At this point I've given up hope that Criterion will release any of the few movies I'll immediately be excited about and want to buy. That leaves discovering films I've never heard of before, which happens every now and then with them.

Is there a bittersweet emoticon?

I think the plan is to re-issue existing titles when current stock runs out. I'm assuming The 400 Blows will get the same treatment sometime this spring.

I'm ecstatic about Blue is the Warmest Color but if there's a special edition coming it just means more waiting. Bummer. At least they have it. I'm interested in what they have in store for extras/packaging. Must be substantial.

I have to say, I don't recall Criterion ever doing this as a marketing strategy...seems like they want to capitalize on some extra $$$ in time for the Academy Awards in case this film wins big.

Maybe Criterion can just ask consumers to send in their copies of Blue is the Warmest Color and then they'll receive the more "permanent" edition. But I don't know if I ever recall seeing them release multiple editions with different extras... then again, they might not and this may be the only edition we see.

I wonder if that other edition of Blue is the Warmest Color is that supposed 3 hour and 40 minute cut the director was talking about a while back.

Are they reprinting Pauline Kael's review for the release? (Goes to check)

Seems all febreary Dual format releases will be packed with extras, since they are all 3 discs.

Bring on the digipacks

Yeah, only hardcore fans of Blue is the Warmest Color will probably pick up the initial release... most everyone else will wait for the double-dip. Even with the possible Oscar noms, this is kind of a bad strategy.

The director's cut (rumored to have 30+ minutes of footage) will be the more "platinum" edition of this film.

Technically they do release multiple editions, as they tend to include more extras when they upgrade DVDs to Blu-rays.

I really don't think their strategy is to wait for the Academy Awards. This film isn't even eligible for the Best Foreign Film category, and it will need a hell of a lot of luck to garner any other nominations. This isn't exactly the Academy's cup of tea.

Yeah but that's not the same thing in this case.

Boo. They are not:

PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic John Powers, a 1981 piece by Truffaut on Roché, and script notes by Truffaut

I don't think I've ever been so excited over a month's lineup. This is hands down the best thing ever.

What's the temptation? There's nothing new on the release.

Didn't you say this back on September 15? I wish they would quit with the teasing and put out the most desired titles too, but this is still a good month. You can't be expected to like everything a distributor puts out. I'm not happy about the constant disappointment in regards to those wanted titles, but they're still putting out good films and I have faith they will come eventually, hopefully by the end of the year.

I have Breathless on blu already, so need need to double-dip there. Not sure that I will for Fantastic Mr. Fox, either...the previous release was already, err, fantastic!

However, I will happily upgrade my DVDs of Tess, Jules and Jim, and Foreign Correspondent! Also, looking forward to finally adding King of the Hill to my collection! Watched it 12 or so years ago in a film appreciation class and then never found it available on DVD. Very nice!

My most hopeful upgrade for the near future would be Bergman's Virgin Spring. The other three titles in my Bergman Masterworks box set have all been upgraded and then I could trade that off.

So. Does anyone think that 2014 will hold some Terry Gilliam titles?

I might venture guesses towards The Fisher King, Baron Munchausen, and/or Dr. Parnassus.
