they do release multiple editions, as they tend to include more extras when they upgrade DVDs to Blu-rays. ![]() |

I really don't think their strategy is to wait for the Academy Awards. This film isn't even eligible for the Best Foreign Film category, and it will need a hell of a lot of luck to garner any other nominations. This isn't exactly the Academy's cup of tea.

What's the temptation? There's nothing new on the release.

I have Breathless on blu already, so need need to double-dip there. Not sure that I will for Fantastic Mr. Fox, either...the previous release was already, err, fantastic!
However, I will happily upgrade my DVDs of Tess, Jules and Jim, and Foreign Correspondent! Also, looking forward to finally adding King of the Hill to my collection! Watched it 12 or so years ago in a film appreciation class and then never found it available on DVD. Very nice! My most hopeful upgrade for the near future would be Bergman's Virgin Spring. The other three titles in my Bergman Masterworks box set have all been upgraded and then I could trade that off. --Ben |
